1778 – Captain Cook becomes the first European to set foot in the Hawaiian Islands.  Cook was to make another two trips to the archipelago before being ambushed and killed by the natives a little over a year later.

1788 – Britain establishes a penal settlement at Botany Bay in Australia.

1967 – In the USA Albert DeSalvo, the ‘Boston Strangler’?, is sentenced to life in prison.  To this day lingering doubts remain as to whether DeSalvo was indeed the Boston Strangler.

1985 – Irish actor Wilfred Brambell, famous for playing Albert Steptoe in the classic BBC comedy Steptoe and Son, dies at the age of 74.

1985 – US officials walk out of a World Court case concerning US ‘paramilitary’ activities against the Nicaraguan government.

1991 – The Israeli cities of Tel Avia and Haifa come under attack from Iraqi Scud missiles during the Gulf War.

    John Hume’s 70th Birthday – and of course Andrew and David will want to wish him many happy returns 😉
