LOLITA COMBI
By ATWadmin On February 1st, 2008Did you see that high street retail chain Woolworths has been forced to wthdraw an item of bedroom furniture for young girls with the brand name Lolita following complaints from parents? A parenting website said it was in "unbelievably bad taste" to give the bed the same name as a novel about a sexually precocious young girl. Woolworths said the £395 Lolita Midsleeper Combi was withdrawn when the matter was brought to its attention. I just wonder how it even got to be a stocked line – did no-one spot the problem?

They’ll probably discontinue The Jack the Ripper Knife Set as well then.
I’m not sure what the more depressing explanation for this is- that retail bosses see nothing wrong with overt sexualisation of young girls or that retail bosses are so poorly read that the name ‘Lolita’ didn’t ring a bell.
and the Hillary Clinton fright mask!
Why do beds need to have "names"?
I mean, beds are beds.
It’s the product range that has a name not the individual beds I’d have thought.
Ryanair have just had to pull an ad due to sexual overtones – Schoolgirl photo. The ASA said they went too far. Below is link to Ryanair response to the photo, which is uncluded

What about Playboy stuff that you see in Boots etc.
How do I add a hyperlink ?
Campbell, you type as follows, but where I am putting [ and ], replace them with the "less than" and "greater than" symbols (the ones above your comma and full stop keys):
[a href="***"]@@@[/a]
- where *** is the url of the link, and @@@ is the piece of text that you click on, to get there, if that makes sense.
THANKS TOM
This is insane. As Ross says, surely the idiots who "named" this bed Lolita cannot have been unaware of the connotations of the word? I’ve never read the book or seen the film, but everyone knows the broad association.
Given that the young girls (who would be sleeping therein) would not be paying for the beds themselves, one can only assume that this brand name was aimed at the sort of pig-ignorant parents who would actually contemplate buying a bed with such a brand name, for their own daughter. Sadly, it seems there are such parents about.
David,
I’ve been conducting what seems to me to be a one-man campaign against Playboy merchandise.
Seems that the geriatric, Viagra-fuelled owner of the brand is intent on targeting little girls. Everywhere I look I see Playboy merchandise (including bed linen) for kiddies.
I can’t believe that mothers buy this crap. Don’t they KNOW? Seems to me we’re raising a generation of sex slaves without anyone’s by-your-leave. It ain’t right.
Course it’s down to the insidious rise of the "brand". Tell a prole that Playboy™ is somehow cool and he or she will be eating out of your hand.
Dawkins
Pretty true. But it’s not just the proles.
BTW His daughter runs the Empire now. She’s one of these unclassy bints who think porn crap is empowering. Read Ariel Levy’s book on the whole industry.
Alison,
Scary. But ask yourself: could a daughter of Hefner be anything but warped?
I’ll definitely look up Levy. Thanks for the heads-up!
I kinda agree but part of me wonders about names and words being out of bounds. For most names there is a bad example.
Does anyone in Germany name their bouncing chuckly baby boy Adolf anymore.
Are there any Jezebels about?
Come on everyone, do you not think you are slightly overreacting a bit here? It’s a bed for heavens sake. Will this bed make the child that sleeps in it more sexually active? Does it mean that the parents who buy it are closet pedophiles? Or are the manufacturers concealing a hidden history of child abuse? This is a non-story. People don’t seem to know why they are offended by this, just a sense that they should be.
When one of the people complaining – Tom Tyler – says "I’ve never read the book or seen the film, but everyone knows the broad association" you realise that those objecting are probably the same people who didn’t watch but still got offended by the very thought of Channel 4′s ‘Brass Eye’ mockumentary on pedophilia a few years back. Calm down people.
Aileen
I’m sure there are plenty of Jezebels about
Colm
On one flight to Belfast when they were doing the safety stuff , the voice introdced the cabin crew, including "Jezabel". Her face was a picture ;o)
Aileen
I bet she was a member of the Mile high club
Another example of political correctness taken to the extreme. It’s only a name, people.Do you think that if they buy their child the bed, she will start having sex with her father in it.
