HAPPY HOUR TO BE BANNED….

By ATWadmin On July 23rd, 2008

Just a few weeks ago, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown told grocery stores to stop offering shoppers cheap food in the form of “Buy One Get One Free deals”. Now Government looks set to tell pubs to stop offering customers cheap alcohol in the form of Happy Hour specials. This is the rise and rise of the left wing neo-puritans. They seek to absolve us from responsibility for our OWN actions and substitute control of our freedoms and limit our choices. They use the guise of doing this for the good of our health and to save the planet but it is a power grab, an extension of the arm of the State.

details from a landlords lobby on Westminster public funded boozing highlighted by the thrusting Mr. Fawkes.

  2. so, me going with my wife down to weatherspoons for a JD and coke and an extra shot of JD for £1 will be out, as a 45 year old i must need some form of guidance from the state, what do i know! So i hope the government will be stopping the subsidy that our beloved MP’s get on the drink in the bar at the houses of parliment.

cheers, all hail to the ale!

  3. DV you’re a hard man to please.
If the Gov’t doesn’t tackle binge-drinking and its associated menaces — you rail against them,
Yet when they do attempt to tackle some root causes of social problems — its the Nanny State.

Some would say you’re in this Blog Ride just to provoke.. but I couldn’t possibly say that !

  4. Yes tackle binge drinking, but should i have to pay more because a few can’t control themselves!! if we are going down this route then, we should have ration books for cigs, and for any type of food deemed bad for us.

Think to take away cheaper drinks is just an eye catching gimmick, they should be clamping down on any shop / pub that sells booze to underage drinkers, and when i say clamp down i mean lose their license to sell! And if people who are over the age limit and are causing offence due to many drinks, they can easly be arrested, a few £80 fines would sort them out

  5. Its quite clear that binge drinking is due to the relative cheapnes of alcohol and the BOGOF offers.

Either drinking to exess is a problem, or it isnt. I think anyone reasonable would think it is.

Either DV has joined the crowds outside Laverys at 2am or he hasnt. He hasnt, (can we check the CCTV?) :) therefore, this is a self-contradicting post, as I presume he doesnt like binge drinking, vandalism, casual sex, the rape and violence that ensure therefrom.

  6. They passed a similar law in Texas umpteen years ago. No two for ones, discounted drinks only for a few hours in the early evening, etc.

Didn’t stop any fool intent on inebriation with enough cash in his pocket from getting publicly soused and menacing the roadways or committing some stupid crime in a blacked out state.

  7. The answer lies in ensuring individuals take personal responsibility for their actions if they get drunk and face the consequences of their own choices.

Trying to control the price of drink for everyone simply punishes all responsible drinkers and removes the issue of personal responsibility
