THE INTRIGUING THING ABOUT TANK MAN

By Pete Moore On June 4th, 2019

Democracy protests broke out in Peking in the spring of 1989. Tienanmen Square was the focus and by May it was occupied by thousands of mainly young people. Thirty years ago today, on 4th June 1989, the socialist government had had enough. The Chinese army was ordered to clear the Square. It murdered hundreds, possibly thousands, of protesters, machine gunning them and running them over in tanks and armoured cars. The footage of Tank Man has always been astonishing. I have no idea what happened to him, whether or not he made it away, whether or not he survived. No-one has ever spoken about it or claimed to be involved.

What’s always intrigued me is that he’s holding carrier bags. He looks like he’s been shopping. I’ve always had it on mind that he popped out to buy a few things, saw a tank column on the way home and decided to make a stand.
