I was sorry to hear that Gerald Ford, the former US President, had died. He was age 93 – so a fair old innings I guess. I can’t say that I was much of a fan but in fairness to Ford, political giants like Ronald Reagan, Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfeld all moved up the political ladder during his short period in power and he DID have the grace to pardon Richard Nixon.

  1. David,

Let me be the first American here to praise the very decent President Ford and even President Nixon who had the decency to resign. If Bush and Cheney show as much decency and resign together next month, I’ll be the first to ask President Pelosi to pardon them both.

  2. President Peloshi! LOL!

  3. I don’t know a lot about Ford beyond that he helped the USA survive Vietnam and Nixon Crisis. But he was a keen pipe smoker – Kaywoodies and a tobacco called Feld and Stream – and that’s good enough for me. RIP President Ford.

  4. I don’t know if you guys get to watch the US program "Saturday Night Live" over there, but back when it first started – when the show was actually funny – Chevy Chase used to mercilessly tease President Ford, who still in office at the time, by satirizing him as fumbling and clumsy. He took it in such great stride that he actually made a taped appearance on the show and his press secretary hosted an entire episode to get in on the joke. It’s a good man who has a hefty enough sense of humor to laugh at himself like that. And, unlike certain ex-Presidents, Ford had the dignity and reverance for tradition to retire to private life and STFU about public policy once he left office. May he rest in peace.

  5. Emily,

    Nicely said.

  6. Gerald Ford could sit at home and laugh at the incompetence of his successor.

  7. He was a good and honest man. God rest his soul and God bless his family.

  8. I don’t know ,uch about him but I think that his wife did a lot of good in terms of drug addiction etc. Condolences to the family

  9. Aileen,

Just in case you missed it,
"Former president Gerald R. Ford said in an embargoed interview in July 2004 that the Iraq war was not justified."

I’ll answer on another thread. your comment is relevant to this one but if I reply it will take it off Ford and onto Iraq

  11. "He did have the grace," and Alec Baldwin agrees:
