ANGLICAN CHURCH “INSTITUTIONALLY RACIST”?

By ATWadmin On June 17th, 2007

You have to laugh at liberals self-loathing. The Church of England is institutionally racist – says the Church of England!

Ethnic minorities are being marginalised in parishes and black and Asian clergy have little chance of reaching the Church’s higher echelons, says the study, to be released this week. It warns that too little has been done to tackle "institutional racism" – the phrase used to devastating effect (for liberals, not for sensible people) by Sir William Macpherson, the former High Court judge, in his findings on the bungled police investigation into the murder of the black teenager Stephen Lawrence. The report, commissioned by the archbishops of Canterbury and York, is expected to spark a fierce debate at next month’s General Synod in York. Delegates will be asked to examine the clergy’s failure to "integrate and utilise" the gifts of ethnic minorities.

Isn’t it pathetic to listen to these lost clerics wallow in self-loathing, self-hatred. Then again, if they stuck to teaching the Bible – which they are of course mostly in rebellion from – they wouldn’t have the same amount of spare time on their hands! Heaven help them!

The term "institutionalised racisism is one of the most misleading terms used but it is not the fault of these clergy. It was a legacy of the Macpherson Inquiry.

Leaving that aside the use of the terms to describe what they are talking about, how do we know that they don’t have a point? If they do, don’t they have a duty to highlight it?

  2. David,

"Then again, if they stuck to teaching the Bible – which they are of course mostly in rebellion from – they wouldn’t have the same amount of spare time on their hands!"

Just to be awkward: would this be the same Bible that claims the Israelites were God’s chosen, er … race?

  3. It is curious how this ‘self loathing’ has permeated almost every corner of this nation. The Church of England is institutionaly racist, so is the Police, the Health Service, the Legal System, the world of Politics and so on and so on. The Armed Services are also under threat. Oh, and of course the Media (the Blogging World excepted) has completely swallowed this line. Yet we have much to be proud of and we should shout it from the roof tops.

At the same time that we are decrying our culture, another culture which believes in public execution by hanging from cranes, stoning or decapitation, a culture which supports suicide bombing of innocent civilians and children, the subordination of women and, in some instances, female genital mutilation , honour killings and the teaching of children to hate, appears to be flourishing. But yet they do not decry their culture/religion and, it appears, neither do we.

This culture is the complete antithesis of what we believe and yet we go out of our way not to confront it. This is wrong. We must stand up for our values. They are far superior to this alternative.

    >>This culture is the complete antithesis of what we believe<<

LOL, Peter. Those who so regularly condemn such "self-loathing" are usually the very ones who would support public hanging!

Come to think of it, they actually insisted that these "antithesis" cultures carry out this barbaric practice in the case of Sadaam!

  5. Of course the C of E is racist, there are hardly any hindu, sikh or muslim clergy for one thing.

  6. Ross,

Extending your theory, can we expect you to also condemn the Home Office, Judicial system and Prison Service as "Institutionally Racist’ for locking up black men on a ratio of sixteen percent of the prison population, whilst the total black population of Britain is around five percent?

This figure exists as a result of black men being convicted and sentenced either by a jury or magistrates!

  7. Ross,

"Of course the C of E is racist, there are hardly any hindu, sikh or muslim clergy for one thing."

    LOL :0)

  8. Dawkins,
    Or atheist, for that matter…

  9. No on second thoughts I can’t see much discrimination against atheists :)
    Just kidding, Mad.

  10. Adrian,

Though I’m told it’s damned hard for a Catholic priest to become an imam, and rightly so.

  11. I agree with you aileen, this article makes for uncomfortable reading.

All the more reason it should be faced and indeed examined closely, with a view to tackling these awkward revelations.

That’s the right thing to do, and not to be afraid of dicovering darkness, and shiming a light upon it.

After all isn’t christianity a total self examination of the highest order.

  12. Hard to understand the C of E calling itself "institutionally racist". The Archbishop of York is the second highest prelate in the church. Last time I looked he was black.

  13. Only 2.2 per cent of all clergy are from ethnic minority backgrounds, compared to 7.9 per cent of the working population in the 2001 census, and 3.2 per cent of all Church of England members.

7.9% in the working population? How many of these are non-Christian and why was this figure cited at all? I suspect it was to lessen the impact of the 3.2% (ethnic minorities in the CofE) versus 2.2% (ethnic minorities in the clergy) – i.e. no discrimination at all! In any case, the pillock who wrote the report is himself needing institutionalised.

  14. Dawkins,

Just did a search for the word race in the Bible (KJV). It doesn’t refer to the Israelites but to running the race, so I’m not sure what you mean, Could you explain. Or do you mean (chosen) people. Peopleism doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.
