  1. I think that everyone here will get the information at the same time from major web based sources.

No one here AFAIK regularly goes through that ( massive ) bus station on a regular basis.

  2. thanks Tom

  3. This is a time when you worry about the co workers

I don’t know any who pass through there

Zillions who go through the Penn Station and Grand Central train stations , but not the Port Authority

  4. //I think that everyone here will get the information at the same time from major web based sources//

I’ve noticed that BBC is consistently faster on the ball with American breaking news than CNN. Some time ago BBC was already reporting a pipe bomb and that a man has been arrested, while CNN was still carrying only a vague report of an explosition being heard.

It would be interesting to see how BBC compares to other networks in this regard.

  5. Pipe bombs, while dangerous if you’re close up, generally don’t cause mass casualties.

We used to make and explode pipe bombs for fun as kids back home. It was very dangerous fun, but we didn’t worry about that at the time.

  6. the British press in general is a must read daily. I have found hundreds of American stories reported in the British press long before they are addressed in the American Press.

  7. Eek

    That was some hobby

Never did that, but my fellow delinquents and I used to love to set off very large fireworks such as M80s and Cherry bombs. This site says that they were banned in 1966 but we were able to buy them well after that.

    http://keystonefireworks.com/news/m-80s-and-cherry-bombs/

  8. The Daily Mail has a huge focus on the US. I don’t know if this was always the case, but it is now.

This helps them in two ways – their core British audience is extremely fascinated by the US, and it is growing a web-based US audience.

They may be a paper that benefits from the web, rather than being hurt by it?

  9. you can still get m80s down south I believe…. Playing with pipe bombs…. I won’t comment, If I say what I’m thinking the thread will descend into the depths in seconds.

  10. //the British press in general is a must read daily. I have found hundreds of American stories reported in the British press long before they addressed in the American Press.//

Yes, and with the cultural war going on, the US press is often so partisan that you only get part of the story. The European press of course has its own take on American stories, but is generally more neutral on that endless and stupid bickering going on between the parties in the US, and will therefore generally give you a fuller picture.

You will no doubt agree, PVR, that people outside America often know more about the US than Americans do.
(of course there are always plenty of people everywhere who know next to nothing about their own country.)

  11. I am amazed that none of us blew our hands off.

In the pre Giuliani days, NYC and Brooklyn in particular during July 4 used to be a war zone with small and large fireworks of every description

  12. // Playing with pipe bombs…. I won’t comment,//

Go on, say it! It’s Christmas; we’ll all forgive. 🙂

  13. I would think that it is true that very many British and Irish know as much about the US as Americans do.

They think about the US constantly, as they listen to US music, watch US made films, etc.

There is a vast cultural connection that cannot be overstated. It goes both ways, but I think that there’s no question that the Europeans know a lot more about the US than vicey versey.

  14. We used to throw what were called quarter sticks. They were about 3 inches long 2 inches around with a waterproof center fuse.

If you threw them on a Lawn it would remove a basketball size section of grass and if you threw them in water it would send water 40 feet in the air. It is amazing none of got injured.

  15. Those may be what we called ” blockbusters “

  16. Americans in general are very idiosyncratic about National news.

The Americans that frequent this site are exceptions to the rule.

  17. They are now saying this looks like it was a failed suicide bomb

  18. //It goes both ways, but I think that there’s no question that the Europeans know a lot more about the US than vicey versey//

Yes. Another big difference, I’d imagine, is that there is a more or less homogenous level of knowledge in Europe, whereas among Americans the knowledge the individual has differs incredibly. Some really know a lot (not just about geography), whereas others are embarrassingly ill-informed.

We all have our anecdotes. I was driving around with a guy from Holland. I heard one young man in a camp site in Virginia ask him which highway we’d taken when driving from the Netherlands.
Another remarked when hearing him that he was suprised that English was the language of Holland.

On the other hand there are no many people – especially on the East Coast – with a really deep interest in and understanding of the European situation.

  19. = On the other hand there are SO many people

  20. ” blockbusters “….. that’s it, couldn’t remember.

One fourth of July we were sitting on the boat in Margate drinking and someone had a shopping bag full of them….. It’s amazing we didn’t get killed. We kept yelling depth charge and throwing them in the bay….

  21. Very many Americans don’t know anything about the news – inside the US, or God help us outside of it.

I am constantly amazed by this.

  22. there are people I know that can tell you the starting line up of every team in Football, baseball, or hockey…. yet couldn’t tell you who the vice president is, let alone the British prime minister.

But I think sports fans are that way everywhere.

  23. a brooklyn resident….. no name yet

  24. Bread and circuses, Jerry Springer, and Reality TV.

That’s what plenty of people believe in, not just in the US either.

  25. I have an alibi

  26. lol…. do you need one

  27. This won’t harm Trump’s campaign to restrict immigration from bad culture nations.

We have been lucky in that most of these guys in recent years here have been incompetent. That will not always be the case.

  28. yeah the majority have been amateurs, don’t know how long that luck will last.

  29. so far only four others injured besides the scumbag

  30. Abbot and Costello are about to speak…..

  31. Akayed Ullah is bombers name

  32. apparently ISIS are saying he didn’t install the latest up-date to the manual
” How to be a successful pipe-bomber, win 72 virgins and influence jihad”

  33. lol

  34. “You will no doubt agree, PVR, that people outside America often know more about the US than Americans do.
(of course there are always plenty of people everywhere who know next to nothing about their own country.)”

Typical European conceit with no basis in actual reality. If it makes you feel somehow superior, carry on.

  35. ignore him

  36. patty,Pat
wish there was a US version of The Guardian
then we’d all be on the same page 🙂
( seriously dunno why they don’t expand into that market, i think it might be a runner !)

  37. Wish granted

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news

  38. Drudge has a link to every major British Publication, these things are not hard to find for anyone interested. It’s the lack of interest that’s the disgrace.

  39. Many large US newspapers don’t have any reporters in Europe.

But I’d think that all the big British ones have people here.

  40. I think that everyone here will get the information at the same time from major web based sources.

A polite way of pointing out that this post is a multi-coloured, copy and paste, dog’s dinner.

  41. and your point Tarasov?

It’s a post to discuss something that was happening in realtime so those of us that wish to discuss the events have a thread to do so…..

Is it said to be anything else? Are you implying there is something FALSE about it?

And do you have anything to contribute other than baseless criticism?

  42. Whilst I get my news from a number of sources, SKY, Haaretz, the always magnificent Irish Times and Irish News, Channel 4 and even the LES and Telegraph, (I also like the Guardian for analysis but they’re a bit too middle class trendy lefty), the Atlantic etc my first reference point is the BBC. The BBC is quite simply the best news outlet in the world.

The scandal sheets of the Lie Mail and sExpress and the crude propaganda outlet Breitbart are best left to those who wish to confirm their own prejudices (which is what they exist for), and any story run by them is best checked with at least two other sources.

‘You’ll not see that in the (non good) MSM’ usually means that the (good) non MSM don’t have a standard of ethics to be held accountable to.

  43. there are many that will disagree with you that the BBC has good ethics.

The press all over the globe is corrupt and should always be read with a jaundiced eye no matter what nation it is based in. They’ve all been proven to be full of shit at some point or another.

  44. What flaws do you find in Fox News?

  45. There are many that will disagree with you that the BBC has good ethics.

I said that the (not good) MSM are accountable to a standard of ethics and accountability that the (good) non MSM aren’t Pat.

I believe that all news outlets are biased and it’s only a matter of degree as to how much. IMO the BBC is one of the more ethical outlets and those who argue against that generally do because of political bias against it being a public broadcaster more than anything substantive.

  46. Thankfully he wasn’t successful. Credit to the Port Authority cops who wrestled him down. One wonders if the Administration is taking steps not only to prevent ebtry by terrorists, but to see who has already come in. This mope has been here since 2011.

  47. As respects global reach, and the quality of global reporting, no broadcast or print/web ( they’re all merging now ) media touches the BBC.

As respects a weekly news magazine, IMO no one touches The Economist.

The UK media is not doing too bad with those two.

  48. I peruse the BBC it’s not my primary read all though I do hit it several times a week. Your wording wasn’t crystal clear Paul… at least not to me.

As for accuracy of the so called MSM I give you Friday when CNN ran a Fake News story for 12hrs spreading all over the globe.

    https://theintercept.com/2017/12/09/the-u-s-media-yesterday-suffered-its-most-humiliating-debacle-in-ages-now-refuses-all-transparency-over-what-happened/

but these are the people we’re supposed to trust

  49. So a Bangladeshi then, who spent ages planning to kill infidels, and all he blew up was his own cock. Not an impressive standard of future doctors and engineers, is it?

I dunno, but each passing day suggests the the West can do better than import primitives.

  50. The winner of the Fake News Trophy is Fox News in a landslide!

I can speak for all here at ATW in congratulating Fox News on the great victory.

    http://www.businessinsider.com/rasmussen-poll-trump-fake-news-trophy-fox-news-2017-11

The polling firm President Donald Trump once praised as “one of the most accurate in the 2016 Election” just found that the winner of his proposed “FAKE NEWS TROPHY” is Fox News, according to a survey released Thursday.

That firm, right-leaning Rasmussen, asked 1,000 likely US voters which major network they would choose as winner “if the broadcast media established an annual Fake News Trophy.” Respondents were allowed to choose between ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, NBC, or another network.

Of those surveyed, 40% said Fox News should be the winner of the first annual “Fake News Trophy.” Coming in second place was CNN with 25% support. The network was followed by MSNBC with 9%, ABC with 4%, CBS with 3%, and NBC with 2%. Another 6% said the award should go to another network while 11% were undecided.

  51. I’m glad to hear that there were apparently no fatalities and only four injured in this attack. (Obviously that’s still four too many). All I mean is, it could have been worse, glad it wasn’t.
Often, these one-man attackers seem to be amateurs acting off their own bat, in the sense that, although they’re motivated by Islamist ideology, they’re not part of a military organisation…or at least, not a very structured one.

I don’t understand Islam. I can just about conceive that religious mania could drive a man to kill others, but to willingly take your own life in the process? I can’t get my head around the amount of brainwashing that would be needed to make me feel my own life is of no account. Even though I don’t like the presence of Islam in my country and I feel that it shouldn’t be here, I still feel sorry for its followers in a way.

  52. But these are the people we’re supposed to trust

    Indeed.

    This from the Breitbart article:

The first public place where there was a public exposure potentially [to measles] was the Masjid Al-Noor Mosque on April 15,” Dr. Alisa Haushalter, Director of the Shelby County Health Department, tells Breitbart News

The mosque is one location we know that individuals who were infectious were during their infectious period, but that’s not necessarily where the first case occurred. I don’t want you to draw conclusions without sufficient information

    The headline of the article?

Measles Outbreak in Memphis Began at Mosque

    http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2016/05/10/measles-outbreak-memphis-began-mosque/

The crude propaganda outlet Breitbart are best left to those who wish to confirm their own prejudices (which is what they exist for)

  53. //“You will no doubt agree, PVR, that people outside America often know more about the US than Americans do.

Patty, you’re the perfect case in point.

  54. Something has to be done…….

    https://www.rt.com/news/412744-cancer-patient-raped-india/

A 14-year-old cancer patient was raped twice within a period of just a few hours on Saturday night in Lucknow, northern India. The girl was assaulted by two youths, and then later by a passerby to whom she had turned for help.

The teen left home to buy groceries from a nearby market at around 4.30pm on Saturday. While the girl, who has early-stage blood cancer, was on her way, an acquaintance told her that he would drop her to the market on his bike, police said. But he instead took her to an abandoned bridge, where he and one of his friends raped her and left her on the roadside, a local law enforcement officer said, as cited by the Indian Express.

This was not the end of her ordeal. As she was trying to get home following the first incident, a 38-year-old man identified as Virendra Yada happened to be passing by on a bike. He volunteered to help her and give her a lift home. The girl agreed, but the suspect “took the minor to the roadside, raped her and left her there” – again.

We just cannot continue to tolerate things like this happening in the third world.

It is our fault that it happens, because of colonial times.

And the only solution is clear: they all have to go live in London or New York, or Dublin.

  55. No Allan, you’ve got that confused I’m afraid.

Colonialism is largely why you have the concept of ‘British Asians’ and places like the ‘British West Indies’ historical events and concepts such as the Boer War, Rhodesia and consequently large numbers of people from the West Indies and the Asian and African continent backgrounds in Britain.

There, that wasn’t too difficult to understand was it?

  56. Let’s look at real fake news…..

    https://www.politico.com/story/2017/12/09/trump-cnn-wikileaks-288628

On Friday, in a story billed as an “exclusive,” CNN originally reported that Trump Jr., President Trump and other top Trump campaign officials received an email offer from a man named Michael J. Erickson of a website and decryption key for hacked DNC documents. The timing of the message is crucial as CNN reported Erickson sent the email Sept. 4, 2016, which would have been before WikiLeaks begin releasing another batch of stolen emails on Sept. 13. After The Washington Post reported the correct date was Sept. 14, meaning the email was referencing a batch of already-released documents, CNN and other outlets corrected their reports.

A CNN spokesperson previously told POLITICO that the reporters involved in the latest correction, Manu Raju and Jeremy Herb, would not be disciplined.

“There will not be any disciplinary action taken because every procedure put in place as part of the editorial process was followed,” the spokesperson said. “People don’t get fired at CNN for making a mistake. They get fired when they don’t follow editorial procedures.”

And these ‘reporters’ followed editorial procedures which includes specifically NOT verifying a story if it would harm the Trump administration.

    Oh – here’s another……

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/arts-and-entertainment/wp/2017/12/03/abc-news-apologizes-for-serious-error-in-trump-report-suspends-brian-ross-for-four-weeks/?utm_term=.6d7f42238524

And Wapo doesn’t want to be left out of the faking frenzy

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/10/us/politics/trump-dave-weigel.html

Now, where are the examples of ‘fake’ Fox News?

  57. Paul – where were the British colonies in India, the West Indies, Nigeria etc? Indeed, where were the Swedish colonies in these locations? As we now know, many areas of Sweden have now been colonised so, if you are stating that the UK is getting ‘payback from way back’ then how to explain the disaster of Sweden?

  58. There, that wasn’t too difficult to understand was it?

A report by counter-extremism think tank Quilliam has found that more than eight out of ten men convicted of grooming gang offences have an ‘Asian’ background.

When the study’s authors — both of whom are of Pakistani heritage — set out on their research into grooming gangs, they expected to “debunk” the perception that Muslims of Asian heritage are overrepresented.

But instead their analysis revealed that 222 of 264 convictions related to 58 cases of grooming gangs identified in Britain between 2005 and 2017 — or 84 per cent — involved perpetrators of Asian origin, despite Asians making up just 7 per cent of the population.

The report found just 18 of the 264 offenders (7 per cent) were white, while 22 were black (8 per cent), and the ethnicities of a further two men were unknown.

Because………colonialism. Easy 🙂 That’s why British teenage girls get gang-raped by pakis

  59. Oops – link. I don’t want to be accused of ‘fake news’

    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2017/12/10/84-grooming-gangs-asian-report/

  60. Paul – where were the British colonies in India, the West Indies, Nigeria etc?

    Seriously?

The British Raj for almost a hundred years? The British Nigeria Protectrate for over fifty years? The British West Indies beginning in the seventeenth century with various remanants lasting to the present day?

How to explain the disaster of Sweden?

What about Sweden in British colonial history?

I can’t explain definitively but I’d say it’s down to domestic immigration policy so I’d suggest that rather than be outraged on behalf of Swedes and ask rhetorical questions to an Irishman living in southern Europe about immigration in Scandanavia why not leave the multi culti hell hole that is Aberdeen and immediately get on a plane and use your oraclesque wisdom in educating those dastardly Swedes where they’re going wrong?

Because………colonialism. Easy 🙂 That’s why British teenage girls get gang-raped by pakis

No, British girls are preyed on by organised sex gangs because sexual predators are pieces of vile, filthy shit irrespective of race or ethnicity. The reason that there are large communities of ‘Pakis’, (and people of Indian, and Jamican and Kenyan etc background), in Britain is that if you insist on strutting around the world teling others how great you are, (not to mention imposing your language, plundering natural resources, introducing them to cricket (shudder)), then it’s normal that the natives are going to want to go to the motherland of civilisation, milk and honey.

But sure just blame it all on (((them))) anyway.

  61. Seriously?

The British Raj for almost a hundred years? The British Nigeria Protectrate for over fifty years? The British West Indies beginning in the seventeenth century with various remanants lasting to the present day?

Paul – In Canada, Australia, NZ, Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth, Salisbury (now Harare) one sees that Britons moved to those places and created cities and the civilisation where they lived and worked. There are none in Nigeria because it’s impossible, and none in the Indian sub-continent because there were already natives who had their own cities.

As for why there should be anybody from the 3rd-world should be in the UK or Europe, your ‘explanation’ suffers gross insufficiency. So, for clarification, why should Somalis, Ethiopians, Afghans, Africans as a whole, and other 3rd-worlders be in the UK in record numbers 50 years AFTER the demise of the British Empire?

British girls are preyed on by organised sex gangs because sexual predators are pieces of vile, filthy shit irrespective of race or ethnicity.

Yes – but they just happen to be pakis. That is a fact

  62. Great news phantom love it fake news awards winner fox news voted by fox news audience

  63. Paul – In Canada, Australia, NZ, Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth, Salisbury (now Harare) one sees that Britons moved to those places and created cities and the civilisation where they lived and worked.

So? That has nothing whatsoever to do with the question about where the British colonies were regarding my explanation of large numbers of people from a southern Asian. African and West Indies background in Britain.

So, for clarification, why should Somalis, Ethiopians, Afghans, Africans as a whole, and other 3rd-worlders be in the UK in record numbers 50 years AFTER the demise of the British Empire?

For clarification a lot of those are second and third generation British born from British subjects. As to newer arrivals I suggest you contact the UK Visas and Immigration Office as as an Irishman living in southern Europe how could I possibly answer your (very very loaded) question?

Yes – but they just happen to be pakis. That is a fact

    Well, perhaps most?

    http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-34219235

  64. Terrorists Family is Mad at the Cops….. not their son

    https://nypost.com/2017/12/11/family-of-port-authority-bombing-suspect-is-outraged-at-investigators-tactics/

  65. “We have every confidence that our justice system will find the truth behind this attack and that we will in the end be able learn what occurred today.”

    Nice family.

And on the day that their own family member attempted this trocity, they bring a truther comment into it too. They’re just asking questions.

    Lock them up.

  66. no just deport them

  67. But we’re also outraged by the behavior of the law enforcement officials who held children as small as 4 years old out in the cold and who pulled a teenager out of high school classes to interrogate him without lawyer, without his parents

I don’t know what the basis of the complaints that this guy’s family may or may not have but from this above the first incident seems excessive while the second I suspect would certainly be illegal.

    Lock them up.

    No, just deport them

    Bit knee jerk there lads?

Uless they’ve committed a crime or are in the country illegally you won’t be able to do either.

  68. They used CAIR as their spokesman….. that proves to me that they anti-american. I don’t believe anyone who is anti-american should be allowed to immigrate here.

  69. Pat, you can believe what you wish, the laws in America are not based on personal subjectivity

  70. Lets see if they’re illegals.

  71. Paul I’m not saying that there is any legal basis for tossing this family out. What I’m saying is the ungrateful bastards came to my country for a better life than they had in Bangladesh.

My country has opened it’s doors to them and they have been free to be billionaires or paupers their choice. The thank you these people give us is a fuck you and a kid that tries to murder us….

People like that are the reason we shouldn’t allow 90% of the people who show up at our door in. I don’t believe people who have anything but praise for this country should be allowed in, period….. you want to bad mouth our society well stay in the hell hole you’re in and do it. Don’t come and use our benefits and then say how terrible we are.

The US in it’s past has shut all immigration down for periods as long as 20 years. It’s time to do that again.

  72. Bangladesh should have been on the travel ban list

There are plenty of jihadis there and there will be more with the Burma thing going on

  73. What I’m saying is the ungrateful bastards came to my country for a better life than they had in Bangladesh.

I understand that sentiment Pat but what I mean is that this family are now in emotional turmoil that their family member seems to be a wannabe mass Jihadi murderer. I think that for the time being at least the old adage of the sins of the parents not being visited on the children should apply here.

    Lets see if they’re illegals.

    If they are deport away.

  74. I would be more sympathetic to the emotions they were going through if they didn’t use a terrorist organisation as their spokesperson.

By using CAIR I think that the family provides reason to drag everyone of them in for questioning as enemy combatants.

  75. Do 3rd-worlders have some kind of right to come to any country in the developped world ‘for a better life’? The fact that the Trump administration has specifically rejected the UN’s policy that anybody should live anywhere for any reason should herald a new policy of repatriation of the 3rd-worlders who, inevitably, bring the 3rd-world with them wherever they go. Who among us wants to live in the 3rd-world?

  76. Pat, CAIR are legal in the US hence they are not terrorists.

As I said previously, law isn’t dependent on your personal subjectivity.

  77. They are the mouth piece of radical islam in the US. They represent the terrorists.

If you pick them to speak for you, you are declaring your support for islamic terror. Add that to the fact that one of your family just tried to commit a suicide terror attack in the middle of the morning rush hour in NYC.

You are admitting you are our enemy to the United States and should be treated as enemy combatants period.

  78. Don’t disagree.

Boy did they hook up with CAIR pretty quick.

  79. CAIR is the legal arm of muslim violence. I’m sure that there’s a similar set-up in Ireland; what was it now…….?

Anyway, it looks as though there’s a man in the White House, finally.

    https://www.rt.com/usa/412798-trump-chain-migration-terrorist-attack/

In the wake of the botched NYC terrorist attack, President Donald Trump has called for an end to the so-called “chain migration” and told Congress to act in order to thwart future incidents like the one carried out in a tunnel in midtown Manhattan.

Chain migration – every country really needs that, as if…..

  80. I disagree with Trump on so many things but he has the moral high ground on this matter.

  81. If you pick them to speak for you, you are declaring your support for islamic terror. Add that to the fact that one of your family just tried to commit a suicide terror attack in the middle of the morning rush hour in NYC.

You are admitting you are our enemy to the United States and should be treated as enemy combatants period

I don’t know enough about the organisation,(and couldn’t be bothered chasing it up),to give an informed comment Pat although I have to say, if what you say is true I’m surprised that the US would let such a group legally operate within its territory.

I’m sure that there’s a similar set-up in Ireland; what was it now…….?

    The Northern Ireland Office.

  82. I’m surprised that the US would let such a group legally operate within its territory.

Freedom of Speech if you want to advocate for terrorists by the spoken word that’s perfectly legal. CAIR was embraced by the Obama Administration even though they were proven to be an un-indicted co-conspirator in a terror case.

They have the right to preach their values as long as they don’t engage in violence.

  83. http://www.nationalreview.com/article/221895/coming-clean-about-cair-scott-w-johnson

  84. Phantom, that article uses the term ‘unindicted co – conspirator’ a lot and I really have no idea what it’s trying to say. It’s my experience that if people are involved in criminal conspiracies if there is sufficient evidence they are charged if not they are not.

They have the right to preach their values as long as they don’t engage in violence.

As they’re not engaging in violence then by definition they’re not ‘terrorists’?

  85. The National Review is a sober publication.

    I dunno.
