  1. Amazing story.

    Nike is pathetic.

Some other shoe company should steal the design for flag sneakers, they would do well.

  2. Patrick,

I thought you said actors weren’t supposed to air their opinions.

  3. Symbols and flags evoke very different emotions from different people. I don’t know enough about the Betsy Ross flag to confidently comment but this habit many people have developed of judging historical people and emblems through the rose tinted glasses of today’s societal norms I find repugnant.

I think about John Mitchel when I say this. I walked past his statue every single day when I was going to the Abbey CBS. He was a founding father of Irish Republicanism and like nearly all of them Protestant. He influenced Pearse like no other in 1916. That said when he escaped from Tasmania he moved to the US and supported the confederacy during the civil war. His views on slavery and black people are disgusting by today’s standards but he wasn’t alive for today’s social and moral norms. Some back home wanted to remove his statue but they failed to understand what was being honoured in the first place.

  4. I think the issues that some people have with the Betsy Ross flag isn’t so much due to historical connotations but more recent ones. It has been adopted by the Patriot Movement, a far-right movement in the United States, and the Militiamen.

So it isn’t so much that the flag is racist (or was originally used by racist) but that it has been co-opted by modern racists.

  5. And maybe the former QB is a whiny little bitch.

    Just maybe.

  6. The only ones I see whining are the ones whining about Nike.

  7. Seamus

If it has no historical racial connotations and the only issue is that modern racist scumbags have tried to appropriate it then why should Americans let them away with that? Why shouldn’t companies like Nike reclaim back the flag?

  8. Sure

Kappy never said anything and Nike never caved

    Got it

  9. Corporate America in 2019 is twice as politically correct as government will ever be

    I’ve said this before

  10. “Kappy never said anything and Nike never caved”

A (former) athlete pointed out the potential racist connotations of the design, and a company decided not to use it.

The only people whining about it are people like you.

“If it has no historical racial connotations and the only issue is that modern racist scumbags have tried to appropriate it then why should Americans let them away with that? Why shouldn’t companies like Nike reclaim back the flag?”

I agree but at the same time until it is reclaimed it is acceptable for black athletes to say to Nike that they find it uncomfortable.

  11. They Will cave at the slightest hint of pressure

  12. I think the issues that some people have with the Betsy Ross flag isn’t so much due to historical connotations but more recent ones. It has been adopted by the Patriot Movement, a far-right movement in the United States, and the Militiamen.

Moderates then. By any historical political or social measure, such people are moderates.

  13. Corporate America in 2019 is twice as politically correct as government will ever be

Yep. Big corporats are the most craven, PC bodies on the planet.

  14. Seamus I’d never call what Sorbo did acting…… 😉

  15. “Seamus I’d never call what Sorbo did acting…… 😉”

    Something we finally agree on.
