TODAY’S HEROES, TOMORROW’S ENEMIES

By Pete Moore On January 26th, 2012

You’ll be getting used to more of this:

USA TODAY – The Justice Department is funding an unusual national training program to help police deal with an increasing number of volatile confrontations involving highly trained and often heavily armed combat veterans.

Developers of the pilot program, to be launched at 15 U.S. sites this year, said there is an “urgent need” to de-escalate crises in which even SWAT teams may be facing tactical disadvantages against mentally ill suspects who also happen to be trained in modern warfare.

Much more of it. For some idea of what’s coming down the road, consider that more Falklands War veterans have committed suicide than  were killed in the conflict.

  1. When the compulsory redundancies in the UK military were announced earlier this week, a somewhat related thought crossed my mind.

The government has long cozied up to the police, and ‘the Force’ has subsequently deteriorated into a politically correct induced state of increasing indolence, to such a degree that they can barely cope with current levels of crime.

Now they – our government that is, – feel that they can piss-off our military even further than they already have, by once again treating them with the contempt they do not deserve.

Surely this is all very remiss, if not actually very shortsighted of them? if they feel that should a state of major civil unrest develop, – which is always a possibility, – that they can rely on a police force of largely middle aged, unfit bureacrats to defend them, especially if the protester contigent has a fair number of the badly treated military among them.

Could this become a replay of ‘Oliver Cromwell, and all that jazz’? We did it once, with a fair result, no reason not to think something similar might work again.

  2. When I read the strapline I immediately thought of the Mujahideen in the wake of the Afghan Soviet war.

  3. I doubt if this Falklands war statistic means anything at all.
For example, what does a ‘veteran’ actually mean? Someone who fired a gun in anger, or a cook on one of the ships?
I have a nephew who was in the TA for a while and spent a few months in Iraq, but never even heard any gunfire. Would he now be termed a veteran?

  4. “spent a few months in Iraq, but never even heard any gunfire. Would he now be termed a veteran?”

Why not? Besides, those at the rear can be as easily traumatised as those at the front line.

  5. That’s a penalty kick for Colm Noel.

  6. I am not going to lower myself to the bottom of the barrel just for an arse joke 😉

  7. I think there needs to be far more care to help our UK servicemen make the adjustment back to civvy life. There is a cynicism about the way our Governments use our military, and it really needs to change.
Being in the military is like being in a big family, and the bonds of comradeship and interdependency are very strong.
Then there is the “adrenaline buzz” of action, of coming under fire. Young men leaving the services as amputees of with terrible memories need lots of ongoing help to make the adjustments and feel that there is still a life to look forward to.

That’s why I applaud stuff like this

  8. Yes Colm. Best not to get yourself into a hole.

  9. Hasn’t the stereotype of crazed out of control veterans (as appear in countless Vietnam films) been shown to be a myth? They have lower rates of violence than the general population when controlled for age and sex.

  10. they also know that our police will be facing thousand of assault rifles sold by our government to drug dealers

  11. LESSON IN OBAMA’S CONQUEST OF AMERICA PLAN: 1) MAKE NO MISTAKE, OBAMA IS NOT STUPID.

Government (aka: Obama’s Nazis) are preparing for a public insurrection from the Conservatives and he sees the former military as the spearhead of the armed, militant juggernaut.

So he is taking pre-emptive action by forming these, so called, “training programmes” in order to brainwash the police into believing the ENEMY are the ex-military people.

Unlike the 1960’s, when the police were mostly merely high-school (2nd level) graduates and pro-military, many modern police forces require partial or complete 3rd level degrees and in attending college/university they have been tainted by Liberal ideologies they were exposed to in their 3rd level training.

Ergo, they will follow the Liberal dictates and see every event (peaceful or not) that an ex-military person is involved in as a threat to the current regime.
