Jaws was on telly last night. Yes I watched it. It’s probably only about the fortieth time I’ve seen it this year. ITV1 is running its Jaws Season this week to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of this iconic movie’s general release in the United States (though its film premiere there was actually 20.06.75). By sheer coincidence a holidaymaker in Cornwall has said he may have filmed what could be the first ever sighting of a great white shark in United Kingdom waters. People claim great whites were also seen off Devon and Cornwall in 1999 and 2003, but proof was sadly lacking. However, Nick Fletcher from Rotherham says he has filmed a twelve foot shark hunting dolphins off the coast at St Ives.
It could be a porbeagle or a mako; smaller relatives of the white shark that are very common in waters around the British Isles. On the other hand it could be a juvenile white (it wouldn’t be an adult at this length). Two of Britain’s leading shark experts, Richard Pierce and Oliver Crimmen, have said they cannot rule out the possibility of the sighting being of a great white. If true, it’s fantastic news.
Then along comes officialdom to spoil the party. Marc Thomas, of the Falmouth Coastguard, has dismissed the sighting as ‘rubbish’ and intimated that those who keep an open mind on the subject are ‘scaremongering’. How would he know what species it is? Lifeguards are expert in saving people’s lives, not in elasmobranchology. Thomas doesn’t appear to be enamoured with the news. Like Mayor Larry Vaughn in Jaws, he seems more concerned with ensuring the tourist season doesn’t falter on the back of this potential breakthrough.
Mr Thomas this isn’t 1975!! People across the western world have a much more sophisticated appreciation of the beauty of sharks in this day and age. If anything, verification of the arrival of great white sharks in UK waters could well be a big pull for tourists. Countries from the USA to South Africa to Australia have much healthier coastal tourist economies than we do, even though white sharks are relatively common in all three countries (there have been 19 fatal shark attacks in Australia alone since 1990; there has NEVER been a fatal attack committed by a shark in British waters). Perhaps the Larry Vaughns of Cornwall should look at this as a new phenomenon, not as a mis-perceived threat to the tourist industry.
‘What did you say the name of this shark is?’
‘It’s a Carcharodon carcharias. It’s a great white.’
‘But you don’t have the tooth.’

Death is the one great leveller. We are all going to die; and when it seems that some people seem to have escaped from the Grim Reaper, that is when the blade swings forward. But death is also kind; it can relieve unbearable pain and suffering, it can end years of mental torture through the savage but random infliction of a mental illness or a physical illness which removes all physical control whilst leaving mental powers intact. From time immemorial, the death of a loved one has been a time of sadness, an acknowledgment of relief and a marker from whence those surviving can move on. Whether agnostic or deeply religious, the death of some one truly close has always been a time of solemnity, of an acknowledgment that the one who dies is but a traveller into a region from where there has never been any sign that this future place exists. All that the religions of this world offer is a promise, and, to me at least, the question always has to be asked, “How do you know?” The reply that all one has to do is to believe is but another promise.
While not subscribing to any faith or belief myself these days, and equally not wishing to deny the beliefs of billions of others, I would ask if many readers concur with my views that the proposed showing of the moments of the death of an Alzheimer sufferer is but a film clip too far? The wife of the dead man was interviewed on the radio, and has been prominent in both media interviews and commentary pieces; but her reasons for the national broadcast of her husband’s last moments are muddled and confused. She said she wants to highlight the total effects of Alzheimers’, and how it is not only a brain disease but also a physical one, as the brain functions close down, the patient literally starves to death, or suffers renal failure as their liver ceases working.
My own view is that the film sequence should be excised from the broadcast, as the dying man was not asked for his opinion, nor could he be, and his bereaved wife is surely the wrong person to give assent for such a travesty to be shown on television.

Everyone knows that those poor people interned by the Great Satan at Guantanamo Bay are innocents whose only crime was to have been caught up in the middle of battle zones into which they accidentally strayed whilst dispensing humanitarian need. So, comes the news that at least 30 former Guantanamo Bay detainees have been killed or recaptured after taking up arms against allied forces following their release.
Commander Jeffrey Gordon said the detainees had, while in custody, falsely claimed to be farmers, truck drivers, cooks, small-arms merchants, low-level combatants or had offered other false explanations for being in Afghanistan. "We are aware of dozens of cases where they have returned to militant activities, participated in anti-US propaganda or engaged in other activities," said Commander Gordon.
How many people have lost their lives care of the terrorism practised by the scum released from Guantanamo? Will Amnesty International be calling for an enquiry as to WHY these killers got out? Of course not. It is an article of faith amongst the political left, and the MSM, that Guantanamo Bay is evil. The truth is that is is the INMATES at Guantanamo who are evil and the left are hell-bent to get them released. Says it all.

Wonder what you make of the claims that severly burned Glasgow Airport attack suspect Kafeel Ahmed is being kept alive on the orders of MI5? The alleged Jihadist has third degree burns to 90% of his body and virtually no chance of surviving but insiders claim the security services are keeping him alive to avoid a backlash from radical Muslims.
I would switch the machine of right now and stop wasting British taxpayers money keeping Jihad scum alive. And as for the backlash from "radical Muslims", let us recall that the attack on Glasgow Airport was BY radical Muslims. It was radical Muslims who planned to bring mass carnage to Scotland. It is they who should be afraid of us, not the other way around.

I think this story sums up the indifference, indeed the hostility, that a section of Northern Irish society holds towards the law..
A crowd has attacked police carrying out drugs searches in Londonderry. Two officers sustained minor injuries after petrol bombs, fireworks, stones and bottles were thrown as they searched a house in the Brandywell. Police seized cocaine, ecstasy and cannabis during the searches on Saturday evening.
So the Brandywell contains those prepared to riot to protect their drug dealers? I wonder how endemic drugs are there? One of my issues with loyalist paramilitary scum is that they supply drugs to those areas they infest. I wonder how this works in the Brandywell and elsewhere – who are the dealers, who are the rioters and where is the force of law and order?

Further to Andrew’s post, I wanted to add my voice of disgust at the decision taken by our "British" Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, that proposals to fly the Union flag every day on public buildings are set not to apply to Scotland. Alex Salmond, the First Minister of the Scottish Assembly and Ian Paisley’s new best pal puts it more succinctly when he says "Britishness went bust long ago in Scotland". Brown is actively colluding in the break-up of the United Kingdom. Either Scotland is British or it is not. Salmond, like all good little nationalists, is clear that he wants Scotland out of the UK. That’s his call and I respect it, though don’t agree. But Brown is posing as a champion of the Union whilst facilitating Scotland to become entirely separate. That’s what makes him a fraud, a gross hypocrite and a betrayer of the very office he holds. Labour is all about breaking up the United Kingdom, making us smaller, less substantial, more divided. They are hateful anti-British ideologues who need thrown out of office.

Surprised to read that the UK Independence Party – one of the few conservative political parties in the UK, claims it has funds of as little as £5000 in the bank and no savings or investments.
John Whittaker, the president of the fiercely eurosceptic party, revealed the parlous state of Ukip’s finances during a courtroom battle with the Electoral Commission last week. The commission is taking legal action against Ukip over illegal donations worth more than £360,000. "The current account has a balance of somewhere between £5,000 and £10,000 – that’s it," Mr Whittaker told the court. Donations to Ukip have dried up over the past 18 months, as the party has lurched from one public relations disaster to the next.
If the UKIP can’t run its own finances, how could it hope to run the country?

When it comes to promoting and preserving my country, there is absolutely no compromise as far as I am concerned. This is the United Kingdom in its entirety. Here it is and here it stays. You either pledge allegiance to the United Kingdom, (as people in America do to their nation), its culture and way of life, or you get the hell out and don’t come back. No half-way-house. The symbols of this country should be on display and if certain vocal minorities have a problem with that, they know what they can do!
Apparently the Labour government doesn’t share my conviction. When jaw-dropping Gordy took on the mantle of Prime Minister, he told us to expect a re-energising of Britishness, starting with the flying of the Union Flag from government buildings. Cool! Then we were told Northern Ireland would be exempt, lest it offend those who excused – or voted for those who excused – types that threw incendiary devices into hotels where dog lovers were staying. Fast forward another month and the conviction has been further watered down – this time to appease the MacNasties who unfortunately have the levers of power in Edinburgh.
Scotland is to be exempt from the Union Flag proposals. What next? Are nationalist areas of west Wales also to be exempt? To add insult to injury the MacNasties are now suggesting the gradual dwindling of displays of our country’s flag and the elevation of the Saltire, a rather less appealing vexillological display, to replace it. Like their counterparts in Ulster, Scottish separatists are acutely aware of the power of psychological symbolism. That’s why they have Edinburgh Castle in their sights. I suppose the fact that Edinburgh Castle is also an army barracks for the Royal Regiment of Scotland – a division of the BRITISH Army and therefore outside petty separatist politics – has escaped this Anglophobic rabble.
You can’t criticise the SNP for being obnoxious scumbags. It’s what separatists throughout the UK are best at. You can excoriate the Labour government for not having the courage to follow through on their supposed British convictions.

BTW, hope you were all watching ITV1 last night.
