GAY ADOPTION?

By David Vance On February 15th, 2013

I think this guy is speaking common sense, don’t you?

Welsh Secretary David Jones came under fire today after claiming in a TV interview that gay couples ‘clearly’ could not provide a ‘warm and safe environment’ to raise children. The Tory MP, who voted against the Government’s plans to introduce gay marriage in the Commons last week, made his remarks to ITV Wales’s Face To Face programme.  Shadow Commons leader Angela Eagle called 60-year-old Mr Jones ‘deluded’ and said she was astonished that a member of the Cabinet in the 21st century could say such a thing.Mr Jones said: ‘I regard marriage as an institution that has developed over many centuries, essentially for the provision of a warm and safe environment for the upbringing of children, which is clearly something that two same-sex partners can’t do.’Which is not to say that I’m in any sense opposed to stable and committed same-sex partnerships.’

Obviously he’s wrong, as if it was so clear there wouldn’t be so many informed people around who disagree.

Whether a person is at one or at odds with himself, and his partner, and whether or not he knows how to treat children and give them support and encouragement – these are the things that count, not who goes to bed with whom.

  2. //the provision of a warm and safe environment for the upbringing of children, which is clearly something that two same-sex partners can’t do//

BTW, I wonder will all the great people who were brought up by several people of the same sex feel tempted to tell this fool to shut up?

  3. Apart from the fact that he is wrong , he also didn’t follow through on the implications of his own argument. He also said that he did not want to prevent gay couples adopting children which is rather strange considering he believes they can’t offer a ‘safe and warm’ environment for rearing children.

  4. I know three same-sex couples raising adopted children, the ones nobody else wanted to parent, and they all provide caring, loving, responsible environments for their sons and daughters.

You have to be purposely blind and willfully pig-ignorant to categorically label all gay people as unfit to parent adopted children. It would be equally stupid to consider all straight couples as ideal parents when the front pages of newspaper sadly tell you otherwise on a nearly daily basis.

Individuals and couples seeking to adopt, gay or straight, need to be judged on their particular merits and on what’s best for the particular children they’re seeking to raise. Nothing else.

Considering how many children, especially those of color or with special needs, reside in a state of revolving and impermanent foster care homes in my country, I think it’s an absolutely cruelty to these poor kids that a potential permanent home with loving parents would be denied merely due to this type of pointless and ugly discrimination.

  5. Excellently put Daphne. A far greater demonstration of common sense than this politician that David so admires.

  6. No matter how the politicians may seek to normalise gay parenting, it isn’t natural and is contrary to nature. Homosexuality, on the other hand, is natural but not normal.

  7. Allan

In nature many parents will instinctively kill and/or eat their young. Sometimes the ‘unnatural’ is more humane than the natural.

  8. Thank you, Colm. I get a little worked up on this issue because it seems certain types of people care more about promoting their tight-minded personal beliefs rather than solving the larger problem these abandoned, abused and damaged children face – which is a childhood filled with no permanent home or committed, loving adults.

Their blinkered attitude strikes me as cutting one’s nose off to spite their face, the kids be damned.

  9. Allan, homosexuals have been creating and raising children since before written history was ever recorded. It is neither unnatural or exceptional, except to the modern, religious fundamentalist mindset.

  10. ‘I think this guy is speaking common sense, don’t you?’

    In a word – no.

  11. I also have gay friends who have adopted and raised wonderful children (who had been given up by heterosexuals mind you).

So no, David Jones is not speaking common sense. He is speaking foolishly at best.

  12. Which is not to say that I’m in any sense opposed to stable and committed same-sex partnerships

Yeah, right. It’s reassuring to see that homophobia is alive and well in the Tory party in 2013.

  13. As far as I am concerned, all other things being equal a child is better off being brought up by a live in man and woman as they then get the best chance to forge strong bonds that span (well nearly) all genders.

However all other things are rarely equal and I see no reason whatsoever to consider that a gay couple cannot provide a warm and safe environment to bring up children.

It is one of those pronouncements that can be easily disproved as there are many counterexamples.

  14. Yes

homosexuals have been CREATING and raising children….ha ha ha

  15. homosexuals have been creating and raising children since before written history was ever recorded

Daphne – I don’t know of any instance where a gay man and a lesbian got together to conceive a child and raise him/her. When are in the street next time, you will see all the people that you can see, and perhaps one may have been conceived and/or raised in the manner in which you describe – which is not the norm and not normal.

At 11.38, Colm may have a point: Roheim tells us of “the custom of raping Aboriginal children, eating every second child and making the older children also eat them. Mothers regularly forced their children to eat their newborn siblings in the belief that the strength of the first child would be doubled by such a procedure. Sometimes the fetus would be pulled out by the head, roasted and eaten by the mother and the children and sometimes a big boy would be killed by the father by being beaten on the head and given to the mother to eat”

  16. Allan

You certainly have a knack of digging up strange ‘facts’ don’t you ?

  17. Colm – you raised the matter so I provided some back-up for you. You wrote:

In nature many parents will instinctively kill and/or eat their young.

so I simply provided an example of the lesser sub-species of mankind doing exactly that. Do you consider the information in my post of 10.27am to be incorrect? if not, then it is fact and not ‘fact’.

  18. Totally agree with Dave and Mr Jones.

I haven’t even opened my Bible yet, but I do believe even natural common sense tells us that children are extremely interested in where they have come from. It’s a natural curiosity. Therefore, to grow up in a ‘family’ (however well-meaning) of 2 blokes, or 2 women, is going to be difficult. Surely a child will be confused knowing that at least one person in the parenting partnership has no biological link to the child?

Boring old “in this day and age” arguments from Angela Eagle add nothing to the debate. They argue as if time and place has some sort of bearing on eternal moral truths. I do not accept such arguments.

  19. Of course homosexuals have been creating children from before recorded history. Oscar Wilde created children. He didn’t do it on his own but neither do hetrosexual men.

  20. I assume Allan was raised by heterosexual parents which is a winning argument for homosexual adoption if I ever saw one.
