By Patrick Van Roy On February 3rd, 2019

On 3rd Feb 1959, 22-year-old Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens, aged 17, died in a plane crash shortly after takeoff from Clear Lake, Iowa. The pilot of the single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza was also killed.

  1. I was a junior in High School at the time. It was an earth-shattering tragidy to hear some of my favorite singers were wiped out. Today if it happened to a cartel of the 21st century pseudo-singers I wouldn’t so much as break a yawn.

  2. Waylon Jennings could have been on that flight. He was touring with them There was not enough room for everybody, so Waylon continued by car while the others took the flight

Jennings and the others joked about the possibility of a plane crash before, as young men will do.

There was always a bit of sadness about the great Jennings.

  3. Waylon Jennings speaks about it

  4. I always have to check cause it is hard to believe Holly was only 22. What a talent.

  5. Yes Mahons. It’s incredible to think that a 22 year old could come up with this:

  6. The day the music died. How sad fate can be RIP

  7. Phantom did you play the video…..

I know you enjoy this song as much as I do and are probably the only other one that knows it’s also about New Rochelle.

    it’s a great version

As for Buddy Holly he is one of the most forgotten true superstars of early rock n roll. Songs like Rave on and complete opposite ones like roller coaster,,,,, Holly was a gift.

  8. tragedy……

San Francisco — where drug addicts outnumber high school students

San Francisco has more drug addicts than it has students enrolled in its public high schools, the city Health Department’s latest estimates conclude.

There are about 24,500 injection drug users in San Francisco — that’s about 8,500 more people than the nearly 16,000 students enrolled in San Francisco Unified School District’s 15 high schools and illustrates the scope of the problem on the city’s streets.

It’s also an increase of about 2,000 serious drug users since 2012, the last time a study was done.

  9. I did play the video. I hadn’t seen it before, it was really good.

The BBC in-studio performances from the sixties and seventies were excellent.

I actually –did not– know that this song was about New Rochelle

    I do now!

    Thanks

  10. oh I thought we had discussed the New Rochelle aspect before…

We can learn somthing new everyday.
