It seems drug mules can have their cake and eat it!
The two British women accused of trying to smuggle £1.5million of cocaine out of Peru pleaded guilty in front of a judge yesterday. Melissa Reid and Michaella McCollum Connolly admitted trying to board a flight from Lima to Spain on August 6 knowing they had 24lb of the class-A drug in their suitcases. The women continue to claim that a gun-toting Colombian mafia forced them to act as drug mules.
So, they have pleaded GUILTY to smuggling £1.5m worth of cocaine but still insist that invisible gun toting mafia made them do it. This confession is aimed at getting them a shorter sentence from the routine 25 years handed down to drug mules. They may be sentenced to a mere 6 -7 years, and then allowed to serve this time in British prisons, where they could then get out in half the time again. What a scam.
So the UK taxpayer may well pick up the tab for keeping these self confessed drug mules behind bars. I hope this does not happen in both cases but in particular in the case of Michaella McCollom Connolly as she defined herself as Irish, only carries an Irish passport, and so should NOT expect the BRITISH taxpayer to fund her time behind bars.
