One Broken Heart Coming Right Up

By ATWadmin On October 31st, 2008

Barack Obama lays plans to deaden expectation after election victory reports The Times. Hmmm … is the Earth not due for healing yet?

Barack Obama’s senior advisers have drawn up plans to lower expectations for his presidency if he wins next week’s election, amid concerns that many of his euphoric supporters are harbouring unrealistic hopes of what he can achieve.

Well it wouldn’t be a bad idea, if a bit late. A fella likes to know his bride doesn’t harbour any nasty surprises before he carries her across the threshold. Liberally sprinkling your patter with ‘hope’ and ‘change’ for two years, deliberately raising expectations only to rein it back when you’re through the door and halfway up the stairs is a bit cheeky. ‘Chutzpah’ springs to mind.

Still, we’ll put Peggy “I won’t have to pay for my gas or mortgage” Joseph down for the Libertarian Party campaign of 2012 right now, shall we?

  1. Yeegads….we are in such trouble.

  2. I’m sure she means that Obama’s tax reforms will enable her and many millions of low income Americans to succeed and thrive with their small business ventures and help power a thriving dynamic new era for the American dream…

Martin may have just seen the promised land, but Obama is gonna help y’all get their to it :)

  3. I don’t know what it was that Obama said in his speech to inspire this nice young lady with such glee, but yes, I think she’s in for a bit of a surprise if she believes that Obama WILL pay her mortgage or utility bills, and what’s more, she’s being rather selfish if she thinks he (or anyone else) SHOULD pay her bills.

However, another thought strikes me: If it is fair comment (and it is) to suggest that Obama cannot possibly live up to the full extent of his euphoric "hope/change" platform, then is it not also fair comment to suggest that he also cannot possibly bring to full fruition all the nightmarish scenarios of doom which those of us on the right constantly warn of, if he is elected?

  4. Tom Tyler -

I don’t think so. It’s always fair to suggest that politicians can bring about doom, and some are more likely to do it than others. Blimey, the only thing that stops some of them is their own incompetence. In McCain vs Obama it may well be a close run thing.

  5. "Peggy "I won’t have to pay for my gas or mortgage" Joseph"

"I think she’s in for a bit of a surprise if she believes that Obama WILL pay her mortgage or utility bills"

Perhaps she’d be surprised to be misquoted like she was here also.

She said she wouldn’t have to worry about them. Not that she wouldn’t have to pay them.

  6. Well, yes, OK Pete, I take your point, but I think that only a handful of politicians (Hitler, Stalin, and perhaps for a more modern example, Mugabe) have managed to bring about REAL doom and suffering upon their countries, and in all cases it took time. I think Obama would probably be bad for the USA on balance, but I wouldn’t place him in quite the same category as the above examples…not yet at least.

  7. Tom, so if A is false, then B must be false?

    I don’t think the 2 are connected.

    A. Hope and Change. Obama can’t possibly live up to this platform. First, like "true love," the "hope and change platform" means many different things to many different people. Probably to rich bankers on Wall Street, "hope and change" means an end to white guilt over the racism of the past. To the unemployed auto worker in Detroit, hope and change means govt.subsidized health care for his family. To Peggy Johnson. "hope and change" means the US government is going to pay off her mortgage.

    B. Nightmarish scenarios of an Obama Administration:

scenario 1: a rogue nation challenges Obama (and the US) with a military strike somewhere – perhaps even a terrorist dirty bomb within the US borders. Obama is unable to adequately respond.

This scenario was suggested by Joe Biden, Obama’s running mate. And Biden feels that it is highly likely.

scenario 2: Obama passes through COngress enormous entitlement programs which bloat bureaucracy, and increase spending and the national debt, These program are inefficient, corrupt and ineffective. To pay for the programs, taxes are increased, and money is printed. This results in inflation and stops economic growth.

With Obama as President and Pelosi and Reid controlling Congress, increase in both expenditures and taxes are virtually certain.

scenario 3.:Several Supremem COurt justices retire in the next 4 years and Obama appoints activist judges for life to replace them.

This scenario is highly likely. Several justices are quite elderly. The Democrat majority Congress will not block Obama’s appointment.

The result: The US will decline economically, be threatened militarily, and liberal activist justices of the Supreme Court will no longer interpret law, but will legislate from the bench, enacting radical social changes in America.

  8. But Frank, why won’t Peggy have to worry about her mortgage and gas costs once Obama is elected?

  9. For the reasons I stated above.

  10. Colm, she probably doesn’t pay income taxes – that means she’s got her hand out for some of the huge money I pay to the fed. I call that redistribution of wealth.

We need to go to a flat tax with every working American paying at least something into our shared system.

  11. Maybe she placed a bet on him winning ages ago at long odds , and is looking forward to a big payout.

  12. Why wouldn’t she after the incumbents played off and exacerbated energy issues and housing issues. Maybe she thought she could afford her mortgage or keep her home safe if she didn’t have to worry about going bankrupt if she or her family get sick. Or getting her kids into college wouldn’t cost her her house.

All of which Obama covered in his speech.

"We measure progress by how many people can find a job that pays the mortgage; whether you can put a little extra money away at the end of each month so you can someday watch your child receive her college diploma. We measure the strength of our economy not by the number of billionaires we have or the profits of the Fortune 500, but by whether someone with a good idea can take a risk and start a new business, or whether the waitress who lives on tips can take a day off to look after a sick kid without losing her job – an economy that honors the dignity of work."

Uh yeah. Stupid overexcited woman. What a terrible idea he just concocted for America! How ‘socialist’! How awful!

  13. Daphne

What makes you think she doesn’t pay income taxes? I don’t know this but my guess would be that most of those who don’t, also don’t own a home and have a mortgage to worry about. Most likely what she meant was that she believes that if Obama is elected the economy will get better, she’ll make more, and she’ll pay lower taxes than she does now. There’s nothing at all in there that suggests she thinks the government will pay her mortgage.

  14. Well, said Neal and James.

    >>There’s nothing at all in there that suggests she thinks the government will pay her mortgage.<<

Oh, that doesn’t matter. We can always imagine, can’t we?

  15. Success isn’t inevitable, it is something we will have to work towards as a nation. And the majority of us appear to think we have a better chance with Obama than McCain. At least after the deplorable last 8 years we’ll have a chance to try soemthing else.

  16. And might I add paying her mortgage doesn’t bother me as much as paying AIG’s.

  17. Since over 40% of Americans don’t pay any income tax, I’m betting that whole deadbeat contingent is pretty pleased with Obama’s promise of passing out a piece of my $30,000 in federal income tax directly into their pockets as a "tax rebate."

I think she’s probably one of those parasites.

  18. Why would you assume she doesn’t own a house? Conveniently forgotten Fannie and Freddie low income, no-doc loans?

  19. Peggy Joseph doesn’t seem unemployed to me. She might not be earning alot of money, but I don’t think I’m looking at someone out of work.

But her situation is a little beside the point. She’s clearly enraptured and her expectations of what Obama will do materially for her are unreasonable and delusional. Granted, she’s starstruck at seeing the biggest star around, but so are millions of Americans who will never see him.

All of which will turn the usual disappointment with failed politicians into despair, and it will happen because – unless you work for Goldman Sachs – politicians cannot deliver on these fantastical promises.

  20. Daphne,
Why do you think she is ‘low-income’ and probably a parasite?

    BTWwhatis ‘low-income’?

  21. (GONG!) Round Seven!

  22. I see that Obama’s aunt is now seen to be an illegal immigrant, and living in state funded ‘social housing’, having overstayed her visitor’s visa. Of course he denies all knowledge of such a thing, despite meeting her infrequently but regularly. His campaign now has to refund her donations, as she is not American, and of course that also means she has not paid any taxes. Let’s see if the media do to her what they tried to do with Joe.

Low income – try minimum wage as a starter point,…
