You can’t have a Large Coke, but here spark this joint instead….

By The Troll On June 4th, 2012

ALBANY — Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said on Monday that he would support a proposal by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to significantly curb the number of people who could be arrested for marijuana possession as a result of police stops.

Mr. Cuomo urged lawmakers on Monday to change state law to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana in public view, an offense that critics say leads to unfair charges against thousands of people who are ordered to empty their pockets during police stops that have proliferated under the Bloomberg administration’s stop-and-frisk practice.

  1. This almost makes sense

His Food Control policies, not so much

  2. It’s not a bad policy, but it is a contradiction to his stance on sugar besides if you smoke some good weed and get the munchies…. doesn’t that lead to obesity, is there something in the weed that fights the calories?

  3. First step towards Prohibition of what will soon be a long list of foods

Exactly what we do not need – each locality with their own food policies

  4. It is consistent with his stance on sugar. He isn’t anti-sugar, he’s anti excess. He isn’t saying it is ok to smoke a one pound joint. He’s looking at it from a moderation standpoint. Why clog up courts and cops with low level drug violations?

The police commissioner also supports this change.

  5. maybe because it’s against the law counselor… if you don’t like the law change them.

Sugar and soda is a legal product, Pot is an ILLEGAL product.

The nazi is choosing which laws he will support, or not (gee where have I heard that b4)

and making a legal product taboo, which he has also a habit of doing.

None of it is HIS JOB

  6. What if we don’t want the little Boaton weasel to tell us what we can and cannot buy in a restaurant?

  7. does NYC have a balanced budget or surpluses. Please say it does, because if not what is this billion dollar mayor worrying about anything other than that, if it doesn’t?

  8. Troll – do you read your own posts, he is supporting a change in the law, not saying he won’t enforce the law. And calling a Jewish person a Nazis because you don’t agree with him politically is far more revealing of you.

Phantom – You could have voted for Thompson or Ferrer and tell us how that would have worked out.

  9. There are surpluses ( ” rainy day funds ” )

But taxes are very high and huge pension obligations, often imposed by a hostile State govenment, mean there are problems ahead

  10. It’s great to see sense breaking out at last. The so-called “war on drugs” has always been unwinnable and has led to vast losses to taxpayers in terms of the costs of imprisonment and vast gains to orgainsed crime and the banks that knowingly launder their loot, with the blessing of the enforcement agencies in the countries whose populations generate that wealth for the drug trade, i.e. the USA and Europe.

  11. Mahons

You are sounding like Pete the Nihilist

I did not say that he is always wrong. I say Food Nannyism and Food Prohibition is an inappropriate use of mayoral authority

  12. Phantom – The Mayor been attacking the municipal pension crisis, and taking the lead there.

  13. Peter

What do you think about Food Prohibition?

  14. Phantom – What food have we been deprived of? He isn’t attacking the big cups of beer at Jeremy’s.

  15. The mayor and governor are not strong enough on pensions

They are better than their predecessors but that is no praise at all

And the Republicans and Democrats in the Legislature are all on the take to the unions

  16. This is the camel’s nose in the tent

There will be a very long list of foods probibited if this is allowed to stand

  17. Phantom

I’m against it (see a few nights ago) but I want to see simple labelling on all processed foods and drinks which will disclose the necessary details on fat, calories and salt. That way, people will get the chance to make an informed decision about what they eat and drink.

  18. Phantom – Look at the fight they have on their hands even with the steps they have taken. And the legislature is the greatest nest of vipers since the Borgias.

  19. Peter

We already have such labeling on nearly any food purchased in a store and ( here anyway ) on most food items served in chain restaurants

This has been the case for aome years

  20. oh so in other words the budget’s not balanced yet he has the time to pen a an editorial in todays USA Today about how his ban is for the greater good.

sounds to me like his priorities are more than just slightly out of line.

  21. Troll – he’s multi-tasking. He’s helped improve the City in so many areas I wish we could find another sensible Republican billionaire to run for the office.

  22. Rather than wringing our hands about the obesity epidemic, we in New York City are once again taking action to improve the lives of our residents. History will likely bear out that once the controversy dies down, we will look back and wonder why we did not do this sooner.

Bold actions to protect the public’s health always stir controversy at first. Smoke-free bars and restaurants, trans fat restriction and calorie posting in restaurants were all met with skepticism, but are now widely popular in New York City. They are also saving many lives each year, and life expectancy in New York City is outpacing that of the United States.

yet the city is in debt, I’m glad your waistline is more important than a balanced budget

Michael R. Bloomberg is the 108th mayor of New York City.

  23. he is not a republican

  24. He is misreading the ( successful and now popular ) tobacco bans in public spaces.

He now wants to ban everything that he thinks is bad.

No one should drink a 32 oz Coke – only an idiot would do it- but a mayor has no right to tell anyone what they can eat or drink.

  25. Mahons

You keep saying that he has done good things

We are quite aware of his

  26. This

  27. and its NOT multi tasking if he hasn’t accomplished his primary job as ceo of the city, which is making it financially sound.

how man years has he been mayor? 11 years and still not balanced, yes he sounds like a true NY success

  28. The budget is balanced

The future pension issues are very substantially created by the State, which forces increases on the city. Fact.

Bloomberg has been a fairly prudent manager

  29. Although originally a Democrat he switched parties and ran as a Republican to win office. The last time he ran as an Independent on the Republican line. He is far and away a moderate, and respected by the sensible in both parties.

His fiscal policy is one of the best in any American big city (I’d argue the best). As one of the richest men in America he has enough fu money to actually work outside the box on a number of issues.

  30. hey idiot… how do you call 100 BILLLION Dollars of Debt BALANCED??????

    New York City Debt Outstanding
    Sep 13, 2011
At the end of fiscal year 2011, New York City reached a milestone: the amount of debt outstanding passed $100 billion. As total debt outstanding has grown – by 83 percent since 2002 – the forms of debt the City issues have also diversified. This growth affects the city budget in the form of higher debt service costs, which are projected to be 10 percent of the city’s expense budget by 2015. Explore what makes up this $100 billion debt number in our new interactive graphic.

gee the debt has grown 83% while Bloomberg has been Mayor, but he’s worried about your waistline.

There ya go folks NYrs love Bloomberg According to mahons he’s a great multitasker and a fantastic mayor. Yet while he has been emporer of NYC it’s debt has grown 83%.

And thats how you should judge mahons views on any american issue. Balanced my ass…

  31. You seem to be a very unhappy man, with the endless name calling, the anger and bitterness that never quite goes away.

Once you’re finished yelling at the neighbors’ kids and kicking the dog, you may want to look up the meaning of ” balanced budget “. Clue – it does not mean that there is no debt. It doesn’t mean that the amount of debt went down either.

The budget is balanced but there is a reason to be concerned about debt. As I said. For reasons that I won’t bother getting into with the likes of you this morning.

  32. http://economics.about.com/cs/economicsglossary/g/balanced_budget.htm

No wonder some people are unsuccessful in convincing people of things. They don’t have the slightest idea what the terms they use mean.

  33. a debt doesn’t grow by 83% if a budget is balanced. a balanced budget is you spend no more than you take in, borrowing is not income.

    Are you really that stupid?

  34. Troll -

“gee the debt has grown 83% while Bloomberg has been Mayor”

And the national debt grew by 105% under George W Bush.

    You voted for him, yes?

  35. Troll, you are being even more rude than normal. You have called at least three people stupid today!

  36. Troll

    Read the definition

    Then

    Read it again

    Then

Go to a reputable dictionary or whatever and look it up. Read that several times.

Call your local community college and ask an accounting professor what the term means.

You don’t know what the term means.

Because balancing a budget has nothing to do with incurring debt or paying down debt.

It refers to the total number of dollars the city or state takes in , in taxes, service fees or whatever, vs the total number of dollars they pay out- in wages, for equipment, for rent, for –interest on– debt

Incurring more debt or paying down preexisting debt don’t directly have anything to do with whether a budget is balanced or not. They are different issues. They are why the deficit is not the same as the debt.

This is why most states have debt, while remaining in compliance with the Condtitutional requirement to have a balanced budget.

  37. Troll – having established yourself as the boy who cried wolf (and spelled it walf) do you think you have any credibility on any debate here?

  38. Some Democrat clown on MSNBC tonight used the same wrong understanding of the term to attack Gov Brown in Wisconsin

Politicians and political community organizers don’t always know their accounting so good.

  39. MSNBC is as silly as Fox, but from a different angle. That Ed Show is a carnival of fools.

  40. It really is embarrassing, they are so over the top partisan

They are cheerleading for the recall tonight and are saying that all who oppose the recall of Walker ( not Brown ) is a tool of corporations

Those who support the recall are ” the grassroots ” of course

  41. CNN was bad as well, kept the mantra of how anti-Walker folks were outspent, how Obama did better than Romney in exit polls. Make no mistake, Walker’s victory, 154 days before election, puts Wisconsin (and Michigan?) in the toss-up category for the Presidential election.

  42. Yep.

    Now, it gets interesting.
