I THINK P. J. O’ROURKE NAILED THIS ONE

By Pete Moore On March 13th, 2013

“When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things to be bought and sold are legislators.”

December 2012: Euro Parliament moves to effectively ban e-cigarettes

December 2012: EU plans tougher tobacco health warnings

Now get this –

13 March 2012: Euro Parliament votes to subsidise tobacco farmers

Next will come the mega-health warnings followed by a multi-million euro anti-smoking campaign, paid for the sucker taxpayers who are forced to subsidise tobacco farmers in the first place and, always of course, more and more taxes.

Truly, government is insanity.

  1. O’Rourke is a smart guy.

The US plays the same double game – warning against tobacco ( good policy ), taxing tobacco in different ways than safe products ( good policy ) but also subsidizing tobacco farmers ( atrocious policy )

  2. O’Rourke. Pete O’Moore.

  3. Mahons spots the deliberate mistake. A signed portrait of Ron Paul is on its way.

  4. Thanks. O’Rourke has some good stuff over the years.

What they can’t control .. they ban.

  7. Giving blood is now on the ‘Hit list’ .. it’s worse than smoking.

And don’t sit down .. that’s also as bad as smoking.

At least the ‘Anti’ drones have a sense of humour.

  8. Harry

The EU says that ” Harry ” is the only approved spelling now.

    Hope you don’t mind.

  9. i wonder how long it will be before you have to stand outside in the wind and rain to have a beer ..

Or chew gum, or eat your fish & chips with the devil salt on, or drink your sugary fizzy pops, or eat chocolate bars .. the list will grow .. welcome to the world of social leprosy… welcome to the world of the dehumanised smoker, who by the way have adapted, now it’s someone elses turn.

What about fat people .. maybe they should be made to stand outside restaurants, pubs and cafes and such like.

The righteous use the same template, the same made up tractor stats for all their targets.

How long before sugar and salt and maybe chewing gum and all fizzy drinks and sweets are sold in ‘Plain packaging’ .. to protect the cheeeeldren.

  10. Irony time ..

Harri is the Finnish way of spelling ‘Harry’

Is Finland in the EU 😉

  11. That’s why Bloombergism must be nipped in the bud.

    It will never end.

  12. Bloomberg is one of the righteous.

And I agree, drones like that have no ‘cut-off’ point, they just move from one ‘Ban’ to the next ban.

Control freakery, now that should be banned.

Anyway, Bloomberg is in the right, and he has a multitude of tractor stats to prove it 😉

  13. If I am not so incorrect, the very first piece of legislation Hitler bought in.. he banned smoking in public places.

The Nazis stated they would be around for a thousand years .. they were not joking were they !

  14. Even the liberal NY Times criticized his soda ban in an editorial today!

  15. All this ‘Banning stuff’ .. I can only refer you back to this.

“We find that at present the human race is divided into one wise man, nine knaves, and ninety fools out of every hundred. That is, by an optimistic observer. The nine knaves assemble themselves under the banner of the most knavish among them, and become ‘politicians’; the wise man stands out, because he knows himself to be hopelessly outnumbered, and devotes himself to poetry, mathematics, or philosophy; while the ninety fools plod off under the banners of the nine villains, according to fancy, into the labyrinths of chicanery, malice and warfare. It is pleasant to have command, observes Sancho Panza, even over a flock of sheep, and that is why the politicians raise their banners. It is, moreover, the same thing for the sheep whatever the banner. If it is democracy, then the nine knaves will become members of parliament; if fascism, they will become party leaders; if communism, commissars. Nothing will be different, except the name. The fools will be still fools, the knaves still leaders, the results still exploitation. As for the wise man, his lot will be much the same under any ideology. Under democracy he will be encouraged to starve to death in a garret, under fascism he will be put in a concentration camp, under communism he will be liquidated.”

  16. Phantom.

Should not be too long before those beer drinkers and soda drinkers are joining the smokers out in the wind & rain.

I hope I live long enough to witness it.

  17. Some very sensible suggestions in your 5:22 Harri.
    Well done!

  18. Beer in moderation is good for you.

It is fundamentally different from smoking or fructose infested cokes.

  19. Drinking beer in the freezing cold wind and rain isn’t 😉

  20. Fructose is the same as Stavin, a natural plant sweetner.

Are they now saying that is ‘bad’ for you as well?

When are they going to get around to ban ‘banning’. And if they ever have a ‘crackdown’ on tin-foil hattery, I will be buggered, (Not literally) 🙂

  21. I’m sure you must know Pete, that these government diktats have absolutely nothing to do with the nation’s health.
If it were, then they would ban tobacco altogether and call it a class A drug.

I bought some Golden Virginia in Luxembourg last year and a 50gm pack cost £4.25p.
Back on the funny farm called the UK, the same pack cost over £14 at Tescos.
    The difference is all tax.

The government will say it’s about our health and use that excuse to rack-up the price at every opportunity.

Actions have consequences, and the inland revenue is now losing out as smuggling is becoming phenomenally lucrative.

  22. If you get the idiot governments to outlaw tobacco, the mafia will buy you a Rolls Royce.

Prohibition is a very bad idea.

    Drug warriors take note.

  23. Bernard

You really must stop talking so much common sense , you will have the righteous misguided drones fainting in droves 😉

  24. “Euro Parliament moves to effectively ban e-cigarettes”

I’m interested because I actually have one of these – but I notice that this is totally unsupported by the actual references given (which are also rather obviously partisan).

It proposes to regulate them not ban them. They’d just have to be authorised as pharmaceuticals in the same way that dozens of other nicotine containing products are.

I guess those are ‘effectively banned’ too even though you can get them without a prescription on any high street.

  25. Is there any hard evidence that these e-cigarettes are less harmful in terms of C and heart disease?

  26. Noel, there is some evidence but not that much that I’ve seen anyway. I don’t think they’ve been studied all that much yet.

But basically it seems that smoking is a proven risk while these things aren’t proven risks and there’s not much reason to suspect they will be as long as they’re made properly.

They’re surprisingly similar to a real cigarette too but not quite. I’m not even sure they really deliver any nicotine 🙂

  27. All this ‘Banning stuff’

    Harri

For the record, are you in favour of legalising drugs, or do you support the present blanket ban?

Prohibition never works .. and the current ‘war on drugs’ is working so well 😉

  29. It looks like your pets just might be joining all the drones out in the wind & rain ..

The righteous have started to target your pets now.

And I bet the wee lad never smoked a cigarette in his life.

  31. Harri

And ya a big chunk of the self proclaimed small govt types here are just fine with drugs prohibition and all the personal and social ruin that it causes, esp in other countries

  32. In Its current format, I don’t want a small government … I don’t wany any government.

To the un-street-wise, drugs are controlled in prisons, that’s why they get all the good shit.

  33. *want

  34. I don’t wany any government.

No, Harri, you do not want that.

You think you do but that is not in your interests at all.

  35. If Harri moves to Somalia his wish will come true 🙂

  36. Nearly anything is better than no government.

At best it would be rule by gangs.

Nasty brutish and short and all that.

With this shower in charge at the moment right across Europe, I am prepared to take my chances.
