  1. Today we prepped 2 VFWs and an American Legion….

Wot on earth are you babbling on about Patrick. This little limey has no clue what this Yankee is saying 😉

  2. A VFW is a Veteran of Foreign Wars club a place where you have to be a veteran or a guest of a veteran to eat drink shoot pool, an American Legion is the same thing except you don’t have to be a veteran.

We set them up for big barbeques on thursday. Setup tables, grills giant buckets for iced beer and soda and brought a couple hundred of pounds of hot dogs and burgers. Add to that red white and blue bunting wallah a party.

We put the first two barbeques at the VFWs for veterans and their families all free. and we do another barbeque for the homeless and those suffering from addiction at the American Legion.

We do this several times a year.

  3. Thanks for the explanation Patrick. Good stuff and well done for all your efforts. Have a great day tomorrow 🙂

PS – I know its been about 240 years since “Yexit” – but if you have regrets, you can still rejoin the United Kingdom once we’ve sorted out our Brexit 😉

  4. nah we’ll pass, but thanks

  5. Trump has decided that the 4th of July celebration needed more Trump and more tanks.

  6. Fews, I don’t agree with the tanks bit. It’ll make Washington look like Red Square, not quite the message of freedom we want to send to the world.

  7. JFK had Tanks, Soldiers and Missiles in his 4th of July Parade……

  8. Patrick, did he really? I did not know that.

and the same with his inauguration parade they had tanks and missiles in that also. Could you imagine if Trump pulled that?

  12. It does not matter if JFK or any other president had tanks, it is not appropriate to the July 4th celebrations. July 4th is a time to think about the founding principles and celebrate that they prevailed to produce the great nations we have. It is not a time to celebrate military hardware. Also, in DC it should not be a political rally as is expected, it should be a non-partisan celebration for people of all political parties and opinions. Making it a partisan political rally is debasing July 4th.

  13. Tanks haven’t been part of US parades for a very long time.

Field Marshall Bone Spur wants to look tough, that’s all that this is.

  14. He got the idea from the Bastille day parade.

I saw it once back in the 90s and it was certainly very heavy on the military back then.

“Our laws for ourselves, foreign laws for the British.”

  16. I must agree with NYer. July 4th in Washington should be for all Americans, and not be turned into a Trump/Republican rally. The optics is bad, as well as the idea.

  17. Pete Moore

“Our laws for ourselves, foreign laws for the British.” – What do you mean by that?

  18. It is Pete trying to pretend that the EU/UK relationship is the same as the Colonial/British relationship pre 1776.

  19. I wanna see tanks, and nuclear bombs, and cheerleaders, and old cars, soldiers and marching bands all sweating their asses off in the 100 degree heat and 100% humidity of DC dammit!

  20. I’m tickled that NYer celebrates his country’s independence while decrying the idea of my country’s independence.

  21. Your country is already independent.

  22. Pete Moore

Your country is one of the independent countries in the EU. Foolishly your country wants to leave the Union and become a third-world nation.

  23. here ya go let us not forget….lol

Two funerals and a birthday: today MAD Magazine announced it will no longer be publishing any original material.

  28. saw that very sad….. been years since I saw a MAD magazine, but always enjoyed them.

  29. Another victim of technology?

The target audience for Mad Magazine would have been teenage boys

And those kids are no longer walking down to the magazine rack to pick up a paper magazine

They had a great run. I like their spy versus spy cartoons. Hate to see them go

  31. MAD Magazine was one of the things that made growing up in 1970s Ireland bearable. It was very much an American-insider magazine, with all the political and cultural references. The few of us who bought every issue were considered the “American” gang and we prided ourselves in getting all the jokes, although of course we didn’t always. There was something very subversive about the humour, and the way it took on politicians and society values in general was very different to anything we could otherwise get our hands on. People either loved it or detested it.

There was no British equivalent I know of. There used to be OZ, but that was before our time and was too counterculture political to be genuinely funny.

  32. Adults were portrayed as complete idiots

Teenage boys were in complete agreement with that

  33. I have never seen a copy of MAD magazine in my life.
