A Cult Classic

By Patrick Van Roy On August 14th, 2019

On this day in 1975

A low-budget homage to the kitschy charms of B-grade sci-fi and horror movies premieres in London, and will have its US debut a month later, but it won’t make much of a splash either critically or commercially at first. Nevertheless, ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show‘ won’t remain obscure for long, becoming a cult classic and midnight-movie mainstay.

Rocky Horror was a mainstay of pure idiotic fun. It was a blast to sit in the TLA on South St with a hundred other drunk and wacked out young adults… throwing Toast at the screen when they called for a toast in the movie and dancing the time warp in the aisles.  A fun time….

  1. Great show. Magenta played by Belfast woman Patricia Quinn.

  2. Meatloaf makes it music-wise. But the highest point – may I say, the climax – was the beautiful Susan Sarandon singing Touch Me.

Since then the world has been drowned in a deluge of porn and racy trash, but is there anything sexier on film than Susan here…..
(the lady also has a great mind and heart)

  3. An absolutely fantastic film and one of my all-time favorites.
There’s so many great things about it, far too many to list here.
Tim Curry, who was a criminally underrated actor is absolutely fantastic.

  4. Noel,

One of these days I must look at Susan’s face while she’s singing that song.

  5. Sang by Patrician Quinn and my fave of the show:

  6. I hate the songs from Rocky horror. The film is fine but the songs are awful.

  7. Glad someone said something.

I thought that the whole film was awful, with an audience pretending to like it more than they really did.

  8. Phantom

thought that the whole film was awful, with an audience pretending to like it more than they really did.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’m not pretending to like this film, I think it’s fantastic. I’m not usually that musicals, but this and the blues brothers are two of my favorites.

  9. Time warp is the worst most annoying song in history… just ahead of the Spice Girls ‘wannabe’ .

Never seen the Blues Brothers film. Don’t think I ever will.

  10. The Blues Brother’s is great Colm….. you’re only denying yourself one of the pleasures of life….

  11. Ok I might give it a go next time it’s on TV. I would hate to deny myself a pleasure !

  12. Blues Brothers is good fun, with some really great music

  13. you won’t be disappointed….. and don’t watch a version edited for TV…. or the second one,

The Blues Brothers was the best piece of work Belushi did, both comically and musically.

    Dead Serious

  14. an endorsement from both Phantom and I…..

  15. Colm

Time warp is the worst most annoying song in history… just ahead of the Spice Girls ‘wannabe’ .

Oh mate, how can you say that! I’ve lost count of the number of great nights out I have had, that have involved doing the time warp. It’s just a jump to the left…..

Never seen the Blues Brothers film. Don’t think I ever will.

You shouldn’t close your mind to new experiences Colm, you never know you might like it. Hang on, I think that’s a quote from frankenfurter.

  16. Patrick’s politics and movie choices have a lot in common….a lot of fiction.

  17. care to debate counselor…. ?

    Pick the topic……

you don’t have the balls….. A Great NYC Lawyer…. surely your not afraid to accept a challenge from a broken down person with my choice of film and politics….

Seriously though, if you ever grow a set Mahons I will debate you fairly, honestly and civilly…. I challenge you to pick the issue.

    it’l snow in hell first….

  18. No one here thinks you behave fairly, honestly and civilly. I am pretty sure you don’t even believe that.

  19. As I said

You don’t have the ability, knowledge or stones….

I challenge you, I have the guts to lose Mahons… you don’t.

Neither you nor Phantom can debate an issue the way you act towards Patty proves it. You have called me a liar for almost 20yrs and have never once found me ever saying a Lie. You found one quote that I attributed to someone that was wrong and claimed that was a lie…

You see unlike you and Phantom I don’t flinch, and I don’t hesitate to be honest… you two are the ones that hide who you are out of shame that someone might actually know that it is either of you that say the things that you do.

How sad too afraid and embarrassed to put your own name to the things you say…. God Forbid….. someone from either of your firms might see how you act or even worse another professional from a different firm….

You see that says it all….. you can’t put your name to it because you’re both ashamed.

    seek help…..

  20. Patrick, there’s something very unhealthy, to say the least, about the way you chase Phantom and Mahons around this site, obsessed with their jobs etc., and looking for some kind of recognition from them that you aren’t going to get. At least as long as you continue posting the way you do.

They are just normal commenters here, the same as everyone else. Just because they are American doesn’t mean they have to have certain opinions or support certain causes. They used to have conversations with you until your obsession with them and their jobs and all that “bubble” bullshit naturally made them want to keep a bit of distance.

I mean, look at Colm and Dave. I’m sure they have interesting jobs as well.

If I were you, I’d take a break and think this all over. There’s nothing here worth getting into such a tizzy about, with mad outbreaks of frustration and insults followed by grovelling apologies and contrition.

That’s just too much. Take a rest, man.

  21. No they’re not Noel…. they’re a pair of gutless SOBs. Who have spent 20yrs attacking and abusing people, and I’m not talking about me.

They do it anonymously. I have never been ANONYMOUS even when I was The Troll I put my name, my profession, where I lived, and where I worked.

They don’t have to hold any views or opinions, but their own.

They used to have conversations with you until your obsession with them and their jobs and all that “bubble” bullshit naturally made them want to keep a bit of distance.

nonsense Noel the 3 of us have been arguing longer than that…. Who crossed the line first… Phantom. As for Mahons you’re also wrong…. he called me a liar long before I grouped him and Phantom together.

    Yeah Noel…. I’m being a dick….. so are they…

I find it interesting that out of the three of us it is always me who you decide to chastise…. you never can quite find it in yourself to ever say “hey why don’t the three of you stop” or ever single out either of them .

I will gladly stop being a prick to anyone if they stop that towards me…. I’ve fought with everyone on this site, I argue with Seamus and Paul everyday and we agree on nothing yet there is no animosity between those two and I, so I must be able to function fine with people of different views and opinions on some level….

If I were you, I’d take a break and think this all over. There’s nothing here worth getting into such a tizzy about, with mad outbreaks of frustration and insults followed by grovelling apologies and contrition.

Oh I’m not frustrated, I’ll certainly never grovel, and I have no reason for contrition.

  22. I will say though Noel I’d rather just debate the issues

  23. And this was supposed to be a light hearted thread about favourite films… sigh

  24. Mahons,
//No one here thinks you behave fairly, honestly and civilly. I am pretty sure you don’t even believe that.//

    I’ll second that Mahons.

  25. Patrick.

You have called me a liar for almost 20yrs and have never once found me ever saying a Lie

Well that’s a lie for a start. Claiming you’ve never lied, and then dismissing any challenges pointing out when you have lied, is not the same as never lying Patrick.

  26. I didn’t lie Dave….. I got it wrong…. I thought it was a real quote. I was wrong… being genuinely wrong is not lying.

Mahons insists that made it a lie, because I defended it..

Look Dave I may irritate you, that’s fine. I don’t lie, I have no need or desire to. If I get something wrong it’s because I got it wrong, I’ve never attempted to deceive anyone here.

  27. Patrick, I’m surprised you haven’t commented on the gun attack in Philly last night, in which 5 police officers were wounded.
That’s more important than the discussions here. Do you know the district?

If hope none of your family was hurt.

  28. I know two of the officers that were shot, no family member hurt.

    Thanks for asking Noel.

  29. I didn’t discuss it last night because my cousin was on the scene.

  30. I will be heading down to the city shortly.
