Gals and Guns

By ATWadmin On September 14th, 2008

I grew up surrounded by men who owned guns, predominately rifles and shotguns. They spent their free time on deer leases, duck blinds and the gun range when they weren’t on boats catching whatever the water had to offer that day. These traditions go back generations on both sides of my family. My great grandmother was a pretty fair shot in her day, but I’ve been the only other woman in my family since to handle firearms on a regular basis. My Uncle Bud took me to the gun range for the first time when I was ten, I knocked the eye out the target that day with his smallest rifle and I was hooked. I’ve been on gun range dates where I’ve outshot my men friends, ruining any potential romance and javelina hunts in South Texas where the mad pigs sent everyone scrambling for the roof of the truck. (I have to admit to a range preference, I don’t care for the taste of game.) I find having competence with firearms empowering, it’s a great skill and I’m glad to see Sarah Palin motivating more women to learn the sport.

I found this video at Tigerhawk’s place, his caption is too juicy not to share!

“The Europeans are never going to understand this. Their loss.”

Have youy ever shot and skinned a moose?

I believe they are very easy to kill, and your hero(ine) Palin claims to have killed and skinned a lot of them.

Obviously a good thing for a prospective US veep to have on their cv.

  2. No moose in my neck of the woods, Peter. Plenty of deer though. They’re easy to shoot too, skinning & dressing isn’t too difficult, but it is messy. As I said, I prefer the gun range since I don’t care for game.

What is it with you people and killing what you eat? Are you a vegan?

I’d like to take out the dozen or so coyotes terrorizing my neighborhood, but the libs in Austin aren’t too keen on the idea.

  3. Daphne

I haven’t eaten meat for nearly 25 years.

But I don’t have a problem with humane culling of deer or moose to keep their populations in balance with the local biosphere, provided it’s for sceintific reasons and not for fun.

Or for some macho-political posturing by someone on the make.

  4. This post has me grinning with memories of that great spoof by The Incredible String Bank. Its absence from YouTube is to be deplored.

I was born in Wild Wyoming
    I always fancied roaming
Til I rode into Old Dodge City
Now I’ll stay there til I die
I’m wanted in Texas and Tennessee
Dead or alive Bad Sadie Lee
I take just what I want as I pass by

I can draw faster than a man can see
I can shoot better than Annie Oakley
Ain’t no-one around who shoots better than me
And I’ll show you just what I mean
Fired a shot at a buzzard on a limb
Killed him stone dead but it went through him
Shot a buffalo down in Mexico
    Shot a blasted Jim Crow
In a bar I never had been

I don’t have to wait for Sadie Hawkins Day
All I have to holler is the word okay
They know I’ll shoot them if they run away
But there’s one true love I’ve had
The man I loved was called Daniel Boone
We crooned beneath the watermelon moon in June
But he left me for a ginger-haired ornery raccoon
And that’s what turned me bad!

  5. = The Incredible String BanD ! grrr..

  6. What a heartwarming story.

  7. Daphne, my family of origin was not into hunting or shooting at all – even though we spent lots of time in the wilds of the Colorado Rockies. I was introduced to the sport after I got out of the Army, taken to the range by a friend. I was hooked. He helped me to choose my first gun – a Ruger .357 magnum security six. I love to go to the range, very relaxing. Since then we have acquired several other handguns and Troll has his double barrel shotgun for hunting, but I still always am most comfortable with my little .357. Troll is a big fisherman as well. My family is horrified that I own guns, except for one of my sisters who teaches gun safety classes for the NRA.

As soon as the girls turn 12 they are taking the hunting safety class that the state of PA offers. They most certainly will be comfortable with guns and know the musts and must nots of handling guns safely.

I don’t like venison, except when Troll makes up a batch of venison jerky – nice and spicy.

  8. I like jerky too, but that’s about it on the game meat. My handgun is a beautiful thing, she shoots true every time. I ought to post some of my targets, nailing that circle is an awesome feeling, everyone should head to a gun range at least once in their lives.

Grrrr back ‘atcha Noel! Good song.

  9. More like once a week for the rest of their lives! ;-)

  10. >>More like once a week for the rest of their lives! <<

Which probably wouldn’t be very long if they did.

  11. Gun ranges are not dangerous Noel. The safety rules and regulations are written in stone, if someone is stupid enough not to follow them, they will be stomped right quick by anyone who happens to see it.

  12. It’s a shame. The euros have no concept of how seriously we take gun safety.

  13. Noel, we need to talk. A gun range is one of the safest places in America.

  14. >>The euros have no concept of how seriously we take gun safety.<<

Monica, I’m already sleepy enough here at 3 a.m. without you sending me right off to zzzzz :)

Seriously, I meant if "everyone" were to do a stint at the gun range regularly, and presumably want to own a gun – including all those hordes who apparently post such a threat to Heuston – I’m sure the US would have more gun deaths to mourn p.a. than it already has, and fewer left to mourn them!

But enough of this. I’m off to smoke a cigar on my roof before going to bed, safe in the knowledge my children will grow up in a society free of guns and hurricanes, and that, whatever else happens, there won’t likely be anything like a Karl Rove in high-heels in power here in the foreseeable future!

  15. My last thought is that I’d never be able to hold my gun steady at any range (pun) if I were on a "gun range date" (the very idea is hilarious) beside either of you ladies!

  16. Noel, I hate it when you sound so pussy on this subject. I bet you’d have a load of fun at the gun range with me, you probably wouldn’t be able to sit down for a week after you nailed the center for the first time.

Speaking of cigars, I bought a couple of black market Cubans off a friend the other day. I’m holding them for special.

  17. We could convert Noel. Easy. ;-)

  18. We’d show him a good time.

  19. Cubans are very expensive. I can’t believe what they charge for those things at the so-called duty free at Heathrow.

Its not as though they’re paying the workers great salaries for making them.

  20. We need to start an atw gun club Monica. You, me and maybe the ten other gun lovers here? We’ll have David work up some basic black t-shirts with a slamming logo. Satisfyingly sublime would best describe the experience of unloading a full clip directly into the center of a target. Everyone should try it at least once.

Cubans are obscenely expensive Phantom, mine better be insanely good when I clip and fire ‘em up.

  21. Daphne -hope you’re keeping them well. Those fellas can dry out pretty quick I believe (but am no expert)

Out of interest how easy is it to buy semi-automatic rifles in America still? Over here we tend to have the image of America as one big gun fair but I remember hearing it varied from state-to-state, and even in the most liberal states it was hard to buy semi-automatic guns.

  22. Are you saying European men and women don’t hunt? eh?

I have to admit that inserted clip isn’t quite as entertaining as watching Del Boy rock up to a country shoot on Only Fools and Horses with a sawn off pump action shotgun XD

I think I was about ten when my dad showed me how to hold and fire a rifle in our backgarden. I was and still am an excellent shot.

  23. I don’t mind guns per se, hunting can be fun. It is when lunatics turn shopping malls and schools into rifle ranges with assault rifles where we part ways.

  24. And don’t forget the daily run of the mill gun carnage in every region in America. Its gone on for so long that its just background noise.

  25. I have shot extensively at ranges in the U.S. and here in the U.K. and to be fair the safety culture in the States was every bit as tight as at home . I am a range officer at my club and we have a rule — one strike and you are out , on a range there is rarely a minor accident and we want everyone to go home safe and sound .
Really enjoyed the video , and if you do form a ATW gun club count me in ladies .

  26. >>I have shot extensively at ranges in the U.S. and here in the U.K.<<

Yes, Doc, but the question is how many of them did you hit?

    >>Its gone on for so long that its just background noise.<<

    Well said, Phantom.

By the way, I wonder if this is what the gun crowd means when it supports citizens’ god-given rights to carry guns?

  27. We in New York have the right to be in a gun free environment. We have better rights than those who live in places where you can hide guns while you move around the public.

  28. I know many people, most of them law enforcement, who refuse to visit New York because they are not allowed to carry their gun. The law abiding citizens are not the ones who are going to get you, Phantom. It’s the criminals – and they are the only ones who will be packing in New York.

  29. Yes but its not just the criminals

Its the hot tempered guy you get into an argument with, including a family member. I’d be more afraid of them than I would a criminal. The criminal is usually satisfied if you give him the money.

I would have thought that police officers from other states would be allowed to carry their firearm when visiting here. That does not make sense to me.

  30. Phantom, I would agree with you if criminals actually followed the law in that respect. There are probably tens or hundreds of thousands of your fellow New Yorkers walking around with concealed weapons on any given Saturday night, some of them criminals, some non-criminals who carry for protection.

  31. They aren’t. It makes no sense at all.

I have never had a problem with being shot in an argument, and I’ve never pulled my gun out in such a situation. I think that it is easy for anti-gun persons such as yourself to believe that most Americans will just shoot anyone they don’t agree with. In areas where concealed-carry laws have been loosened up, those fears have not come to fruition. In fact, the opposite has occurred – crime rate has fallen.

  32. Monica – Anyone who feels the need to bring a gun to Manhattan is the type of tourist we can live without.

  33. Monica

But my point, discussed at length in past threads, is that states with liberal gun laws have much higher violent crime and accidental death rates than do states with restrictive gun laws.

And the difference in rate between gun happy America and gun phobic Britain, Japan, even Canada… is vast. There’s no real debate.

  34. There IS a debate, you just don’t want to hear it.

    Mahons, happy to oblige.

  35. Ah, but this tends to end the debates.

    (the murder rates)

  36. I mean seriously, who backs their vacation bag with the mindset "Camera, check, Clothing, check, Maps, check, AK-47, check."

    Aside from the Palins?

  37. When I was last in Bermuda, there was a guy from Texas (I think) that attempted to enter the island with a pistol in his hand luggage. ( how he got it through US security is something I would like to know )

They kept him in jail for I think a week, and it was a huge story on the island.

C’mon. When on holiday in Hawaii or Disney World or wherever, you never know when you’ll get the urge to blow away a moose.

  38. Phantom – McCain should have named you as his Vice President choice, it would have put New York in play, and you have more foreign travel miles logged than anyone.

  39. I might have had less luck in firing up the base though!

I’d be like Rudy – too liberal on some things for the base, too law and order for many libs to vote for me. A coup d’etat is my only hope at power.

  40. Phantom: True, despite never meeting face to face I suspect you don’t look as good in lipstick as our Sarah.

However, you could still make a run for the Hockey Dad vote.

  41. Except I don’t like hockey. Too much like soccer

The only righteous sport is baseball, preferably of the National League variety.

All other sports reek of Communism with the possible exception of boxing.

  42. Ahem. What’s wrong with Communism?

  43. Nothing if you are into mass murder and economic suicide.

  44. The violence of communism is nothing compared to the violence and genocide required to sustain the injustices of capitalism. That’s why I’m a revolutionary communist, it’s a superior system, based on fairness and equality.

  45. The violence of communism is nothing compared to the violence and genocide required to sustain the injustices of capitalism.

Remind us how many died in Russia between 1917 and 1939 in order to bring about the communist utopia. I believe the consensus estimate is in the tens of millions.

  46. Throw in the mass killings in Mao’s China and Khmer Rouge Cambodia while you’re at it.

  47. Though guys, while the Communist Party in Russia are not blameless, they basically continued on the old way of doing things. Under the Tsar, if you disagreed the you were either murdered or sent to the Gulags. The same continued under the Communists. It was not a direct result of Communism any more than the actions of Pinochet, or Imperial Japan were a direct result of Capitalism.

Communism is wrong but so is Laissez Faire Capitalism. The right system is somewhere in the middle.

  48. The Tsar didn’t try to kill Lenin. But Lenin had the Tsar and his family murdered.

The old order did not try to destroy any class of people. But the Communists actually did destroy the kulaks and many business people and large numbers who opposed the new order.

And their murderous incompetence led to great famines when they forced people onto collective farms

Plus the ethnic cleansing with the internal deportations of Jews and Tatars, etc.

The experiences of Russia, China and Cambodia were not anamolies. The road of Communism leads directly to such horrifying catastrophe. If the FARC or Shining Path in Latin America ever reached full power, you’d have a Latin holocaust too. Communism leads to genocide. Period.

  49. I partially agee with Seamus. It went the wrong way in Russia. The Bolsheviks original aims were noble and remain worth fighting far.

Capitalism, and in particular the neo-liberal strain of it, need to be fought and defeated and ultimately that is what will happen, I believe.

  50. Drunken Cyclist – a revolutionary communist? Where are your barricades? at the local Tesco?

  51. the Communists actually did destroy the kulaks and many business people and large numbers who opposed the new order

Doh Phantom, that’s revolution. The greedy elite had to hand back their ill-gotten gains. The land is for all to share, not a few to keep for themselves. Same principle in Cuba. Land redistribution is RIGHT.

  52. Land reform can be good. What happened in Russia and Cuba was land theft, often from small holders. Which led to poverty on a large scale.

Keep talkin’ The small farmers of Ireland and England may be interested in knowing what you lot have in store for them should you reach power someday.

  53. It wasn’t just the elite, the communist regimes destroyed of the 20th Century peasants and workers. Whatever lofty goals they proclaimed, they ignored.

  54. Pyotr Stolypin, the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, or Tsarist Russia’s Prime Minister, quelled mass revolution by Hanging thousands and thousands of Trade Unionists and other representatives. The first "Bloody Sunday" in history occured after the Tsar sent the Cossacks into a crowd of peaceful protesters.

The only reason that the Tsar never killed Lenin was because Lenin only returned to Russia after the February Revolution. The Tsar never had the oppurtunity. He did try to kill Trotsky and sent Stalin to the Gulags on three occassions.

  55. Actually, DC, the agrarian reforms of the Third Duma where much fairer and much more successful than any inacted under the Soviets. Land redistribution was needed in Russia but it needed to be done right, which it was being done until the start of the First World War.

  56. Seamus

    noted

  57. The Tsar was awful, and what followed was worse.

  58. Land reform can be good. What happened in Russia and Cuba was land theft, often from small holders. Which led to poverty on a large scale.

Incorrect once again. The small farmers of Ireland have nothing to fear from me or mine. Fairness threatens nobody and equality threatens only the greedy.

  59. Define "small"

If you assumed power ( God forbid ) whose land would you steal, excuse me, expropriate? Who is "greedy" and who is not? Would you take the land from any farmer?

  60. Yes there would be a certain amount of redistribution, particularly from landed gentry types who have no right to keep big estates in Ireland.

Small farmers would have nothing to fear and would in fact fare very under my plan.

  61. Lets be precise

How big a plot of land would be suitable for the taking? What would be the threshold? Would there be full compensation?

Who says that some property owners have no right to own their own land?

  62. Clearly Phantom is a counter revolutionary force, all agents of reaction must be dealt with severely Comrade Drunken, if the organ of the party is to penetrate to the bottom of the proletariat.

  63. Who says that some property owners have no right to own their own land?

It’s not their land. It belongs to us all and must be used in the interests of everyone.

While I’ll not reveal precise details here (for all sorts of reasons) suffice it to say that small farmers would do well while the fat cats would have to cough up.

There are ‘lords’ and ‘ladies’ on this island will ill-gotten land. I’d take it back from the benefit of all.

    Would there be full compensation?

    That’s a negative.

  64. A (perhaps) interesting side note to the talk of Kulaks is that Mikhail Kalishanakov – of AK47 fame and hero of the Revolution, Hero of Socialist Labour etc etc was a Kulak and at one point was living under sentence of death by the Soviets

As to Communism, I have to agree with The Phantom and Mahons. I was a fan of socialism I suppose until studying Development Economics. Not only were the socialist experiments in China and Russia one of the worst examples of mass-slaughter in human history, I believe human behaviour and how it reacts to different incentives makes pure socialism incompatible with medium-term economic development.

A bit of socialism is a different thing of course…

  65. Communism in China did the impossible – it kept the ( brilliant, hard working, capitalist by nature ) Chinese poor for a half century more than was necessary.

The capitalist moves by China since Deng have unleashed the most rapid improvement in living standards by a large group in world history.

Under a Communist economic regime, China would still be poor. Fact.

  66. Have you checked how equal China is of late?

  67. Phantom
I read somewhere that China had been the worlds largest economic power for seventeen of the last twenty centuries.

How long will it take to regain that place? Got to be this centrury I would have thought.

    DC
Less equal than it was when millions were starving. However, that is the point. How much economic development can you have without SOME inequality?

If I work twice as hard as you, all things being equal, I should expect to earn more.

YOur views on purely inherited wealth vis-a-vis parasite aristocracy I do have some sympathy with btw.

  68. I’ve went to Beijing last summer. I saw many, many people living a Western lifestyle or damned close to it.

There still are severe problems –and hundreds of millions of very poor people– but the improvement in living standards is undeniable.

And more people are lifted out of poverty every month there.

I dislike the phrase "developing world" as it tends to lump all nondeveloped countries in the one bucket including many African countries that simply will never develop lets face it.

Vietnam, China, India are developing nations. Korea and Singapore became developed in the blink of an eye in historical terms.

China being so large, will take a bit longer, but yes, I could see most Chinese people enjoying a European/Japanese/US lifestyle in 60-75 years or so.

  69. Drunken Cyclist – the land of the small Irish farmer is not their’s it is "ours". How British of you.

The small Irish farmer would fall down laughing at your suggestion.

  70. In my opinion socialism is not about Wealth Equality. In my opinion socialism is about taken those at the bottom and making their lives better and giving them more oppurtunities. I don’t care if Wealth inequality increases as long as those at the bottom are doing better.

  71. I spoke with some of those small farmers a while back –and they have a very jaundiced eye to those who would confiscate land. These (nationalist) farmers did not express great confidence in the ultimate intentions of Sinn Fein should they ever achieve power.

  72. "It went the wrong way in Russia. The Bolsheviks original aims were noble and remain worth fighting far."

Communist lovers/apologists: please understand that noone disputes the nobility of the utopian dream. If only human beings weren’t involved!

Because there is a fatal flaw in the communist/socialist model and that is the nature of mankind.

Communism’s fatal flaw is to centralize control and power in a few individuals (the government).

Human nature is human nature. And people working in government are no exception. By centralizing power and effectively castrating most individuals for the ideal notion of "common good", government officials are free to indulge themselves, as people do. Also, because the fruits of one’s labors are taken by the government and distrubuted to other people, there is little incentive to work.

Under communism, and high taxation, individuals ask themselves: "Why should I work hard if my neighbor is sitting around and we both are given equal portions of the nations wealth by the government?"

Communism/socialism is ALWAYS corrupt, inefficient and wasteful.

And, history shows that it is also often murderous.

  73. "Human nature is human nature. And Government is no exception. By centralizing power and effectively castrating the individual for the common good, individuals in the power seat (government) are free to indulge themselves, as people do."

Not always true. Why he has many criticisms, Fidel Castro has always embraced the truer nature of Communism. While Soviet Premiers lived in huge palaces and Chinese Chairman lived in huge palaces while Fidel Castro lives in a two up, two down house and has for decades.

"The fatal flaw is this: control and power is taken from the individual and given, to varying degrees, to the Government."

The argument that Communism would pose is that Capitalism, at least Laissez Faire Capitalism, removes choices as those at the bottom don;t have any choices and just have to live with their place in life.

  74. "Why should I work hard if my neighbor is sitting around and we both are given equal portions of the nations wealth by the government?"

That is why the Soviet Union switched from War Communism to the New Economic Policy. The best way to describe it is as follows

A Farmer needs 1 Ton of food to feed him and his family.

War Communism – The State take all surplus.

Farmer 1 grows 10 Tons of food. The Soviets took 9 Tons and allowed him to keep 1.

Farmer 2 grows 1 Ton of food. The Soviets took 0 Tons and allowed him to keep 1.

NEP – The State take 1/2 of what you Grow.

Farmer 1 grows 10 Tons of food. The Soviets took 5 Tons and allowed him to eat 1 and sell 4.

Farmer 2 grows 1 Ton of food. The Soviets took 1/2 a Ton and allowed him to keep 1/2 a Ton and starve.

  75. Seamus: "Fidel Castro has always embraced the truer nature of Communism."

Castro? the benevolent dictator? Please, reflect for just one little minute on that fact that many Cubans (not just a few crazies) really do set out to sea on mattresses (!!) to escape the hell-hole of Cuba. I’m not making that up.

Castro imprisons and murders those who do not agree with his vision of utopia.

Free wheeling laissez-faire capitalism at least gives everyone the chance to get up off their asses and work, with the hope of hitting the big time. They don’t get killed for this. Or have their stuff stolen by the government. No guarantees. But a chance at least.

  76. Castro has his long list of excuses, but the poverty of the Cuban people is the fault of he, his brother and the completely flawed economic policies that they brought to that country

Pure capitalism or pure socialism is no solution. You need three dashes of capitalism, one dash of socialism, and two dashes of common sense. That’s what all prosperous countries do.

  77. "Free wheeling laissez-faire capitalism at least gives everyone the chance to get up off their asses and work"

It doesn’t give everyone a chance. Under that form of Capitalism the poor stay poor and the rich get richer by explotation.

  78. "Castro? the benevolent dictator? Please, reflect for just one little minute on that fact that many Cubans (not just a few crazies) really do set out to sea on mattresses (!!) to escape the hell-hole of Cuba. I’m not making that up."

You obviously didn’t pick up on what I was saying. Castro doesn’t live in a Mansion or a Palace. He lives as a regular joe.

  79. Communism doesn’t give everyone a chance either. If you are outside the chosen group, or if you are a dissident, you have no recourse outside the monopoly government system.

There are countless examples of people who were born poor but who through hard work and brains made themselves to the upper middle class or rich – in America, Ireland, England, Australia, China, etc etc. I’ve met some of these people. And probably you have too.

Castro is a regular Joe- with the ultimate luxury of supreme power over a country.

  80. Seamus: "You obviously didn’t pick up on what I was saying. Castro doesn’t live in a Mansion or a Palace. He lives as a regular joe."

    Try to think about this:

Castro does what ever he f***ing wants to do, whenever he wants to do it! If that means watching "South Park" on TV, learning the art of Japanese haiku, going to a party in New York, or smoking cigars in a shack, who cares?

Everyone else in Cuba obeys Castro, or they are imprisoned, killed or on a raft trying to float to America.

  81. And btw, Seamus, the "rich get richer" and the "poor stay poor" is not supported by statistics. America’s mobility is well-documented – the poor getting rich, and many a rich kid living in poverty.

It seems to come down to the desire to work, and the ability to work in a smart way. Effort and talent is well-rewarded in America. regardless of your bloodline, or your inheritance.

  82. Seamus

I would rather live in a country that is prosperous, succesful, and genuinely democratic with a leader who has a fleet of mansions, than one where the leader lives in a shack along with the rest of the population.

  83. We were "poor" when I was a child.

Now I own my house free and clear and have an income that Obama may think makes me "rich""

My sisters and their families own their own houses and have good incomes also.

This is not unusual here- it is unbelievably commonplace. The country is filled with such stories.

Castro has nothing to teach us – quite the contrary.

  84. The blockade has kept Cuba poor. Shame on you.

  85. I oppose the blockade and always have. For many reasons, including that it provides a bad leader and his flunkies with a cop out for bad performance.

But the extreme poverty on the island cannot be blamed on it.

You have an insane economic system that provides no incentives for individuals to work hard, and Cuba has been very unfriendly to Canadians and European mining and other risks that sought to establish plants there.

Plus only Castro friendly types get the right to work in certain decent jobs.

  86. I agree with you there DC. The economic embargo on Cuba by the US is wrong and counterproductive.

  87. I’ve changed my mind on the Cuban embargo. I used to support it and I understand why many still do, including the government.

I’ve decided that the best way to get rid of the Castro regime and communism on the island is to make sure the people have stuff. Lots of stuff! Populations with something to lose (houses, cars, microwaves, food, businesses, toothpaste, etc.) don’t tend to put up with authoritarian regimes and failed economies quite as complacently as downtrodden, near-starved people who don’t have a pot to piss in.

  88. They have plenty of things you lot lack, Daph. Like decent education and health systems.

  89. You really ought to do some more research on Cuba, only the elite get good medical care, education, decent housing and food. The regular people (the masses) live in terrible conditions on the edge of starvation.

  90. I’ve been there love.

only the elite get good medical care, education, decent housing and food

Wrong on each count. Everybody (unlike in the US) gets free medical care an education. Everyone has a roof over there head and enough food, though some people have not much more than enough.

    You haven’t a clue.

  91. Most pro-communists and leftists who’ve been there see it through rose colored glasses. You obviously haven’t spent anytime listening or talking to Cubans who feel free to speak about the reality of daily life in Cuba.

I almost feel sorry for you. You seem so earnest in your concern for a decent life for all people, but you’re so enthralled by your utopian version of communist ideology that you fail to see the very real suffering, government brutality and substandard quality of life that the common man lives with under actual communism.

    I’m done on this topic.

  92. I’m done on this topic

    I think that’s best.

  93. Drunken C: Of course you can only study what the Cuban government wishes you to study. And if you dissent, jail or death. Just because apologists for communism get less and less it doesn’t make you any less ridiculous.

  94. Supporters of the Castro regime are like the Japanese soldiers who couldn’t realize that the war was over and who stayed in the jungles of Guam for decades awaiting orders.

Am not sure where DC hangs his helmet, but its probably Ireland or England. And in either place the huge majority of the citizens have a standard of living along with greater personal and political freedoms that Cubans can only dream of. If he had his eyes open, he’d have noticed those things.

You don’t see anyone ( other than the odd political get-a-life type ) moving from Europe to Cuba. But if you allowed unlimited migration from Cuba to Europe or America you’d see a huge flow of people out of there. As we’ve seen in small and large waves since 1959.

History will show Castro to be one of the worst catastrophes ever to have afflicted Cuba. He destroyed what had been the Caribbean’s leading economy, spitting tens of thousands of families while at it.

Cuba will be a free country again someday. I hope to see Cuba soon, perhaps while it is still in this predawn era. I will have my eyes wide open though.
