Lets have three cheers for Abba and all their fine songs.

Cheers

  1. Is it Friday today? – no it isn’t!

What is it with Yankees that you just cannot obey a simple request that music videos are for FRIDAYS! Is it to prove that ‘no-one ain’t gonna tell me what to do!’ – or do you just feel that you know better?

Troll set the trend, followed by you and now Patty, so it isn’t down to anythng poltical is it?

Incidentally I notice that your own blog doesn’t even have comments or postings, let alone music videos, – is it a problem with bandwidth affordability, or what?

  2. I am taking extraordinary measures solely to mitigate the effect of the male bondage image that Patty defaced the site with.

I may delete this video later today, once someone else posts a couple of new ones.

I have posted far fewer videos of all the video posters by far, and I ususlly post them for a reason rather than just throwing them up randomly. And I don’t take orders from Pete Moore either.

Bay Ridge Blog may come back. Thanks for asking.

  3. Ernest — You are such a crank.

  4. Its unbelievable.

Some people look for a reason to be unhappy.

  5. Phantom -

DV decided that Friday night, and Friday night alone, is Music Night.

  6. I didn’t see that.

  7. Music has been posted here on practically every weekday in the past month alone.

  8. I’ve never posted a music video here myself so perhaps I am overdue. Ernest is probably lashing out because he can’t relate to this modern music. Perhaps i’ll find some Medieval lute music video he can relive his youth.

  9. All -

David Vance clearly said that he doesn’t want music posted other than on Friday nights. I remember it. That’s all you need to know.

Friday night, and Friday night only, is Music Night.

  10. Well, as Phantom said ‘Anything to get that ugly picture and boring post out of sight!

Incidentally, I’m quite happy to pull a chain or two if gets you folks out of your self-pitying ruts.

Ah! – poor Petr! – had to have his twopennorth! – Rather a crank than a w**k, I say!

When Abba first appeared on the pop scene it was aimed at teens, and early teens at that, and you still ‘relate’ to it? you would probably do better to post a few nursery rhymes, you would probably get a wider audience.

If nothing else my prank, shows just how addicted we all are to ATW

  11. Are ALL the male commentators on ATW menopausal?

  12. It seems those who liked the gay porn photo are most annoyed about this Abba video. They didn’t get their knickers in knots about other non-Friday music! :)

  13. Are ALL the male commentators on ATW menopausal?

    LOL

  14. Snap Poll

    Abba video here?

Leave it up or pull it down?

Polls close at 5pm Belfast time.

  15. We really must stop getting annoyed with each other. It’s getting to resemble that tv show
    “Alias Tiffs and Moans”
except that all the supporting cast have fallen out with each other..

  16. I thought “Friday” = “the weekend.” ….must be the Californian in me.

  17. If I were to characterize ATW writers and commenters on an average day, I would say really, really angry.

… I’m not Freud but frustration seems to be a possible diagnosis.

  18. I wouldn’t disagree with that completely but I’d say more paranoid than angry. Some commenters certainly need to get laid…

  19. I am just so delighted that Phantom has seen the light and become an ABBA fan :)

  20. When Abba first appeared on the pop scene it was aimed at teens, and early teens at that, and you still ‘relate’ to it? you would probably do better to post a few nursery rhymes, you would probably get a wider audience.

Has Ernest inadvertently insulted David? :)

  21. Phantom – leave it up, it was a one of deviation from the Dear Leader’s instructions so i doubt he’ll mind overly.

  22. 21 responses to date.

    Not bad for a throwaway.

  23. Do you guys ever do any work. LOL. (Minus the retired ones.)

  24. Some of us are superb multi taskers.

  25. “I wouldn’t disagree with that completely but I’d say more paranoid than angry. Some commenters certainly need to get laid… spayed….

    :)

  26. Agie – lol

  27. I think it’s one of Phantom’s guilty pleasures!

    Dave

I am having a day off (winding down to what I hope will be my retirement in June :) )

on the list for then is Fifty Shades of Grey (mentioned on another thread) as I seem to be one of the few people not to have read it.

  28. Dave – I don’t smoke so I view ATW as a smoking break during work, just less healthy.

  29. Aileen

I didn’t know that. Happy almost retirement!

  30. “Dave – I don’t smoke so I view ATW as a smoking break during work, just less healthy.”

You mean ATW is a less pleasurable way of contracting cancer?

  31. Agit*ed – A mental health issue.

  32. It must be said that the permanently angry here are exclusively from the far right wing of the political and economic house – not to be confused with normal, thinking conservatives.

There is none of playfulness that most here seem to like, and a too-quick going for the jugular, to say things that most would never think of saying.

I had always found the leftists to be the nasty ones, especially in the politically monochrome university environment, and during the GW Bush years. But in this microclimate, the anger is nearly always right wing. One gets the sense that they’ve lost all the political fights, in America, Britain, Europe. They are wild with hatred about the ” new world ” that they are forced to live in, one in which they’re going to be on the losing team for a long time to come, a world where they’re not in charge anymore.

They’ve always lived with an understanding that the people were with them. Now, it is sinking in that the people aren’t with them at all. Everyone’s a traitor, a villain, a bum, except them. I suspect that’s where a lot of this universal anger is coming from.

  33. “They’ve alwsys lived with an understanding that the people were with them. Now, it is sinking in that the people aren’t with them at all. Everyone’s a traitor, a villain, a bum, except them. I suspsect that’s where some of this universal anger is coming from.

Or it could be an irrational fear of dictionaries?

  34. One step ahead of you, bro.

I could write a dictionary, and I well know how to use one.

A first draft is just that.

  35. Just pulling your leg Phantom.
    If you factor in personal circumstances, age, ego, education, the need to be always right,fear of change, social differences, cultural differences and haemmorhoids;
    hostility becomes inevitable.

  36. I think its great to be corrected when one is wrong. Who wants go through life being wrong?

In real life, there’s a lot of correction, in healthy families, in real friendships.

At work, we have very blunt conversations, where we demand criticism and will instantly change course if the facts lead us there.

When was the last time someone here changed their opinion on anything?

  37. Hah!

    Look at yourself.

  38. “When was the last time someone here changed their opinion on anything?”

I think some do. I think some modify their opinions. I think some people ignore stuff that contradicts long held views. I think some fancy that their learning is more valid than another’s experience. I think some lack humour and take themselves too seriously. I think at times there is evidence of cultural incomprehension.

  39. I haven’t seen a significant change of opinion since Madradin Ruad, when we had a discussion on an Irish history matter. All props to him, he was very public in admitting that his understanding was incorrect.

In real life, you hear people conceding a point all the time. Blogs for some reason inhibit this most necessary and civil of abilities. The matter is at its worse in things like Global Warming and in Economic Matters. There, opinion is beyond entrenched and no one ever concedes a millimeter. One gets the opinion that contradictory evidence is often not considered, maybe never even read in some cases, when in fact it should be welcomed, seized upon, devoured.

  40. Teach us, Phantom.

What many matters have you changed your mind about?

  41. I’ve changed my mind on unquestioning US support for Israel. I think that we should take a very hard look at a burden that is diplomatically unhelpful and which we can no longer afford.

I think that US aid to both Israel and Egypt should be cut significantly.

  42. I used to think Pete wasn’t a jackass. I changed my mind.

  43. All I ask is that one follow the evidence!

  44. “I haven’t seen a significant change of opinion since Madradin Ruad, when we had a discussion on an Irish history matter. All props to him, he was very public in admitting that his understanding was incorrect.”

    You mean this stuff? http://www.atangledweb.org/?p=625

It could just be that the kind of people attracted to ATW have/are changed/ing.
I like the fact that mairin2 and Patty etc feel that they can post here. I think some blokes are quite vicious and ungentlemanly towards them at times. That is a shame. I think if we used phrases like,
“that may be your perception, but have you considered…”
    or,
“WHY do you think that, because it seems to me illogical..”
There are lots of ways we can disagree or elicit a person’s reasons for making a statement without being nasty.
For example you pulled me up about Petr some weeks ago. But I was genuinely annoyed that he was throwing out one liners without clarification or substantiation. Now I quite like Petr. He has travelled, so have I. He has acted on his ideals. So have I -probably much more so, he is obviously well educated, I am not.
So it is pleasing that Petr is actually saying more in his comments than before.

  45. Petr is a lot more balanced than any of the extreme right wingers here.

So much so that his evolution out of support of communism is certain.

I have all confidence in him.

  46. Mahons -

I might have changed, but you’ve always been a jackass.

  47. Phantom -

So Ron Paul was right all along there.

If you can’t afford any more welfare for Israel, you can’t afford anything. Check out the aid to Israel against the fed’s social programmes. It’s miniscule.

  48. “Petr is a lot more balanced than any of the extreme right wingers here.”

In all seriousness I don’t think you would know that from his comments, because he didn’t actually SAY much..

  49. Pete – You did change, you became Pete O’Moore with an Irish passport to protect yourself from Islamic terrorists who, according to your views, aren’t actually responsible for terrorism, although also according to your other views, are responsible.

    Slainte!

  50. Pete

Don’t go there. Ron Paul has a zero percent batting average on most things. Including the hyperinflation that he always predicted and which never seems to arrive.

    Agit

Petr said that he believes in communism and that he opposes interventions by world powers in Syria. What else should he say?

    mahons

I am sure that Pete is just as loyal to Ireland as he is to Britain.

  51. Phantom’s ABBA conversion remains the greatest change of mind in ATW history ;)

  52. You are the best!

And I was very sincere in this.

  53. “Agit

Petr said that he believes in communism and that he opposes interventions by world powers in Syria. What else should he say?”

So if you admire his brevity so, how comes you say so much more?

  54. I only say that he has said things.

Things have at times been 100 pct wrong, but he has expressed opinions.

  55. “What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate..”
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2f-MZ2HRHQ

What I was getting at Phantom, is that you stick up for and defend Petr’s brevity of speech.
What Agit8ed calls one liners and throwaway slogans.
Now I admire your loyalty. With a friend like you why, we could conquer the world together! Righting all kinds of wrongs…

But you yourself could hardly be described as monosyllabic. You put a lot of thought and effort into your posts.
    The complete OPPOSITE of Petr.
Is this just an example of the old saying that “Opposites attract”?

  56. Hi fm Brooklyn Nets bball game

  57. Ho Ho!
    Phantom.
I like the idea of America.
We Brits owe the USA big time, but you can still learn from the best of the British.

  58. I agree

Yitzak perlman. Played the anthem tonight

    Tale that allan

  59. Back in 1971 down in Eilat, Israel a concert was held in the cinema with Yehuda Menuin as the star performer.
As a Christian Goy and an intellectual/cultural ignoramus it was my great honour to be there.
    I still feel that.

  60. Cheers

  61. //Back in 1971 down in Eilat, Israel a concert was held in //

I heard of another fine concert there once….

It was in the Gulf of Aqaba
I met some Paddies and we had a fleadh
Danced through the streets of Eilat town
    Sang “Sean South Of Garryowen”
    I was travelling I don’t know
You pack your gear get up and go
Leave the rest for another bout
I could damn well do with a Pint of Stout

  62. Here it is – real music at last. Just listen:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvbHs8NvGgM

  63. Noel,
Thanks to Paul McMahons I am now a fan of Christy Moore.
And despite my frequent and cruel stabs at your persona, I recognise you as a poet and a lover of literature.
    So.
As I told you at the age of 24 I worked with genuine Paddy “earth movers” on the Isle of Grain.
Helping dig out and straighten what the mechanical monsters with their steel teeth couldn’t see to do.

Those guys knew how much I was struggling just to breathe, and in their own way as much as they knew how, they tried to help.
Which is probably why at the end of the day, I have always held in my heart an affection for the Irish.

  64. Beeswing – Christy Moore

    I LOVE this.

  65. Now I’m listening to Christy instead of going to bed. Would be hard to hear a better version of Sweet Thames Flow Softly mind. Lovely backing vocals by Sinéad O’Connor and Neil MacColl.

  66. Petr,
I think it was Paul McMahons who shared this with me.
    I honestly can’t remember.
    But it is lovely.
    Just let me tell you,
whilst there is within me something that responds, that doesn’t mean I would swallow everything else.

    I won’t.
I will respect and appreciate the soul of it, but as an Englishman I am sure that many an Irishman would understand why Oliver Cromwell took his heart and his being in his hands and said “this Divine Right of Kings cannot go on.”

  67. Petr,
I really need to go to sleep.
I have a tree to saw up tomorrow.
You know, I would love to sit with my wife and a bunch of bleddy Irishman singing their hearts out.
It;s a funny thing how the Irish capture the heart of the man.

  68. Just let me tell you,
whilst there is within me something that responds, that doesn’t mean I would swallow everything else.

    Sure. I didn’t think otherwise.

    Good night, Agit.

  69. Agit

This is a present for you. From last night’s Brooklyn Nets NBA game, the national anthem as performed by Itzhak Perlman. It was a most pleasant surprise to see him there.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRL2yjrySmA

  70. Thanks Phantom,
    Beautiful.

  71. There’s got to be some conspiracy behind his presence at that game. If we wait a short while, Allan will tell us what it is ;)

  72. Lol Colm.
