Now wasn’t that good advice, all those years ago when Norman Tebbitt told Britain to, – ‘Get on your bike’.
As proof that ‘unintended consequences’ are invariably total disasters, this must surely be the exception that proves the rule.
Norman has it right on more than bike-riding. His comments upon the way in which the Tory Party’s managers have grabbed and centralised power from the old constituencies is yet more proof that the Tories have changed beyond recognition, and changed for the worse.
Do you think Federer let Murray win the tennis?
I do.
Bernard,
I have suspicions on that one. Federer played as though the sooner it was over the better. Likewise for Jokavich(?).
Not that Murray didn’t deserve a win of some sort, he might not be the most likeable of fellas, but he can certainly play a good game on occasion.
Having tennis as an Olympic sport is pretty much a mockery anyway, it reduces it to ‘just another match on the already full pro calendar’ and hardly embraces the Olympic principle.
I saw today that table tennis was also an Olympic sport, – now that does make a mockery of the very word ‘sport’. How long before Subutteo and Shove-Hapenny join the throng?
I like red bananas, but most stores don’t carry them.
GB third for medals hm, wonder how many of those medal winners are actually “english” lol
I have been musing over the wonders of nature these last few days..
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
” How long before Subutteo and Shove-Hapenny join the throng?”
As long as you have to wear bikinis and look reasonably fit, why not?
Die Koelner Bierhalle a giant, German style beer hall, opens in Brooklyn today.
See you there.
Phantom,
Will you be working on your much anticipated political choice versus patriotism thread,
at the same time, or just discussing the scarcity of red bananas with Hans??
I don’t recall saying that I was going to write on that.
That is one very large subject.
“That is one very large subject.”
That’s exactly what you said last time..
Then I think Troll threw a Spaniard in the works and you started throwing bananas at each other.
Yes, you did.
I have been to Der Schwarze Kölner by the same owners a few times and it is pretty good.
I wasn’t going to write about that.
I was going to write about how the NRA was an extremist organization. Which of course it is.
” Political choice vs patriotism “- that’s a debate that wouldn’t even make sense to the Paulies.
Phantom,
No,
we were discussing big government and how modern political parties specifically Democrats and Republicans, make it impossible to do other than toe the party line, or else you’re regarded as unpatriotic.
Which means the bigger issues about the size and influence of federal government never gets addressed.
Or maybe it was the other Phantom?
I don’t remember saying that I was going to write about that, certainly not as a fresh post.
I’ve spoken on how the Tea Party is a confused mishmosh on the ” size of government” matter, but that’s hardly an original thought.
“GB third for medals hm, wonder how many of those medal winners are actually “english” lol”
Well none are really because they’re British, but since it amuses:
Granted it’s a touch out of date because it doesn’t include the track cycling medals from last night (two English Golds, one English Silver and one Jock Gold) but that’s about where we are.
LOL ROFLMAO
Im sure your very proud of yourself (and if youve time them medal winners too lol)
Mohamed Farah, gold medal winner for GB
As someone was saying, the medals are British. Sir Chris Hoy should know, since he’s bagged enough of them.
And as if anyone needs any reminding of the unbound potential for politics to always stink out the room:
Charles Bliss -
Are you saying that Mo Farah is not British?
Hi Ernesto – true enough, but did you see his grim-faced mother at those matches; ‘strewth, talk about frightening the horses…
I recognise the importance of the Olympics but when Eastenders gets bumped from its usual schedual then it becomes too much for me.
The Olympics are expanding into sports which are none of their business. Any sport for which the Olympics are not the peak should be purely for non-professionals (like boxing) or not featured at all. These include tennis and football.
For cycling, the Olympics should simply be the World Championships of that given year, where rainbow jerseys of thhe world champion are awarded with the gold medal.
As for table tennis, at the level played by the top players, it is certainly worthy of inclusion – a vigorous sport easily belittled by those not aware of its demands.
I was going to say exactly the same thing. With the tennis majors there’s no point in an Olympic event. As for the football, at the Olympics it’s completely irrelevent. I’m a football fan and I haven’t bothered with a minute of it.
Possibly, though sporting politics would get in the way. What I’d like to see are the rainbow jerseys worn at the Olympics.
I largely agree with you two for once!
The Olympics is way too big and it is overstepped its proper mandate.
Do one week of track and field, boxing. wrestling, gymnastics and swimming every four years. Nothing wrong with that.
How are Ireland doing? I couldn’t see them on the telegraph’s medals table. I didn’t scroll all the way down the table though as my finger got cramp.
The Summer Olympics is too big but they have stopped adding sports willy-nilly in the last couple of decades- it is now incredibly difficult for new sports to get in.
Rugby 7s and Golf have been added for 2016- replacing Baseball and Softball which were dropped in 2008. But sports like Squash and Karate are desperate to get in but the IOC won’t allow them unless something is got rid of.
Phantom- how does a German style beer hall differ from, for example, a British style pub?
“Do you think Federer let Murray win the tennis?”
Not a chance. Had he won, Federer would have had a career golden slam, one of the very few things he has not achieved in tennis. When you’ve won as much as he has, those kinds of records are the things that make you bother to even show up. And since it only comes round every 4 years it is pretty unlikely he will get a second crack at it now.
That’s because the Olympics is a corporate body. It’s what corporations do – attempting to take over everything.

Is that good or bad? I say bad because I visit this site for argument and also because Phantom is usually wrong and disagreeable. Definition – a disagreeable person is a person who disagrees with me.
In this instance, there is something wrong with the Olympics at the moment and most of us can feel it. Tennis and football should be dropped or made closed to professionals and other events should be allowed in.
Julio,do you hate the Irish? If so why?
Ross
My mental image of a classic British pub is a room or few rooms with comfortable seats, a few dartboards, and a decent selection of British beers and ales , Guinness, and of course Scotch. I like them in the uncrowded hours. My perfect pub soes not have to serve food, but of it does, it will be fish and chips, burgers, a soup.
A German beer hall in my experience will have plain wood seats and tables, on which you will drink your half or full liter glass of mostly German beer. Walls are plain wood, ceilings tend to be high. I don’t think that a lot of them serve strong spirits at all. Food is wursts or other simple Gemanic fare. If space allows, the German beer hall will ideally extend into a beer garden, where customers can imagine they’re in the woods.
Speaking of pubs, has anyone any idea on whether or not Mahons will make it to Belfast for next week’s summit?
Also, as far as I can tell, only myself, Paul McM, David and Peter have said they will definitely be there. Anyone else?
its official, the irish are good at fighting and riding.
Hate’s a pretty strong word Martin. Why would you make an assumption like that? Because of one or two gently mocking posts that I’ve made?
Sitting in Maddens with Paul McMahon, enjoying the music and pints
Both of us lookin’ forward to next Thursday:-)
