1733 – First recorded sighting of a UFO anywhere in the world. A man in Dorset, in the west of England, reports seeing a polished silver disc in the sky.

1941 – Britain, Australia and the United States of America declare war on Japan following the surprise attack on the American Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii, the day before.

1980 – John Lennon is killed by an obsessed fan in New York City. The British star, formerly of The Beatles, had his message of peace shattered on December 8, 1980, when he was shot outside his apartment building near Central Park. He died on the way to the hospital. His assailant, Mark David Chapman, was convicted of murder and sent to jail. Bereaved fans kept vigil in front of the entrance to Lennon’s home for an entire week.

1981 – Arthur Scargill heavily defeats Joe Gormley and becomes the next President of the National Union of Mineworkers.

1987 – US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev sign the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty in Washington DC. It’s the first nuclear arms reduction agreement either country has signed.

1991 – The official end of the Soviet Union (USSR) when three of the major republics – Russia, Ukraine and Belarus – unite to form a Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
