It’s all gone Pete Tong for Ulster Unionist end of the peer Lord Maginnis this morning when he appeared to suggest a connection between gay marriage and bestiality on the BBC Nolan Show! Cue media feeding frenzy and poor old Mike Nesbitt in damage limitation mode. Never mind. For what it is worth, I think Maginnis is wrong in what he said however there is a point, albeit poorly made;
“Same-sex marriage could lead to calls for polygamy and incest to be allowed, a Christian campaign group in Northern Ireland has claimed. DUP MPs Nigel Dodds and Jeffrey Donaldson, as well as Baroness Paisley, are among the vice presidents of the Keep Marriage Special campaign, which calls itself a “broad alliance of Christians”. Its claims were criticised by gay rights campaigners, who said that the gay and lesbian community was under “constant attack”. Under government proposals, which are out to consultation, the law would be changed to allow same-sex couples in England and Wales to have a marriage through a civil ceremony. While the change would not apply here, it has stirred strong debate. In Keep Marriage Special’s response to the consultation, it wrote: “If the only basis for marriage is the desire of the parties to get married, then there is, according to the logic of this proposal, no reason not to open up marriage to more than just same-sex couples. “Polygamy, polyandry and incest would all be permissible.”
Well for starters there ARE already calls for Polygamy. That’s just a fact. As for incest, I also fear that there are some in favour of that obscenity. Not sure about beastiality but if you can warp the concept and legal definition of marriage out of all proportion, who knows where it goes?
I have no issues with gay people, but I do have an issue with some of their activists demanding that Churches are forced to go against their core beliefs and indulge in oxymoronic ceremonies. As a libertarian, I think we should all live and let live. Lawfully.
