Background for Tonight’s address

By Patrick Van Roy On January 8th, 2019

Tonight President Trump will address the Nation from the Oval Office.  It is believed the speech will be in regards to The Wall and the Middle East.

Here is a framing of the wall side of the debate, please pay close attention to the comments from Obama’s Head of the Border Patrol Mark Morgan who was fired by Trump. His segment starts at 2:50, but the whole 13 min. is well worth the watch.

  1. Tucker Carlson gives indigestion. He does not give positive arguments for a wall or dispute the position that there is no crisis other than a humanitarian one that Trump himself caused. Mark Morgan does not either. It is outrageous that Trump is commanding the airwaves for his political stunt. Shame on the networks for dropping their journalistic values and broadcasting this stunt this evening.

  2. “Liberals say walls are racist”?

    Where do liberals say this?

  3. if you watch the clip you’ll see

  4. NYr the crises was caused by Obama

  5. NY

It is likely to be a partisan speech, which is why giving the other side equal time is highly recommended.

  6. Pelosi has said several times that a wall would be “immoral”.

  7. “if you watch the clip you’ll see”

No there isn’t. The guy said building “this wall” will be a monument to white nationalism. He did not say “walls are racist”.

  8. Immoral. Not racist.

  9. In fact if you google “walls are racist” the top results are Tucker Carlson. So no one seems to be saying that “walls are racist” other than Tucker Carlson.

  10. The wall would not be immoral.

There is no right to illegal immigration by anyone.

The only proper questions are does it work, is it cost effective, is it ugly, does it divide people’s lands etc.

But saying ” its immoral ” is baby talk by game players.

  11. PVR

“NYr the crises was caused by Obama”. Trump changed the policies from Obama’s. Obama did not have children separated from their parents, or children murdered. It started with Trump’s “Zero Tolerance” orders. Trump most certainly caused the disgraceful humanitarian situation on the border. Do you recall concentration camps for childrfen under Obama?

  12. “The wall would not be immoral.”

Yes and no. Firstly, as you say there is no right to illegal immigration. However there are more appropriate ways of dealing with it. No one is suggesting, for example, building one along the US-Canadian border.

To build a wall, especially as it is unlikely to actually have much impact on illegal immigration, is a giant symbol saying to quite a large number of Americans that people like them are so bad that the US needed to build a 2000 mile wall to keep them out.

  13. PVR, If people would just listen to Mr. Morgan at 2:50 in the clip, I think some minds would be changed.

    Phantom, totally agree!

  14. Maybe it’s a resignation speech. A late Christmas present to the world? 😀

  15. Obama did not have children separated from their parents

that’s a lie he started the policy. The pictures of the children in dog cages was from the Obama Administration.

    or children murdered.

NO CHILD HAS BEEN MURDERED BY THE BORDER PATROL, TRUMP, or BORDER POLICY….. that my friend demotes you to truly brainwashed liberal ASS!.

Beyond that point I won’t even bother to read…. you aught to be ashamed of yourself.

  16. “If people would just listen to Mr. Morgan at 2:50 in the clip, I think some minds would be changed.”

I listened to him. He didn’t actually say anything. He didn’t put forward any actual arguments, nor debunk other arguments. He just said he thinks there should be a wall and can’t think of a reason why there shouldn’t be one.

  17. “NO CHILD HAS BEEN MURDERED BY THE BORDER PATROL, TRUMP, or BORDER POLICY….. that my friend demotes you to truly brainwashed liberal ASS!.”

Maybe not murder. Negligent homicide maybe.

  18. No one is suggesting, for example, building one along the US-Canadian border.

    Canada isn’t the problem, Seamus.

That comment is like saying that the police are prejudiced because they only arrest the crooks.

  19. The charge of homicide is far more accurately assessed to the parents and the coyotes that brought the kids to the border.

  20. “That comment is like saying that the police are prejudiced because they only arrest the crooks.”

Nope. The comment is saying that the police are prejudiced if they only arrest crooks who are brown. Which would be true.

  21. “The charge of homicide is far more accurately assessed to the parents and the coyotes that brought the kids to the border.”

The children were in US custody. At that point they become the responsibility of the United States to see to their welfare until they leave US jurisdiction. So the failure to give them medication, the failure to give them adequate water etc… is the fault of the United States.

  22. Dr. Seamus

Do you have any more medical assessments for us today?

  23. Seamus, the fact that Mr. Morgan was with the Border Patrol and FBI for 20 years, not to mention being fired by Trump, speaks volumes to his expertise on the subject. Also the fact that his politics was not mentioned means that he’s not some political hack.

He also stated that he spent most of his time in y hometown of El Paso, where we have a wall, speaks to his knowledge on the subject.

    Build the wall!!

  24. Seamus there is a whole section on the racism charge right after the immoral one.

Sorry you are also totally wrong on your data. Where the wall exists in each of those regions it dropped illegal crossing in that zone 90% and it’s documented. The Obama border guy that was replaced even says it works.

Legal Latin Americans support a crackdown on ILLEGALS a story you don’t hear much. Because of the illegal problem they are asked 5th 6th generation “you a legal”? If you don’t think it upsets them you’re wrong.

We need a flow between the two countries it’s the way the continent has functioned long before and will in the future, but we can not in today’s day an age have one illegal in this country work visa, greencard, fingerprints, and dna or get the f out.

  25. Wrong Phantom Canada is a problem an so is Europe but the difference is we tend to be white and not an easily identifiable minority that allows nation prejudices.

How many of those Manhattan sky scrapers are full of illegal immigrants but not the dangerous brown kind

  26. Canada is not the same magnitude of a problem

If you become a problem, I’ll order a wall built along the US/Canada border and we’ll make Manitoba pay for it.

  27. “Seamus, the fact that Mr. Morgan was with the Border Patrol and FBI for 20 years, not to mention being fired by Trump, speaks volumes to his expertise on the subject. Also the fact that his politics was not mentioned means that he’s not some political hack.”

He still didn’t advance any arguments. It’s an appeal to authority. This guy has done this job so he knows what he is talking about. Sure give him credit where credit is due. He still didn’t advance any arguments. Just asked us to to take his word for it.

“Where the wall exists in each of those regions it dropped illegal crossing in that zone 90% and it’s documented. “

Sure because they will go around it. Which no matter how big it is they will go around it. Are the total numbers dropping because in this area or that area have dropped? No.

You’ll just get a lot more people doing it by boat.

  28. If you become a problem, I’ll order a wall built along the US/Canada border and we’ll make Manitoba pay for it.

And get the Israelis to build it.

They are pretty good at it.

  29. The Israeli wall has worked well in stopping the worst of the Arab terrorism.

    Sometimes, walls are necessary

  30. “The Israeli wall has worked well in stopping the worst of the Arab terrorism.”

Except it hasn’t. Israel shouted about it for a decade about how important it would to preventing attacks. Since it was completed they have stopped shouting about it, while attacks have continued.

There has been a decline in suicide bombings. But then there have also been a decline in suicide bombings against Israeli settlements on the far side of the Barrier. It’s also estimated that nearly 55% of Palestinians who cross the Barrier do so illegally.

Israel’s wall hasn’t been that effective.

  31. Seamus, Agreed, it would be interesting to have Morgan flesh out his arguments. He seems to know what he is talking about.

  32. Israel’s wall hasn’t been that effective.

Imagine what it would be like without one.

  33. “Imagine what it would be like without one.”

Not too different. Because Israel’s wall hasn’t been that effective.

  34. There has been a decline in suicide bombings.

That was the point of the Israeli wall

The death toll there for the three years of 2001-2003 were 207, 452, and 208.

For 2016-2018, it was 90, 34 and 6. Still way too high, but off the charts better than it was.

It’s not only successful, its off the charts beyond wildest dreams succesful

    http://www.johnstonsarchive.net/terrorism/terrisraelsum.html

  35. “Seamus, Agreed, it would be interesting to have Morgan flesh out his arguments. He seems to know what he is talking about.”

It would be. It’s hard to support a guy when he doesn’t argue anything. And it’s hard to argue with a guy when he doesn’t argue anything.

  36. Seamus.

If it saves one Jewish life, it would be worth it.

  37. That is an 85% reduction in the Isreali terror death toll over three year periods before wall, and now.

If there is an 85% reduction in illegal crossings, I’ll take that result.

  38. “There has been a decline in suicide bombings.”

Both in Israel and in the West Bank. Both in areas protected by the wall and areas not protected by the wall. How is the wall successfully ending suicide bombings in areas not protected by the wall?

The decline absolutely had nothing to do with the ending of the Second Intifada.

  39. Seamus

Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

    No solution is perfect

But that Israeli wall comes close enough

  40. The Israeli wall is only one tool that has been used

Give those guys a little credit, tip your hat to them and say ” well done ! “

  41. Canada has it’s own problems with the boy who wants to be king, but they offer no threat on canadians over running us for jobs or flooding us with their drugs. Just the opposite on that one the hells angels and pagen motorcycle clubs have flooded Canada with meth.

  42. Except it doesn’t. The decline in suicide bombings has little if anything to do with the wall. As stated nearly 55% of Palestinians who cross from the West Bank to Israel (through the barrier) do so illegally. If they can’t keep them out to work how can they keep them out to blow stuff up.

Additionally if the decline in suicide bombings was caused by the wall there would be a distinction. Suicide bombings in Israel would be down but suicide bombings in the West Bank would be at the same level. That hasn’t happened. Suicide bombings in the West Bank have dropped by a similar rate.

The reason behind it is several fold. Firstly the movement of Fatah away from violence against Israel. The bulk of the suicide bombings in the period you mentioned were by Fatah. They now largely support engagement with the Israelis. Secondly the IDF have got better at disrupting suicide bombings long before they get to their target.

  43. The ‘except it doesn’t’ is in response to Phantom’s “But that Israeli wall comes close enough”.

  44. It would be. It’s hard to support a guy when he doesn’t argue anything. And it’s hard to argue with a guy when he doesn’t argue anything.

He was high ranking FBI for the last 5yrs of his 20yr history in the FBI and was then political enough to get a high appointment in CBP by Obama…

In other words he’s an active party democrat and he didn’t mention politics because he is speaking out of ranks but feels things need to be said, and he said every way he could without saying it “Build the Wall” and he walked the edge not to offend either side perfectly.

  45. ” he said every way he could without saying it “Build the Wall” and he walked the edge not to offend either side perfectly.”

By not actually saying anything. He offered no reason to build it.

  46. you don’t speak politician for someone who’s worked for them……

  47. hey Phantom how’s the commie going to pay for this?????

    https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/new-york-bill-de-blasio-health-care_us_5c34cb9ee4b05d4e96bcec99

  48. He doesn’t make an argument. He supports the wall but in no way advances why.

And if he is a politician then why should we give him any more credence on the subject than any other politician?

  49. The walls in Belfast were pretty effective.

  50. PVR

I think that universal health care as done by a city is the wrong way to do it for a bunch of reasons.

    And illegals too. Great.

  51. “The walls in Belfast were pretty effective.”

    At what?

  52. //Tonight President Trump will address the Nation//

    Trump? Address?

But I suppose it makes a change from trying to undress half the nation.

//The Israeli wall is only one tool that has been used//

As mad as Trump is, at least he isn’t suggesting his wall should be built across Mexico.

  53. Seamus, on January 8th, 2019 at 5:58 PM Said:
“The walls in Belfast were pretty effective.”

    At what?

    Peace Walls.

    Apparently.

  54. Yes that is what they are called. What are the effective at?

  55. because he’s a politician with actual job expertise. Expertise in federal crimes in the #1 region of the country with the highest percentage of federal crimes committed by illegals. Then who actually worked not pushing paper but arranging that men and patrols were applied the most efficiently.

He’s a democrat, he’s young, if he expects to use his connections to ever get a job he can’t come out and say that the only reason the reason the dems are against it is to screw Trump.

This is not meant as an offense…. Every American understood exactly what he was saying by not saying….. never forget my friend we are one people not only separated by an ocean but by a common language.

  56. Seamus.

Did the Peace Walls reduce violence?

  57. Trump will announce that Mexico has agreed to fully fund the wall and that construction begins on February 1.

  58. “He’s a democrat, he’s young, if he expects to use his connections to ever get a job he can’t come out and say that the only reason the reason the dems are against it is to screw Trump.”

Except he did say that. It was one of the few things he actually did say.

What he didn’t say was why the wall was a good thing. He didn’t say why it would work. He didn’t say why they should build it.

He just said there was no argument against it – and that people are only opposing it because of Trump.

“Did the Peace Walls reduce violence?”

    No.

I don’t see how can work at that level let alone be paid for.

  61. Every sick person with no money in America will come here if there is no ” waiting period “

  62. It will be interesting to see if the numbers hold up to scrutiny. Treating 600,000 uninsured people with $100 million seems a little suspect. That’s about $165 per uninsured person. If that was US wide it would only be $4.5 billion. That seems ludicrously low.

If the $100 million figure is true then it is achievable. New York City’s budget is nearly $90 billion.

But the $100 million seems really, really low.

  63. ahhh automation…..

Oops! Autonomous robot struck and ‘killed’ by a self-driving Tesla in Las Vegas ahead of CES
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-6566655/Oops-Autonomous-robot-struck-killed-self-driving-Tesla-Las-Vegas-ahead-CES.html

  64. Primary care doctors are overworked and stressed out now, nationally. I am sure that this is the case locally too.

And there will be some new monster bureaucracy to administer this, something separate and apart from state and federal systems? A new complexity to what is already way too complicated?

  65. The walls in Belfast were pretty effective.

    HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

  66. It is reported that the Homeland Security Department had a study conducted on how best to protect the southern border. They refuse to release it. Perhaps the study does not recommend throwing children in a concentration camp. Perhaps it does not recommend a concrete wall. Perhaps it does not recommend using Army troops. One wonders why Trump does not release the study which was paid for with public funds.

I’ll leave it at that and taunt you no further 🙂

  70. Paul

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzz

    😀

  71. Seamus

Did you watch the feet ball match last night?

Not the result I might have expected. An old fashioned whipping.

  72. The basketball I’m assuming? I imagine you aren’t talking about the Wolves Liverpool game.

I didn’t see it. I normally start getting more into basketball after the NFL season is over. So February onwards. I normally just watch highlights of the Celtics games up until then.

Celtics look good this year, but its hard to see anyone topping Golden State.

  73. Top flight college football can be hugely interesting. Very many here find it more interesting than the NFL.

And last night, the mighty Alabama fell down hard. To a Clemson whose QB is all of 19 years of age, and as cool and collected as you will ever wish to be.

    https://www.keyt.com/sports/legend-building-for-clemson-qb-trevor-lawrence/970825488

  74. ha ha bama got blown out

  75. Right. Didn’t click on. Thought it was an autocorrect.

I don’t really follow college football if I’m being honest. Normally only start really watch in it when I’m watching highlights in the lead up to the Draft.

For some reason I thought college football was on Saturdays. Did they move it to avoid a clash with the playoffs in the NFL?

A true freshman winning a national championship does seem like quite the achievement. I might see if I can find the game and watch it. Seems like a good game. Alabama are a damn good college and Nick Saban is one of those crazy genius types. So for them to lose, never mind lose heavily is surprising.

  76. The NFL and College football try to stay out of one another’s way.

There have always I think been some games not on Saturday, and this one was probably on Monday to have the country’s attention on a non NFL day.

This kid apparently started all four years in high school. He already has a ton of experience. He was relaxed and smiling out between plays, cool as a cucumber.

  77. Canada isn’t the same magnitude of problem because we only have 36 million citizens to begin with plus we have 5000 miles of access so we don’t all form up in a caravan

  78. So why do you want a wall if noone lives there?

  79. We don’t but if it was just about every illegal immigrants then there are probably atleast 25% that are white/european/Canadian/australian

Ireland alone estimates they have 100,000 illegals living in the US extrapolate some numbers

  80. EP

    I doubt those numbers

  81. As mahons mentioned a few days ago, it appears that the number of illegal Irish has decreased significantly over the last couple of decades. I knew some of them.

I’ve not heard of any illegal Canadians, Germans, French, etc though I am sure that there are some.

  82. Why would significant numbers of Aussies / Kiwis / Canadians come to the US as illegals and have all the hassle of that life? Those are rich countries, not remotely the same as El Salvador or Mexico, etc.

I could see eastern Europeans doing it, but again, I don’t sense that there are any vast numbers of them living here illegally

  83. A little googling and it seems there are a number of Canadian here illegally. Interesting.

  84. I used to have an older Newfoundlander couple next door to me in Brooklyn

NYC used to have a sizable Newfie population, and some Quebeckers.

  85. Bizarrely, Obama funded a border wall – but it was in Tunisia and was to ensure that Afros were funnelled into Libya and on to the Med and Europe

    https://intelligencebriefs.com/us-to-fund-24-9-million-electronic-security-surveillance-on-the-tunisia-libya-security-wall/

March 29, 2016: The United States has agreed to fund the multi-million-dollar project to install an electronic security surveillance system on Tunisia-Libyan border. The wall that Tunisia is erecting is set to keep off ISIS terrorists that have found haven in the neighboring Libya.

US Diplomatic mission to Tunisia said that the she would disburse the first installment of the $24.9 million project to strengthen the security along the frontier.

The US Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) awarded the contract to American construction group BTP and consulting and engineering firm AECOM.

  87. I thought the speech by the President was a good one. He’s keeping the lines of communication open with the Dems, and held back on any threats. He made the case for comprehensive border security.

  88. speech is up
