It’s terrible news from Cumbria and we can only hope and pray it doesn’t get any worse.

Twelve people have been killed by a gunman who went on the rampage across Cumbria in north-west England. Taxi driver Derrick Bird shot dead a colleague in the town of Whitehaven before driving through the countryside apparently targeting people at random […]

Mr Bird’s body was found in a wooded area in Boot in the Lake District and two weapons have been recovered.

I know the area well. A good friend is from Whitehaven and I’ve done plenty of hiking on the fells around Boot. This is the place we’re talking about, left, until today a piece of Heaven in England. There’s plenty of time to chew on these dreadful events later.

For now, I’m thinking of the victims and bereaved. The news coming out is heartbreaking, the victims losing their lives at random, people in the wrong place at the wrong time.

  1. I always fear the danger of " copycats " after events like this.

  2. Phantom- that thought occurred to me as well.

  3. That was certainly the case in China, with the awful series of murders of school kids. There had not been incidents like that before ( or so I believe ) and then all of a sudden there were three or four of them

There are more disturbed souls out there than any of us would like to contemplate

  4. The worst thing is that 12 people who were going about their daily business are now suddenly dead and their loved ones had no time to prepare for such sudden loss or to be able to say goodbye as can be planned for with losses due to old age/illness.

  5. What a terrible, disgusting attack on people going about their daily lives. Those poor people and their families.

My thoughts are with their families

  6. it is a terrible thing to happen and my heart goes out to those families.

but i still cant get away from the feeling that somewhere in the med is a small boat filled with angry scumbags screaming "it should be us on telly!!!"

oh well shame about the headlines eh?

  7. Tragic. Timely and thoughtful post Pete.

  8. These guys have problems. But I’ve always noticed the biggest problem they have is one gigantic ego; the readiness to close their eyes to human suffering and put their own pain above everything else.

Horrible to think this modern ugliness violates even the Lake District, the place we all learned about in poetry class.

If solitude, or fear, or pain, or grief,
Should be thy portion, with what healing thoughts
Of tender joy wilt thou remember me.

  9. I wonder if Lefty Michael Moore will now make a sequal to his much acclaimed (which I personally distain) movie: "Bowling for Columbine"?

This will be titled: "Cricket for Cumbria"!

I’ve already heard Michael has bought the rights to the story of the Israeli assault on the "Humanitarian activists" ship.

It’ll be titled: "The Turktanic struck an Iggy Burg"

OK, That was bad, but it’s early yet!
