The Fire This Time

By Mahons On October 11th, 2017

We seem to be having more than our share of calamities here in the US: multiple hurricanes, flooding, shooting incidents and a reality television star in the White House.  Now we have raging fires in California that have destroyed over 70,000 acres, killed at least 17 people and turned thousands of homes into ash.

Winds are a big factor, and the efforts of firefighters nearly Herculean just to keep some flames at bay.  Scary and fast flames can wipe you out in minutes, while oddly passing by others who are unscathed.

Here is hoping they get some prolonged rain, but it doesn’t seem likely at the moment.

I was just thinking that. The US has now been hit by four natural disasters since January. Fortunately only one of them affected the whole country.

  2. California can be the most physically wonderful place, but boy it is susceptible to everything – earthquakes, Santa Ana winds, sandstorms, floods, fires, droughts.

  3. there are over 200 people missing

  4. It’s not that unusual.

I recall back in 2011 you were getting at least one major Hurricane disaster every month.

    Here’s just the US one’s.

I blame Brexit and Trump for these 2011 disasters….

  5. And that’s just the one’s that I know about sitting over here in England.

  6. One Hurricane disaster a month?

  7. There is a movie in release about the very brave people that fight this type of fire

  8. I’ve seen planes fighting fires in the Alps. They fly down to the surface of a lake, fly along the surface while drawing up water through some kind of scooper, before rising again and returning to the fire.

I often wondered why countries don’t agree to form a pool of such aircraft and other resources – for major fires, earthquakes, flooding, etc, – that will then be deployed en masse in whatever country they are needed. It’s also strange that scientists haven’t devised some environmentally safe substance for spraying onto large fires before they get out of hand.

In Australia forest fires are often started by such simple things as the heat magnifying effect of curved glass from a discarded bottle. When the sun is strong enough, this will cause leaves etc to inflame, and the result is the horror conflagrations you see in Ausralia every year.

  9. Mahons you got caught in the middle of something.

    I won’t contact you again.

  10. masons Yep at least one per month. I excluded some disasters as not being in the Americas But that’s an awful lot of work for the Insurance industry. But it’s what we are there for..
I’m getting home quite late these days. Harvey Irma and Maria are causing a load of work for yours truly

  11. 31 dead over 450 now missing
