UNIONISM DECAYED – UPDATE!
By ATWadmin On January 19th, 2008Just to say that over the past week, the front cover design for my forthcoming book has been signed off, and in the next few weeks, all things should move to final stage. It’s a fascinating process I’ve been going through and it seems odd to be discussing things like what the "About the Author" section should say about me. (I bet ATW readers could come up with some choice ideas!!)
My plan is to have the book for sale by April – ten years on from the Good Friday Agreement.
Everything in it is written in my normal style – and it is an intensely personal 10 year journey for me, which I hope will make an entertaining and sometimes amusing read for you. However the book has a theme way beyond these shores – it describes what happens when the words of Sir Edmund Burke are ignored. Mmm..but which words were they, you may wonder? You’ll find out on the back of my book, coming soon..

Any chance of Radio 4 doing your book for their book at bedtime slot? (I like to hear a book being read)
No signings lined up????
All to come Typhoo – there’s so much work involved but I am out to make it a success.
Once it is out, the ATW book will then folow down the pipeline. It’s already written.
Which means…I need to start work on book number three. And I have an idea.
"And I have an idea"
I’ll bite. Whats the idea??
David,
Are you sure about launching it around the 10th anniversary of the agreement. I suspect there will be a lot of celebration around that date. Expect the Clintons, Blair, Bono and many more to show up for the festivities. I think the role of a "ghost to trouble joy" would appeal to you but there is a danger of drowning in the bonhomie.
In any event I look forward to reading it.
The demise of Great Britain, as part of the grand political project.
"The demise of Great Britain, as part of the grand political project."
O I’d like that. A bit like Northern Ireland’s very own Mark Steyn!!
Best compliment of the day! I see things very like Steyn and he amuses me as much as he educates me.
David: Avoid having it come out April 1st at all costs. Good luck and I look foward to reading it.
David – you are better than Steyn. Don’t compare yourself to that man. He’s awful
"I suspect there will be a lot of celebration around that date. Expect the Clintons, Blair, Bono and many more to show up for the festivities."
Wow, David’s book must be really popular! Although if they try and blag free copies tell them where to go.
I assume it is Edmund Burkes words about "for evil to prosper, all it needs is for good people to do nothing."
Seems very appropriate.
LOL Ross
David
You missed an opportunity. The design for your front cover would have been a great subject for a thread.
I’m looking forward to reading it.
Billy,
Good suggestion, but no.
David
The only other ones I can think of would be the one about good men standing together or the one about only one law.
I’ll find out in April I guess.
David, you once mentioned you’d been a friend of Conor Cruise O’Brien. Did you ever think of asking him to write a foreword for the book perhaps? He does that kind of thing (did a good one for some of Martin Dillon’s books on NI, I remember). Whatever about the Cruiser, he is a loyal friend.
Your remark about Burke reminded me of this, as CCoB wrote a biography of Burke not too long ago.
Great events in Irish history
April 1914 – Ulster Unionists land guns at Larne
April 1916 – Easter Rising in Dublin
April 1998 – Good Friday Agreeement signed
April 2008 – Unionism Decayed published!
Noel,
Yes, I had thought of Conor but decided that I would rather stand on my own words and let those who read them judge me.
I love your chronology btw – but modesty forbids agreement. I suppose I will be no more than a footnote but at least one tried to be honourable to the very end.
Heres my shot at Burkes quote.
"The wise determine from the gravity of the case; the irritable, from sensibility to oppression; the high minded, from disdain and indignation at abusive power in unworthy hands."
Has to be, or "our ptience will achieve more than our force."
One of those two.;-)
Good quotes Typhoo – but nope, it’s not those!!! I dug deep to get what I wanted.
David
"No one could make a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little. "
??
Oi DAVID !!!
Do I have to guess again?
Alas, YES!!
lol. Aileen is declared the winner!!
Is that yes to the quote or guess again??
Sorry badly worded by me. Alas Aileen has not got the quote I have selected!!
