The Ulster Unionist Party masses gather to choose a new leader today and it is a matter of supreme irrelevance to most people. My bet is that former UTV news reader Mike Nesbitt will win the leadership. Mike stands for more of the same, if a little more liberal. He is a triangulator in my view with no strong views on anything, so a perfect leader for the UUP. By contrast, John McCallister, is an even more progressive liberal albeit with some more changes to policy on offer – such as going into Opposition. I understood that Dignitas are sponsoring the event and I am sure that whoever wins the result will be the same – the sustained demise of the former “natural party of Government”.
