A Pauline Conversion?

By Mike Cunningham On June 22nd, 2012

Not a miracle, or anything near it, but perhaps just an understandable reaction from an honest man?

  1. The problem began when I resolved to come back with a film that showed both sides of the coin. Actually there are many more than two. Which is why my film is called Forty Shades of Grey. But only one side was wanted back in Dublin. My peers expected me to come back with an attack on Israel. No grey areas were acceptable.

An Irish artist is supposed to sign boycotts, wear a PLO scarf, and remonstrate loudly about The Occupation. But it’s not just artists who are supposed to hate Israel. Being anti-Israel is supposed to be part of our Irish identity, the same way we are supposed to resent the English.

An interesting piece, and that’s the end of his funding.

  2. He’s an artist, nuff said.

  3. How dare he think for himself. It’s all good vs evil, everyone knows that.

  4. Artist receiving public funding realizes preconceived Irish group-think about Israel is based on fallacy.

After this epiphany, he hedges his bet and does a film called: “40 Shades of Grey” rather than a more honest film: “Irish Are Unfairly Prejudiced against Israel”

    Hardly courageous, imo.

  5. One might ask why there is funding for ” art “, esp politicized art.

Esp on the part of a country whose treasury is not exactly overflowing.

Someone needs to get priorities straight.

  6. Patty

I’d think that he’s courageous enough, esp as compared with all the other ” ahtists ”

The Israeli – Arab conflict is not black and white. There are moral dilemmas and shades of grey all over the issue.

He sounds like he’s trying to look at the issue fairly, and is not answering agitprop with more agitprop. There are many who will regard him as an enemy because of it. His future funding is likely endangered.

    That’s courage to me.

  7. “One might ask why there is funding for ” art “, esp politicized art.”

The point of being politically connected is to screw the taxpayer. As in the RoI, the art establishment here is stuffed full of wealthy Leftists who love nothing more than chiselling the working man out of his hard earned.

  8. The Irish can only see reality in four colours; green, red, white and blue.
In my view the innate dislike/animosity towards Israel and the Jews, springs from the teachings of the Catholic church and the Orthodox church, who kept their congregations in a state of ignorance, fear and dependence.

I salute Nick Larkin for having the moral integrity to say what he saw for himself.
I consider myself a champion and defender of Israel; but they have their fair share of criminals, charlatans, liars and “nasties.”
    They always did.
However, apart from the fact that they are the people chosen by God, they are also the only true democracy in the Middle East.
As the West sinks under the consequences of its abandonment of Christian values and Muslim immigration, so the attacks on a free democratic state increase.

    Could there be a connection?
    Hmmmm, I wonder.. ;)

  9. I went in exactly the opposite direction to Larkin. Still, the press in Israel is reasonably free so I’ll take an example of a report from an Israeli source and fill in the gaps:

    http://www.debka.com/article/22108/

    - Syrian President Bashar Assad Thursday night, June 21, ordered his entire Air Force fleet of fighter bombers grounded, for fear that more pilots might defect after Col. Hasan Merhi al-Hamadeh flew to Jordan aboard a MiG-21.

Our sources disclose that the defector came from the village of Meles in the Idlib district of northern Syria where he has left his wife, four children and family. This village is one of the few parts of the embattled district to remain in Free Syrian Army rebel hands. Their agents were certainly involved in helping to arrange his escape. -

Hmmm…. From that last paragraph, I’d say that the family of the defecting Syrian pilot were more likely to be hostages though, strictly speaking, the agents of the ‘Free Syrian Army’ would have been involved.

  10. Allan,
saw this and immediately thought of you…

  11. “hating Israel is not part of my personal national identity. Neither is hating the English. I hold an Irish passport, but nowhere upon this document does it say I am a republican, or a Palestinian”

Yes, this man is evidently one of Ireland’s intellectual giants.

In fact, his Sindo piece is so full of childish reasoning (the above example is not the worst) that any conversion on his part has to be totally phoney.

And the reasons for this new love of Israel: neon pictures of Jesus in Bethlehem, posters of Palestinian martyrs, Gaza kids on drugs and – inevitably – Swastikas on walls.

My, it’s amazing how travelling in Israel helps one get rid of so many prejudices.

Why is that I can walk into a bookshop, pick up a translation of the koran and read for myself the despicable teachings of that ideology towards me (kufr) yet i can’t seem to find a translation of the talmud and its views on non-jews (goyim – literally, cattle)? From what I’ve seen of it, it’s a very dirty secret.

  13. Hey Aberdeen Alan, let me as a Jew tell you what should be obvious; whatever the translation is (and I really don’t know), the jew-in-the-street doesn’t actually hold the view that non-Jews are “cattle”, we love and support the country we live in. Almost all synagogue services contain a prayer for the well-being of the Queen and the government of the UK; you won’t find anybody prouder of England and indeed Western civilisation than I am.

    Great to read this article!

  15. Allan@Aberdeen

Its neither a secret not dirty.

Goyim means literally ‘Nations’ referring to human people. Nothing more nothing less.

The Hebrew word for cattle is Sor. Some older words fallen out of usage include Behema, Miqneh and Baqar.

    Try a better bookshop.

  16. We hosted a young Israeli couple a few years back in Belfast. They had both been recently released from their National Service, and had been sent to Belfast with a view to possibly getting jobs there (I know, it sounds crazy!). Whilst they were here, they visited the local Rabbis etc, but what they wanted was to go out and meet people their own age. So we brought them to Maddens – great trad music, good people, and the best Guinness in Belfast. Considering where we were, it wasn’t long before the Palestinian debate started. The girl didn’t really voice an opinion, but the guy listened and gave his views. The people he talked to didn’t agree with him, but listened, and gave their opinions. Everyone got on very well, and left as friends. I remember him saying, ‘I suppose, here, we are the enemy.’ But it didn’t stop them from asking us to bring them back a few nights later.

After they left, a few of the people who had debated with them said that it was the first time they had actually spoken to an Israeli about the conflict, and that they had found it enlightening, though it hadn’t changed their views. I felt the same. I still oppose what Israel is doing, but I’ve spoken to an Israeli (ex)soldier, and feel I got a better understanding of the situation than I would ever have gotten from the media.

  17. The Talmud is really long, 5400 pages, and its really boring. I’d say that the huge majority of Jews have never read it.

Since you’re so curious, go learn Hebrew and read it yourself. Who knows, you may decide to convert.

  18. Seimi

Thats the Maddens I want to visit the next time!

  19. Phantom, that’s the same Maddens myself and Paul offered to take you to. David declined, but the offer is still there. Anytime.

  20. Thank you. i do look forward to taking you up on that.

  21. Just give me a shout.

  22. Noel: any conversion on his part has to be totally phoney.

Yeah. Anyone even vaguely familiar with the man knows he’s always been an arch Zionist. He has serious form, which makes many of the comments, particularly Patty Cake’s, rather funny.

  23. Patty Cake’s is right, he’s not courageous, just another racist zionist (is there any other kind) on the make.

  24. Why is that I can walk into a bookshop, pick up a translation of the koran and read for myself the despicable teachings of that ideology towards me (kufr) yet i can’t seem to find a translation of the talmud and its views on non-jews (goyim – literally, cattle)?

Probably because you are an idiot.

    http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=talmud+in+english

  25. Fews – read what I wrote slowly at a speed at which you may understand what I meant. Keywords – walk into bookshop

So, I walk into a bookshop, let’s say Waterstone’s in Union Street, Aberdeen (a fine English name? Maybe try Wasserstein’s) and I go over to the religious section where I can find the koran and all sorts of stuff relating to islam, but nothing on the actual scriptural content of judaism.

davieboy – what you write mirrors my experience but it still doesn’t address the ideology and, taken from the talmud, the supremacist jew who takes land from palestinians because he, the jew, is God’s Chosen One and all the rest are shabbat goy, finds holy justification therein.

Anabel – your lie is what is politely termed ‘disinformation’ and there are plenty here who will snort it up like a line of coke. Here’s the reality:

    http://www.gilad.co.uk/writings/gilad-atzmon-killing-goyim-and-beyond.html

Bizarrely, the Israeli state is kicking out blacks and importing Afrikaners. Now Afrikaners do have rights to land in South Africa because they were there first and did settle much of what is being stolen from them, but there is something rather sinister in jews being at the forefront of the campaign to impose destitution on whites in SA then offering palestinian land to Afrikaners who are driven from their own country. Still, in extremis, even jews will admit to being the ‘white man’, the same white man which some of their number wish to destroy – totally bizarre.

  26. 80 refugees are rounded up as Israel’s Interior Minister declares, ‘this country belongs to the white man’

  27. They beggars have changed places, but the lash goes on.

  28. “I went in exactly the opposite direction to Larkin. Still, the press in Israel is reasonably free so I’ll take an example of a report from an Israeli source and fill in the gaps:
    Allan,
this is an illogical statement from one who consistently rubbishes the State of Israel, and even questions their Jewish heritage -an incredible insult to all those who suffered through the persecutions, pogroms and the horrors of the Holocaust for being mistakenly labelled “Jewish.”
    So make up your mind.
Logically your position requires you to rubbish and distrust everything said and done by your pseudo Jews. Using selected facts, figures and personalities to support your argument is intellectually dishonest.

  29. The Talmud is a written version of the Jewish oral law as received by Moses. If you like, the “unabridged edition” of Jewish religious law. The rest of it is a commentary made up of the opinions of Jewish sages over a period of hundreds of years.
Some would argue that the Talmud is what Jewish lawyers cut their teeth on…
As a Goy I found it incredibly boring, and I would imagine that many Jewish people feel the same.
Incidentally, my understanding is that a Goy or the Goyim, is/are “the rest”. The other nations who do not know the true God, and are not members of the Chosen People. It may be used in a derogatory way, but none of my Jewish in laws have ever intimated that it was anything more than that.

  30. Agit, if you had bothered to read the content of the post which you are referring to i.e. the report on Syria in an Israeli outlet, then there would be no illogicality. Btw using selected facts figures and personalities to support an argument is exactly what debate and argument is about. If the selected facts, figures and personalities which you (don’t) put forward to support your arguments had any weight, you might be able to persuade my open mind to accept your arguments.

In this reference work, you will find from the ideology of the talmud that you are indeed goy – an animal. Do take some time to read it.

  31. Allan,

“Btw using selected facts figures and personalities to support an argument is exactly what debate and argument is about”

I see your problem. An argument is supposed to be able to account for all the facts, not selected facts.

As for your problem finding the book you’re after in Waterstones, I’m not sure I understand the difficulty.

  32. Indeed Frank, and some facts are unselected and buried only to be unearthed – then what?

  33. From what I’ve seen of it, it’s a very dirty secret.

That is because what you have seen of it is made up nonsense on the web, and the problem is you believe made up nonsense.

  34. Fews – I replied to you above on my experience of….walking….into…. bookshop. Please respond.
