SOCIALIST CALEDONIAN REPUBLIC

By David Vance On May 29th, 2013

Interesting to read that the Scottish Government (SNP) are interested in banning a few things, as is the socialist wont.

For starters, they want to ban pint glasses in the Highlands. Cheers to that.

Then, they want to ban people smoking in their cars.

And, of course, for good measure , come 2014, they want to stop being part of the UK.

What a MISERABLE bunch they are!

  1. Then, they want to ban people smoking in their cars.

    Or to quote the FULL headline in the article;

LIB DEM Jim Hume hopes to have legislation introduced making it illegal to light up in vehicles carrying kids under 16 years old.

Which is a bad idea because?

  2. Miserable bunch? Then I take it you don’t want them in the UK, right?

  3. Dave

I totally agree with such legislation.

My father was a wonderful man in many ways and there is part of me that feels sorry for must of humanity merely on the basis of not having known him. However……..

When I was growing up there was little spoken about passive smoking. He was a pipe smoker and he almost always lit up before any car journey, whilst waiting for the rest of us to get organised (not a strong family trait) and get in. I hated it just on the unpleasantness factor, I had no idea of any health concerns. I don’t think smokers realise just how unpleasant their smoke is to non smokers and his attitude was that we could wait outside the car – not so easy if you are wedged in the middle at the back. Not every child, especially those strapped in seats can exercise that option either.

I was an am against the current smoking ban, even though it makes my life much more pleasant. However children should be protected.

  4. There is a certain logic in banning pint glasses.
    1) It shows everybody that the Government’s in charge.
    2) If they introduced gill glasses, rounds would be cheaper so more Scots would go to the pub..

On the other hand banning smoking in cars will raise the price of kippers, destroying yet another cottage industry.
    And finally,
WHO will the Scots have to blame for their problems if they withdraw from the Union?

  5. Banning pint glasses is about as imbecilic as opposing efforts to protect young kids from second hand smoke.

If Scotland exits the UK, someone’s gonna have to pick up the tab borne by the English taxpayer.

  6. Smoking in cars with kids is a form of child abuse. The Scots are right to make it illegal.

  7. ” as opposing efforts to protect young kids from second hand smoke.”

I think the dangers of second hand smoke on children -or anybody- was only thoroughly researched in 2008..

  8. I recall sitting outside a Supervalue in Ireland in recent years and watching a father smoking away in his car with approximately five kids in it, windows rolled up while Mom was in doing the shopping.

You would not think people could be so stupid. But they can.

  9. Mahons,
perhaps he produced home smoked kippers for Supervalue?
    Enterprising.

  10. Watch some dumb cluck say that ” parents have the right to expose their children to poisonous smoke “

  11. “Watch some dumb cluck say that ” parents have the right to expose their children to poisonous smoke “
Ah, that would be the SubHuman Rights Legislation..

  12. Please say that someone.

    I beg you.

  13. Yes,
where’s the ATW advocates for freedom without limits when you need them?!

  14. Oh, and does this apply to babies in the womb? Should there be rights to clean air and nicotine free blood awarded to them?

  15. Aren’t the polls showing Scottish independence supporters around 30%? I don’t think they are leaving any time soon.

  16. I’ll make a prediction here. There will be no Scottish independence in the foreseeable future. It peaked when the movie Braveheart came out and its been falling ever since.

I do remember someone on here arguing against banning smoking in cars containing kids. There argument was the harmful effects of passive smoking are unproven. I can’t remember who it was for sure but I have my suspect. 🙂

  17. If the pro independence vote only gets 30 percent or anywhere near it, I might imagine that the matter is closed.

  18. Dave Alton –

“Which is a bad idea because?”

Because a motor is private property.

Because it’s nothing to do with the wellbeing of children.

Because next will be a ban inside the home.

Because there will always be a need for one more law to perfictify society.

Because the state never stops expanding power at the expense of society.

  19. Pete Moore

Because a motor is private property.
So I can murder people on private property then? What the hell has it being private property got to do with the wellbeing of the child.

Because it’s nothing to do with the wellbeing of children.

So smoking doesn’t harm then then?

Because next will be a ban inside the home.

Children don’t have a choice in breathing cigarette smoke so maybe there should be one.

Because there will always be a need for one more law to perfictify society.

  20. Dave Alton –

You can’t murder people on private property.

It’s not pertinent to anyone’s health, but that the state has no legitimate business telling us what we can do on our private property.

  21. Pete

How do you make out that you can’t murder someone on private property?

  22. Some studies even suggest that passive smoking is – volume for volume – more harmful than active smoking. Smoke directly from the cigarette is hot, and the heat binds the toxins in the smoke. When it cools down, the toxins are more readily released.

On a similar theme: a child was born, in Poland, two weeks ago with a blood alcohol level of 4.5 g – over 20 times the alcohol limit for driving. The mother had only half the level in her blood, as is usually the case with drunk births.
Fortunately, neither was driving at the time.

  23. Pete – You can’t murder someone on private property? ATW has had some wild foolishness put up in its day, but that is some fresh nonsense. Congratulations.

  24. Pete

Come meet me at my house 🙂

  25. The main point of David`s post is the banning of pint glasses. This is thin end of wedge stuff. Today Ullapool (beautiful village), tomorrow everywhere in the name of elf & safety. It will be politically incorrect to oppose and will be a done deal before you can say pint.

  26. The pint is the perfect sized beer glass.

It is never to be tampered with.

  27. I doubt that pints are going to be banned. Getting a Scot to buy a round is a different story…

  28. They have deep pockets but alligator arms?

Didn’t there used to be a Scot round here?

  29. That is bonkers and shouldn’t be put in the same post as sensible measures re smoking in cars with kids.

Half the pleasure of having champagne or a cocktail is a nice glass. It is part of the experience. I want to drink my posh libations from a glass not a lump of plastic.

  30. The Imperial pint of course has 20 ounces as opposed to the pissant US 16 ounces.

Them numbers do add up to fine value.

  31. Passive smoking is good for children.

  32. Not funny.

  33. Another thing that’s supposed to be dangerous for babies and young children is.. er – intestinal gases in enclosed spaces. Apparently it affects their brains.
So if you have to fart, roll down the windows.

  34. “Not funny”

    Not a joke.

No researchers, no doctors, have ever observed, identifiably, harm from second hand smoke.

The one (now repressed) comprehensive study into the effects of second hand smoking concluded that it has a prophylactic effect on children.

  35. I’m sure that Marlboro did a right honest study.

  36. I doubt it, but the World Health Organisation did before sitting on it.

  37. You can’t murder people on private property.

Passive smoking is good for children.

I’m glad you don’t have children.
