To all my American friends – a warmly felt Happy Thanksgiving!….God Bless America!us uk flag.jpg

Shouldn’t have said that…!

By ATWadmin On November 22nd, 2006 at 7:51 pm

The other week, I went and bought the DVD box-set of the acclaimed 1996-97 BBC drama series “This Life”, which looks at the lives of a group of newly-qualified lawyers, as they rent a house together in Southwark, and work together in the Grey’s Inn Road area of London. I loved the series when it was first shown, and I enjoyed watching it again.

One of the more memorable moments of the first series was when the character “Miles” (Jack Davenport) took offence at something that his friend “Warren” (Jason Hughes) said to him, and lashed out at him. The character “Warren” was a gay man, and Miles responded to Warren’s remark by sounding off: “What would you know about it, poncing about on Hampstead Heath like a Vaseline-arsed fairy?” Warren was deeply hurt that someone he had thought of as a good friend could use such words about him. Eventually, Miles saw the hurt he had done, and sat down with Warren and apologised sincerely, saying, “Look, I was angry with you and I wanted to lash out and hurt you back, and so I chose the area of your life that I thought you would be most vulnerable about. If you had had great big ears, I would have called you Jumbo, or something”. A bottle of wine changed hands, and friendships were restored.

It’s the type of thing that I think most of us are either guilty of at one time or another (I know I have been!) or else on the receiving end of, from time to time. When it happens in private, it can usually be patched up in private. But if you’re an A-list celebrity and you “lose it” in public and sound off on a tirade, then it can take an awful lot of apologising and eating humble pie, if you want to restore the public’s trust in you, otherwise you might find that your future career is in jeopardy! I’m sure Mel Gibson knows this only too well, now.

…and, looking at a story that has been circulating in the news over in America this last week, I think that Sienfeld star Michael Richards may also be about to learn this hard lesson.

Richards was performing as a stand-up comedian in a Los Angeles nightclub several nights ago. Apparently he came under some form of provocation from several members of the audience, although this may have been nothing more than the sort of high-spirited heckling that a professional comedian ought to simply take on the chin. We will probably never know for sure, because the guy with the Camcorder only hit the ‘record’ button just as Richards launched into his “response” to the heckling…. And what a dreadful response. (YOUTUBE LINK) – Warning – contains….well, where do I start?….swearing, and language that many may find abusive.

For further context, HERE’S a link to a CNN news report on the incident, including the reaction of a member of the audience.

And finally, HERE’S Richards apologising on the Letterman Show, 48 hours later.

I guess that people’s reactions to this will all be different. Some would say “OK, he lost his cool, and he has apologised for it; let’s draw a line under it”, others will argue that his remarks went way beyond what is acceptable, and that no amount of apologising can undo the offence he has caused. I do think that a professional stand-up comedian ought to be able to deal with hecklers by turning the situation to his/her advantage in a light-hearted way, rather than by abusing the audience. Regardless of the content of what was said, Mr Richards’ reaction demonstrated a lack of stagecraft and discipline.

When I wrote this post yesterday, I expressed some further points. But my internet connection failed just as I was about to post it, and I lost everything and have had to retype it all out again. This time, I’ll leave it at that, and simply ask the reader: What do you think? Has Mr Richards sufficiently apologised for his offensive outburst? Will (and should) his future career suffer as a result? Are there any circumstances under which the use of the “n” – word can be acceptable?

I thought this was a great story, care of the always excellent Moonbattery….

tango-makes-three.jpg"Two male penguins at New York City’s Central Park zoo adopt a fertilized egg and raise their chick as their own, proving to the satisfaction of moonbats everywhere that there is nothing unnatural about homosexuality or even the bizarre and atrocious phenomenon of gay marriage. The story inspired a book entitled "And Tango Makes Three," which to the fury of Shiloh, Illinois parents, is being made available to children despite its perverted undertones.

For now the book will not even be moved to the adult section, because school district Superintendent Jennifer Filyaw finds it "adorable" and age-appropriate for its target audience of 4–8-year-old children. The male penguins are described in the book as being in love.

BUT…..gasp horror – reality has gotten in the way of this gay-love tale…

"A sequel waits to written, because the famous "gay" couple has split up. When a female penguin was introduced, one of the males devoted his attentions to her instead of his erstwhile same-sex partner."

Who’d have thought that this would happen? Males preferring females! Whatever next…?

795151-549211-thumbnail.jpgI’m pleased to read that former New York Mayor, Rudy Guiliani, has given an indication that he may stand for the ’08 Presidential election.

The former mayor filed papers to create the Rudy Giuliani Presidential Exploratory Committee, Inc., establishing a New York-based panel that would allow him to raise money to explore a White House run and travel the country. The four-page filing, obtained by The Associated Press, lists the purpose of the non-profit corporation "to conduct federal ‘testing the waters’ activity under the Federal Election Campaign Act for Rudy Giuliani."

Yes, I know Rudy is liberal on some social issues but I also know he is a LEADER – and that he stands for principled leadership. He also has the instinctive common touch. Most impressive of all, on 9/11 when the Towers fell, he showed fortitude, vision and commitment. I think he will give the Pelosicrats and their San Franciscan value system a real run for their money and I wish him well.

The GOP needs new energy and it will be vital to remove the dull unispired halfwits that appointed the likes of Mel Martinez to the position of RNC chairman. As I wrote the other day, it’s time for a change and Rudy would be a change for the better. Yes?

We may have our own little immigration scandals, and some not so little; and sometimes the sordid results of such scandals come to light, but as the saying goes, ‘America always does it better!’

An Arlington, Virginia, District Circuit Court clerk grew suspicious when American citizens arrived, together with their future Ghanaian spouses  while arranging for marriages; when they seemed to be almost perfect strangers! They then returned shortly afterwards, to file for divorce, and the same mistakes kept cropping up in their paperwork!

He alerted police, and after a four-year long investigation, they closed the gate on one of the largest immimigration scams ever uncovered in Washington D.C., logging up an estimated 1,000 fake marriages!

Seems an early, legal arrival from Ghana (someone please tell me why it’s always Ghana, or Nigeria?) who had a real good job paying $112,00.00, got a little greedy and hatched the idea of persuading, with a cash bribe, American citizens to go through the civil marriage system with perfect strangers, mainly Ghanaians naturally (gotta’ keep it in the family), then after some coaching to remember their lines, arrive back a few months later to sue for divorce! The fake marriages are in the process of being purged from the records, and the Ghanaians, all of whom "only wanted to live in America" are being kicked out back to sunny Africa!

The Yankee’s do some things better than us Brits! If this had happened in Britain, they’d be allowed to stay, same as if they’d hijacked a jet from Afghanistan!

This one is steaming right down the rail-lines and we may as well confront it now.

fr-james_baker_III.jpgAs you know, President Bush set up the Iraq Study Group under the tutelage of good ol’ boy James Baker and Lee Hamilton. Over the next few weeks, the conclusions of this group will become more clear but we have a fair idea of what it will say….

The proposals reportedly include an approach to Iran and Syria — a policy that Robert Gates, a member of the commission, has argued for. Rarely has a government report been more eagerly awaited than the one being prepared by former secretary of state James Baker and former congressman Lee Hamilton, an Indiana Democrat, about how the U.S. can leave Iraq.

Now given that Iran and Syria are both confirmed member of the axis of evil – it’s interesting that Baker and Hamilton are going to recommend sitting down and talking to them.  And what, exactly, will be discussed? This is Bush preparing to discard his own doctrine under the cover provided by this Report from Baker and Hamilton. The consequences will be severe – first and most importantly for the Iraqi people we will betray, but also for the GOP base – which was wanting VICTORY and is now being offered DEFEAT.

Following on from Iranian congratulations, Syria has rushed to offer it’s sincere thanks to the US electorate…

"The outcome of the theses elections is a genuine punishment from the American people to President Bush’s administration that staged a war on Iraq because of incorrect and inaccurate stimulations," Syrian "Information Minister" Dr Mohsen Bilal said in an interview with al-Jazeera, according to the official Syrian news agency SANA. "Therefore the U.S. and British forces are in a mess there now,"

Bilal noted that incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi opposes the war in Iraq.

"This lady has made the word of the American people audible. And this is very comfortable."

Well, if IRAN and SYRIA are comfortable, I’m feeling pretty relaxed – how about you? Wonder how comfortable Israel is feeling? The vultures circle…

john-bolton-un-bg.jpgI am saddened to read that John Bolton is due to be the next casualty of the Democrat victory. it’s an immense shame since he is an excellent Envoy who was confronting the corrupt United Nations. Responsibility for this lies entirely with the timid Bush, who lacked the guts to force through Bolton’s nomination when he had the chance and now, thanks to a REPUBLICAN Senator – Lincoln Chafee – Bolton will fall. Why does the GOP tolerate RINO’s like Chafee? Where has been the discipline and leadership on this vital nomination?

First Rumsfeld, now Bolton – the price of Bush hesitancy is very high. I’m sure Kofi Annan and his pals will be celebrating…

Yes, we all know this is the phrase used by Islamic killers as they commit their acts of vile barbarity.

It’s what Mohammad Atta shouted as he crashed into the Twin Towers, it’s what Zarqawi roared when he beheaded innocents in Iraq. And it’s what supporters of Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison screamed at his victory celebration.

A new day is dawning in Americahat-tip LGF!

swaraaj-American-Eagle-and-Flag-II-Print-C10055018-small.jpgI wanted to offer my congratulations to the US Democrats, who have now won both House and Senate, and whose candidates have pulverised the Republican Party across the United States.

Yes, I know I was grumpy about it yesterday but hey – I’m made of flesh and blood and I react like everyone else does when confronted with what was…unwelcome news! But I have calmed down. Honest.

You see, on reflection, yesterday turned out to be a GOOD day to be a Conservative in the USA. I say that because as other commentators have also been putting on record, the GOP can now renew itself because it HAS to renew itself ….or face President Hillary Clinton in 2008. There is no option to do otherwise.

This is going to be a momentous task and it will need huge change.

Most importantly, Leadership is required. Bush has comprehensively failed in this regard. He has stuttered  but never really started in his second term to give that which the American people want – dynamic articulate and confident leadership.  And his Party has now paid the severest price. Not that Bush is alone in the blame – I believe this must be shared across the current highest echelon within the Party. They have become complacent, smug, unfocused, corrupt…and unworthy.

So the American people were RIGHT to send them the momentous message that hit home yesterday. The American people were RIGHT to reject Bush and his hesitancy on Iraq. The American electorate have done us a favour by stopping the stumbling that has characterised this shambolic second term of the Bush Presidency. And make no mistake about it – the Bush Presidency effectively came to an end last night.  Again, that is good news because he has been going NOWHERE for the past two years and I, like so many others, am sick of it.

So, what can we look forward to?

Well, if 2008 is see revived GOP fortunes, then a Presidential big win by a Republican candidate is key. I favour Rudy Giuliani at this point. I believe that he would trounce Hillary and whilst he is too liberal on some social fronts for my liking, he IS  a man who has shown leadership, and an ability to articulate this when necessary.  That’s what is lacking at the moment and voters sense it. We need the GOP to retain the essence of the Bush doctrine, but make it  MUCH more aggressive and unilaterist, and then sell this to the American people who YEARN to see our troops WIN in Iraq. It’s high time that an all out attack on Big Government was made, and illegal immigration tackled head on by enforcing Borders. It’s also time that the United Nations was taken on – how about having a policy calling for the bozos on the East River to "up shop" and go to France or somewhere that does not cost Americans money? How about supporting Israel when it tackles the Jihadists in Hezbollah? There is SO much that a reinvigorated GOP can do – but it means strengthening core conservative principles, putting forward clear moral values, giving Americans a reason once again to cast their votes FOR the Republican Party.

So, I think a big thank you to the Pelosicrats. And above all, to the US electorate. It’s time for a Republican rising…..cometh the hour…
