  1. Seamus. They say it’s a drug and mental health problem, not a housing problem.

    Pat, good video BTW.

  2. thanks

  3. Cheers Charles.

That is probably part of it. However there is also evidence to suggest that drug and mental health problems are caused by homelessness, not that homelessness are caused by drug and mental health problems.

  4. Dr Drew makes the comment “looking at these people, do they look like a population that COULD pay rent? Their problems are much more significant.”

In my own experience with the homeless, it’s not just being down on your luck, but it’s intractable mental health issues like schizophrenia and drugs that are the problems.

Dr Dr makes the statement that San Diego is reducing the homeless population by concentrating on mental health and drugs, not rent.

Please present that evidence I can always use a laugh.

  6. I had a patient one time who was schizophrenic and homeless because of it. He was delusional most of the time. He came from a rich family but they couldn’t even handle him or give him a place to stay. His sister would try to help, but he was destroying her life.

  7. Patrick,

From the National Coalition for the Homeless:

In many situations, however, substance abuse is a result of homelessness rather than a cause. People who are homeless often turn to drugs and alcohol to cope with their situations. They use substances in an attempt to attain temporary relief from their problems.

“I had a patient one time who was schizophrenic and homeless because of it.”

Absolutely. Mental health care, and mental health support, are appalling bad in many countries.

  8. We have a major mental health crises in this country. Addiction is also a mental disease that the powers to be on all sides of the aisle refuse to address or acknowledge.

There’s absolutely no problem there. Even the homeless in the US have a higher standared of living than the middle class in Sweden and Luxembourg.

  10. you’re a git Noel….. but I say that with love
