Right then, I leave shortly for a break in Dubai. Readers may remember I went there last year and I liked it so much I am back for a bit longer. The prospect of guaranteed sunshine, great food, fantastic service and relaxation was too much to resist. I will log on when I get the chance, of course, and will be watching. Here is my expected morning view!
Prime Minister David Cameron is facing calls to apologise and pay financial reparation for Britain’s role in the historic slave trade in the Caribbean. The demands from campaigners have threatened to overshadow the PM’s visit to the island, where he was announcing £25m in British aid for a new Jamaican prison. The country’s PM Portia Simpson-Miller said she had raised the issue in talks. Mr Cameron ruled out paying reparation, saying it was “not the right approach”.
Clearly Cameron is right but were the UK to consider paying “reparations” to Jamaica, it might put another country where some people made a fortune out of slavery in Jamaica in trouble. I refer, of course, to ...Ireland.
The reason I found this interesting is that I was also born in a Quaker village that specifically did not have a pub, Bessbrook. It still doesn’t.
Alcohol will be sold in the ‘dry village’ of Bournville for the first time in 120 years after a newsagent overturned a ban instigated by the Cadbury’s family in 1895.
Kamal Sharma, who owns Mary Vale News, will be allowed to sell alcohol after arguing that his business had suffered since the iconic chocolate plant was sold to Kraft in 2010.
The historic decision, made by Birmingham City Council’s licensing committee, overturns a ban which has been in place since the village was founded by Quaker chocolate baron George Cadbury.
Changing times. I think it’s a shame.
Here’s my article in The Newsletter this morning. Here is the scan of it.
Masses of popcorn needed for this.
So Assad asked Putin for help, the Russian parliament approved the call, and today Russian aircraft have started bombing what they describe as “ISIL targets” in Syria. In truth, they might or might not target ISIS at any particular time. But from the BBC, this is intriguing –
A US defence official said: “A Russian official in Baghdad this morning informed US embassy personnel that Russian military aircraft would begin flying anti-Isil [IS] missions today over Syria. He further requested that US aircraft avoid Syrian airspace during these missions.”
Later, US state department spokesman John Kirby told reporters: “The US-led coalition will continue to fly missions over Iraq and Syria as planned and in support of our international mission to degrade and destroy Isil [IS].”
Western governments still cling to the absurd idea of unseating Assad, in part by arming “rebels” who have a habit of going over to ISIS. Having Russian and Western aircraft in the same airspace, possibly with contradictory aims, doesn’t seem like a good idea altogether. Since they are now involved, I’d pack up and leave ISIS to them, but then I don’t have a severe fetish for controlling every inch of the planet..
It’s really quite remarkable. The leader of the Labour Party is clear.
Jeremy Corbyn: I would not use nuclear weapons
Meanwhile, the Party he leads supports the use of nuclear weapons as a deterrent.
This is considered “new’ thinking.
A German police chief issues a desperate plea. Reports The Telegraph (my emphasis) –
Christian and Muslim refugees should be housed separately in Germany to minimise tensions following growing levels of violence at asylum seeker shelters, a police chief has urged.
Jörg Radek, deputy head of Germany’s police union, said migrants should be divided, following increasing numbers of attacks on Christians in refugee centres.
The liberals’ fluffy lickle “refugees” are attacking Christians so much and so often – in Christian Europe – that a senior police officer calls for their religious seperation. What a demonstration of their “desperation to escape war”, you fools with with your empty heads and platitudes. He goes on –
“I think housing separated according to religion makes perfect sense,” Jörg Radek, deputy head of Germany’s police union, told German newspaper Die Welt, particularly for Muslims and Christians.
I have a better idea: I think countries and whole continents seperated according to religion makes perfect sense. Christians in Europe, muslim rapists and killers back in the crapholes of their own making. Yes, I seriously am advocating that Islam be declared verboten.
Hahaha….”strong message here”…brilliant from Corbyn.
Look at the reaction from one Labour commentator to another one stating magic money trees exist.
