If Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood candidate for president Mohammed Mursi (pictured at left) wins, Egypt’s capital moves from Cairo to Jerusalem. So stated a leading Islamic leader, Safwat Hagazy, during a recent campaign rally as Mursi and MB head honcho Mohammed Badei looked on.
Outrageous? Fantastic? Not in Muslim world. As crack Islamic law expert Stephen Coughlin pointed out to me today, the 2008 charter of the Organization of the Islamic conference similarly calls for OIC’s “permanent headquarters” to be moved to Jerusalem after the city’s “liberation.”
“Our capital shall not be Cairo, Mecca or Medina. It shall be Jerusalem with God’s will. Our chants shall be: ‘millions of martyrs will march towards Jerusalem’,” prominent cleric Safwat Hagazy said, according to the video aired by Egypt’s religious Annas TV on Tuesday. The video went viral after being posted on YouTube – accompanied by English subtitles by Memri TV -, with 61,691 views until Thursday night.
“The United States of the Arabs will be restored on the hands of that man [Mursi] and his supporters. The capital of the [Muslim] Caliphate will be Jerusalem with God’s will,” Hegazy said, as the crowds cheered, waving the Egyptian flags along with the flags of the Islamist Hamas group, which rules the Gaza Strip.
“Tomorrow Mursi will liberate Gaza,” the crowds chanted.
“Yes, we will either pray in Jerusalem or we will be martyred there,” Hegazy said.
I wouldn’t worry overmuch about campaign promises. Over here one guy who got elected was going to bring down unemployment and another guy was going to start a colony on the moon.

What tension? We can be happy and social, or stay by ourselves. Human nature is myriad, but it’s the state which seeks to constrain and bend it to conform to political imperitives.
There is no “need” for society, we simply have it as a natural result of human nature. Just two people having contact is a social thing. Civil society will exist for as long as humans walk on the planet.
The great fallacy that many make is to conflate state with society, to jump from the existence of human society to the assumption there is a need for state. They are two whoilly seperate things. in fact it is the state which smothers and buries society. It kills human nature and society. The state is the enemy of society.

Exactly, and there can be no satisfying social contact between those two when one has a surplus and the other is starving. Whether the imbalance is adjusted within a marriage, a family, tribe, city, ethnic nation or state is in principle irrelevant. Everyone knows and feels that there is always a price to be paid for togetherness, whether in family or state, and a sense of society can’t emerge where there are gross inequalities (unless that society is threatened, perhaps, and has to fall back on things like race or who holds a certain passport).
There are countless examples from around the world, but especially in Britain since the 1980s, of how the former collapses when the latter emerges. On the other hand, one of the reasons why, say, rural Ireland was socially so cohesive for such a long time is that there were no obvious major differences in wealth among the people.

Your theory falls when applied to Britain. Until the 1968ers rose to power there was no more cohesive cociety around, despite wealth differentials certainly greater than today. Despite these differences, we accepted that we were British and that we were all muddling along and in it together whatever our station.
It was the smashing of the family and importation of millions of aliens which sounded the death knell for that cohesiveness, so I won’t take any lessons from the Left on that.
Now we know what socialism will deliver – guaranteed – through both theory and the facts of history: little wealth differentials among the masses because they are poverty stricken, and a tiny, vastly wealthy elite.
We also know that nothing can hold a candle to capitlaism and free markets for generating wealth across all of society, spreading it around, closing wealth differentials and – little noticed but ultra important – disseminating power from elites down through society and, thus, keeping elites from inflicting tyranny.
On this last point, it’s no coincidence that the rise of the police state in the US, UK and Europe happens alongside the fascistic mega-regulation of capitalism and markets by states.

The corporate sector (which is not competitive capitalism – the corporations are ALL owned by the same people) uses its ownership of the political class to impose impossible levels of regulation on any genuine capitalists in order to prevent them becoming an alternative source of power. Those who break through the mesh are usually co-opted, an example being Richard Branson.
