According to several reports in the Arabic media, prominent Muslim clerics have begun to call for the demolition of Egypt’s Great Pyramids—or, in the words of Saudi Sheikh Ali bin Said al-Rabi’i, those “symbols of paganism,” which Egypt’s Salafi party has long planned to cover with wax.
Most recently, Bahrain’s “Sheikh of Sunni Sheikhs” and President of National Unity, Abd al-Latif al-Mahmoud, called on Egypt’s new president, Muhammad Morsi, to “destroy the Pyramids and accomplish what Amr bin al-As could not.”
Funny how some Islamics prefer to detonate culture, isn’t it?
It’s impossible to judge how significant remarks like these are. Is this Abd al-Latif al-Mahmoud some respected and infuential type or a bloke talking to himself?
Either way, if these savages do move to destroy the pyramids then the rest of us would be perfectly entitled to use military force against them.

They destroyed the Buddhas in Afghanistan a decade ago, and they’ve just destoyed Muslim shrines in Mali. Its what they do. It is not impossible that this will happen.
It would be a crime for the ages, and would destroy the Egyptian tourist industry utterly. Yet, there would be Egyptians who would welcome this.

Phantom, “They” are totally different in all cases. There is no question of the Egyptians destroying the pyramids.
In fact, there is little question of the current president or the MB doing anything significant at all without support from the strong liberal forces in the country.
Any unilateral moves they have tried to make ended in failure. They know they can achieve nothing without a coalition and will need to woo the secular liberal parties with many concessions even just to remain in power.
It’s either a coalition or a military coup, everyone in Egypt knows that and it’s time people elsewhere woke up to the fact.

The madmen responsible for destroying the statues in Afh were for the most part not from that country. Also, the vast majority of Egyptians of all political and religious factions are proud of the Pyramids (for whatever reason). Saying they – or even the majority of MB followers – want to blow up the Pyramids is like saying the majority of US conservatives want to blow up government buildings or that “Its what they do”.
Some would welcome it, same in Egypt.

I completely agree Mahons. It was inevitable, and is perhaps a reflection of the limits to, and waning of Western power.
Using military power to stop them would yield no real benefit, and I am quite sure there are many Egyptians who are as full of foreboding re their nation’s future as we are.
But the die is now cast: let them get on with it.

Oh, I don’t know. Using military power propped up Egyptian and other dictators in the past and it certainly benefitted somebody you will be familiar with.
The very first church on record sits in Istanbul – it became a mosque before it became the museum that it is today. For centuries, this church survived in Turkey. I visited it last year and my guide was a Muslim from Istanbul. After it was a church, it was a working mosque. Muslims used the church but they did not destroy the church – they covered up the Christian symbols.
So what’s with this virulent group of muslim extremists? barbaric, cruel -seeking only to kill, maim, destroy, enslave?
The Muslim Brotherhood, the Taliban etc – we live in very dangerous times.

What’s inevitable is the eventual collapse of Western civilization if liberal progressives continue to dominate the culture. Here’s a just one example from Britain.
A vast area, the northern half of Mali, along with a load American military hardware, is now in the hands islamic nutters courtesy of our governments.
David- excuse me, but if Arab Spring comes to my town I will be very impressed since it would be necessarily spearheaded by a neighbor who is an engineer and the guy who runs the counter at the Mobil Gas station down the street. They are nice guys and hardly revolutionaries. What course of action do you seriously suggest would have prevented the Arab Spring in Arab countries?

The West is no longer in a position to impose its will on the rest of the world. Those days have past.
Guerilla/urban warfare means that you never know who your enemy is or who the next victims will be.
Where I agree with you is that the Liberal progressives would not countenance a return to dictatorships ruling on behalf of western interests. I could live with that, but Pandora’s Box has been well and truly opened and our potential enemies are now living amongst us. So the liberals have scored there too.
They will insist that “all cultures and faiths are of equal value, and therefore all will deserve Noel’s famed “human rights” and equal treatment under the law…

The pyramids are one of the World Heritage sites, the UN would send in the armed white hats if they thought the threat was serious.
