An early Friday music moment

By Mike Cunningham On September 21st, 2012 at 8:09 pm

Swerving away from my usual musical choice, this is a song about a painter, but what a painter!

The introduction by Noel Edmonds contains the worst pun I have ever watched on telly, but don’t let that detract from one of the very few ‘pop’ records to find its way into my memories!

HAL DAVID

By David Vance On September 2nd, 2012 at 12:36 pm

I was sad to read of the passing of Hal David. At 91 years, he had a good innings and leaves behind a glorious musical record. His lyrics graced so many wonderful songs. This is just one of them. His words will live on…

ATW MID WEEK JUKEBOX

Isn’t this simply wonderful? I seem to recognise one of the blokes in the dark glasses….NOW where have I seen him before? I miss Roy’s voice and all that honesty in his music. People talk about soul music but I defy anyone to listen to this all the way through and not appreciate the soul on display.

Music to my elderly ears.

JERRY LIEBER RIP

By David Vance On August 23rd, 2011 at 10:01 pm

Been meaning to cover this all day – I refer to the death of Jerry Lieber at the age of 78. Jerry Leiber, one of the most important songwriters in the history of rock & roll – whose 60-year partnership with Mike Stoller produced “Stand By Me,” “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Young Blood,” “On Broadway,”  “Yakety-Yak” and countless other classics – has died of cardiopulmonary failure. He was 78. ”When Jerry and I started to write, we were writing to amuse ourselves,” Stoller told Rolling Stone in 1990. “It was done out of a love of doing it. We got very lucky in the sense that at some point what we wrote also amused a lot of other people.” Lieber and Stoller wrote some terrific songs, Jerry was the lyricist. Here is ONE of his magnificent songs with some great words that will last for a long time to come.

Another wonderful song, poignant, glacial, memorable….from the 18th century. The synchronised walking is also classic and the bass line sublime.

No time last night, but some spare minutes tonight! Here’s the other Elvis singing one of the first 45′s I ever bought. It’s sad the way Presley’s life ended, he was massively talented yet dead by the age of 42.
