    I have watched some of Chasing the Moon so far, excellent program covering the politics of the space race, the astronauts families and the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions.

  9. We need a base on the moon. It should have been completed decades ago. It does look like thanks to Musk, Branson, and Bezos that we may just have that before I die.

  10. Imagine the scene, after years of careful brilliant engineering and planning, finally a commercial spacecraft is ready to take passengers to the moon. Following a national lottery , Patrick is the proud American chosen to be the first paying customer to make the historic aeronautical journey and landing to the moon. Excited at the very moment the whole world is watching, he steps off the craft determined to utter a phrase as memorable as Neil Armstrong’s… he thinks carefully about what to say then just as he is about to speak to billions he notices another passenger has stepped ahead of him, wearing a beret and a striped T shirt…. realising that a Cheese eating surrender monkey has beaten him to the surface a global audience hears Patrick utter the immortal phrase….

  11. BBC Radio 4 marked the anniversary this morning. I learned that it was all down the the women engineers.

  12. It’s curious that four famous events – the moon landing, the Woodstock festival, the release of Easy Rider and the start of the Troubles in N. Ireland all happened within about three weeks of each other in 1969.

    In fact, Easy Rider and the moon landing were on the same day and Woodstock and the eruption of the Troubles in NI also happened on the same weekend.

    Of these 4 events, the most depressing was the release of Easy Rider.
