ATW FRIDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX

By Pete Moore On January 18th, 2019

Because Friday night is Music Night

I could do with a weekend without Brexit to be honest. In fact I could do with a couple of months without it. Like the eminent historian Andrew Roberts, I call on the useless Prime Minister to prorogue Parliament for ten weeks to protect the British people from those who would usurp our will. What I can’t do is a weekend without fat blokes beating up each other. Edinburgh vs Montpellier this evening will do nicely.

Did I mention that I love my Southern Rock? It’s the real soul music. So have some of this great tune. Have a good weekend, except Remoaners and, as always, feel to share your fav sounds down below –

  1. Y’all picked a good’un there Pete. It’s my Southland’s gift to the world!

  2. Long live Southern rock.

  3. Sir Charles, you’re right. The South’s cultural legacies are incredible, but its music alone is a truly great gift to the world.

  4. The South’s cultural legacies are incredible

Indeed, slavery and the Klan Jim Crow, to name but three.

  5. Anyway, here is the beautiful Sharleen Spiteri of Texas (Glasgow):

They just love talking about Democrats.

  7. Gnarls Barkley:

  8. There was slavery in a lot of places.

  9. I’ve always loved this track.

‘There’s a band playing on the radio,
And it’s drowning the sound of my tears.’

I knew what that was before I’d even finished reading the excerpt – excellent stuff.

Anyway, Jimmy Page did some laudable things after Led Zepp but they just didn’t last very long. This is a band called The Firm, with the great Paul Rodgers of Bad Company/Free. I saw them play Hammersmith Odeon in 1986 and this was the best track – Money Can’t Buy

Best singer ever. A voice of exceptional beauty

  11. Good pick Dave. Here is Bryan Ferry last year in Babylon Berlin

  12. Should have added it’s a dubbed Italian clip.

  13. Peter.

Thanks for posting that clip of Babylon Berlin mate.
Despite not being able to understand what they were saying, it looked quite compelling, I’ll have to see if I can get it with English subtitles.

Your music choice was also a good one. I’m a big Texas fan.

  14. For Peter. Some Neil Young that inspired the response from Lynard Skynard.

  15. Cheers Dave. Babylon Berlin is available on Sky Atlantic, in German with English subtitles.

It’s interesting that some countries will not accept subtitles, in this case Italy, but also Germany. I have seen John Wayne dubbed into German, yes really.

  16. Allan.

Your music choice was also most enjoyable.
I’ll have to try a few of their other tracks.

  17. Peter.

Cheers Dave. Babylon Berlin is available on Sky Atlantic, in German with English subtitles.

I just found two series on sockshare mate.
If you recommend it, I think I’ll give it a try.
The bit where the waitress was eavesdropping on the conversation was intriguing.

  18. For you Charles, All Along the Watchtower:

  19. Dave

    Yes, two seasons, highly recommended.

  20. This is one of the few, and probably only, areas where ATW personnel are almost united, for our musical tastes are excellent. On the subject of Dave’s Roxy Music, I recall being at school when this album came out. The cover was most distracting to young teenagers but this track was even moreso…….

I was sixteen when this dropped and it sounds just as fresh today……

  21. Peter, one of my all time favs! Thanks mate.

“let us not talk falsely now, the hour’s getting late.”

  22. Allan.

    An excellent choice mate.
I remember my dad getting this album when I was about 7 or 8.
I used to love looking at his album collection, because he was into bands like Yes and Tangerine dream, who had some fantastically artistic album covers.
I have to say, the cover of this album became my new favorite. Fnar fnar.

  23. best version of all along the watchtower

  27. Anyway, here is the beautiful Sharleen Spiteri of Texas

    She certainly is:

  28. The best scene from Amadeus:

  29. The ultimate compliment insult….. and other than the music the true signature of the movie…. That Laugh

  30. I could never see the appeal of Roxy Music

    me neither

  31. Nobody has to see the appeal of any act or type of music. It isn’t compulsory.

I have noticed a lot of great and passionate interest in music from ATW regulars and these music threads are a refreshing and interesting interlude to the normal rough and tumble of the politics here, but there is often a lot of music snobbery going on the comments on these posts – a tendency to display a false sense of audio appreciation superiority which is not much different to the same insistence on hawking a sense of political superiority promoted on our regular threads !

  32. Paul McMahon,

I could never see the appeal of Roxy Music but there is always the exception:

I don’t know Paul, you don’t like Simple minds, Dire Straits or Roxy music.
I think you’re just being elitist when it comes to popular music mate. 😁

Cheers for posting the Texas and Roxy music tracks. They both favourite tracks of mine.

    Another Roxy music classic.

  33. This Roxy Music hit was one of the really good pop songs of its time

I don’t know a whole lot about the rest of their work but this song is wonderful

  34. Phantom.

Another great Roxy music choice mate.
I’m singing along to these Roxy music classics when I make my lunch.

  35. They played love is the drug until our ears bled

  36. You can never play too much of a good song Patrick. 😁

  37. Patrick

    Who did ?

  38. I want an answer ? 🙂
