    😏

  3. lol

  4. Troll –

Maybe a bit of comment will induce others to do likewise. What happened then anyway?

  5. I don’t know some japanese got lost and had road rage…….

  6. The interesting question, never settled, is did the Brits have intelligence of the attack before it happened and didn’t share it in order to ensure that Uncle Sam joined the war.

  7. there is some debate that FDR had that intel also……

I think they had it but didn’t believe it.

  8. There were conspiracy theories that FDR knew.

  9. Same. Thought

There had been fears of an attack, that is true

  10. here is an article you might find interesting Peter about Churchill and Dec 7

  11. We won’t ever know the truth about Pearl Harbour until Allan tells us 😉

  12. FDR seized Japanese assets and cut off its oil supplies. That’s how it was goaded into an attack which was well known in advance, all the way to FDR’s desk. This is now beyond dispute.

  13. “FDR seized Japanese assets and cut off its oil supplies. That’s how it was goaded into an attack which was well known in advance, all the way to FDR’s desk. This is now beyond dispute.” Why does this matter? They are still guilty of the attack. If FDR goaded them, he brought forth the inevitable.

  14. Yes Patrick. There is also evidence that Curchill allowed the Germans to bomb Coventry in November 1940:

“It has been claimed in a number of books that the wartime prime minister knew that the city was to be targeted by the German Luftwaffe, but chose to do nothing because it would have alerted Adolf Hitler to the fact the Allies had recently cracked the Nazis’ top-secret Enigma codes.

Coventry and its people were sacrificed, the theory goes, “for the greater good” – that is, that the benefits of playing the long game outweighed the short-term costs of leaving the West Midlands city to a terrible fate…”

    Ain’t that the truth.

  16. FDR seized Japanese assets and cut off its oil supplies.

Yes Pete, but FDR was acting in response to Japanese aggression in China, Singapore etc. Japan was the clear aggressor, not the USA:

“A series of events led to the attack on Pearl Harbor. War between Japan and the United States had been a possibility that each nation’s military forces planned for in the 1920s, though real tension did not begin until the 1931 invasion of Manchuria by Japan. Over the next decade, Japan expanded slowly into China, leading to the Second Sino-Japanese war in 1937. In 1940 Japan invaded French Indochina in an effort to embargo all imports into China, including war supplies purchased from the U.S. This move prompted the United States to embargo all oil exports, leading the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) to estimate it had less than two years of bunker oil remaining and to support the existing plans to seize oil resources in the Dutch East Indies. Planning had been underway for some time on an attack on the “Southern Resource Area” to add it to the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere Japan envisioned in the Pacific.

The Philippines, at that time an American territory, were also a Japanese target. The Japanese military concluded an invasion of the Philippines would provoke an American military response. Rather than seize and fortify the islands, and wait for the inevitable U.S. counterattack, Japan’s military leaders instead decided on the preventive Pearl Harbor attack, which they assumed would negate the American forces needed for the liberation and reconquest of the islands…”

Well, yes – and Peter agreed. Strange, but so is Peter…..

Interesting link Alan. It has also been alleged that Churchill had intelligence that the Japanese were about to attack the USA but chose not to share it.

As for Roosevelt, it is hard to believe that he deliberately allowed the fleet to be destroyed. As always, cockup is more likely than conspiracy.

A “cock-up”? Moving the oldest, out-dated battleships into a target row and keeping the aircraft carriers out of the way is not a cock-up but a plan which was followed.

  18. I knew Allan would come up trumps. He never disappoints 🙂
