ON THE BEAT…
By David Vance On July 18th, 2012Bit of an update for you on the story I posted yesterday concerning the elderly couple whose bodies lay buried in their car in a mud filled tunnel in Beaminster in Devon. Turns out the Police were coping with a “busy weekend” because of the rain and so just didn’t have the time to check to see if any dead people were lying in cars in tunnels.
Yip – that sounds about right. Modern British policing priorities.

No truth then that the Police response is to charge the couple with illegal parking, not being in control of their vehicle, having four defective tyres (ie burst) having a dirty windscreen (fine £1000), a dirty number plate (fine £1000) and being in no fit condition to drive ie dead (fine and points).
I see they towed the flattened crushed car away…probably to a garage to perform an MOT. When the wreck fails they’ll be charged with that too – which invalidates their insurance – so another new charge…..
Then there’s the storage fee £150 per day until they produce new MOT and insurance to collect it. The war on the motorist is over? Roght…that’ll be another u turn.
Bring back Thatcher.
Dogisnotsogreat,
That several hundreds of tons of mud and rock fell on the car, it is hardly surprising the police didn’t get shovels out to look for any trapped people or vehicles, especially on a road that is rarely used by anyone other than a few locals.
While I am quite happy to jeer at the plod when they make a mess of things, this isn’t one of them. It is a very unfortunate ‘one in a milion’ accident, and even if the plod had been able to dig them out, I doubt they would have been alive – the car was flattened.
Your lack of discretion as to when to mock and jeer does not work in your favour.
