THE 51st STATE?

By Pete Moore On August 21st, 2019

I see much hilarity around President Trump’s supposed idea to buy Greenland. However, bits of the US were bought, just vast real estate deals, in the past. President Andrew Johnson considered buying Greenland and the Truman administration actually offered $100 million in gold. So President Trump’s idea isn’t quite without precedent. That’s assuming he isn’t just trolling the press, of course. So routinely are the press lies and the press spin about him that it’s difficult to get through the reports to actual facts.

But hang, what’s this from eight months ago?

The BBC: How Greenland could become China’s Arctic base

China is flexing its muscles. As the second richest economy in the world, its businessmen and politicians are involved just about everywhere in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Now, though, China is taking a big interest in a very different part of the world: the Arctic […]

It is important strategically for the United States, which maintains a vast military base at Thule, in the far north. Both the Danes and the Americans are deeply worried that China should be showing such an interest in Greenland.

Of course China is showing an interest in Greenland. It’s “investing” (buying up) everywhere. It’s not just for the minerals, which the press stories have cited with regard to President Trump. Just look at where Greenland is, its access to the Arctic and Atlantic and consider the enormous problems China could cause from there.

But the Danes won’t flog Greenland to the US. Fine then, but they should be told that allowing China to buy its way onto Greenland won’t be viewed as a good deal either.

  1. On Monday, when this story came out, Trump was asked about his upcoming visit to Denmark. He joked that Greenland would not be on the agenda.

Now today he cancelled the trip to Denmark. Why? Well, according to reports. becasue Danish PM Ms Frederiksen has “no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland”.

Anyone who has the slightest respect for this clown does not deserve the slightest respect from anyone else.

  2. So President Trump’s idea isn’t quite without precedent.

But what is definitely without precedent is “President” Trump throwing his toys out of the pram and cancelling his state visit to Denmark at less than two weeks notice. All because of the “nasty” reaction of the Danish PM to his demand offer to buy Greenland.

How did this man-child ever get to be POTUS, never mind be nailed on for a second term?

  3. Wonder why Pete didn’t mention Trumps immature cancellation of the trip to Denmark in his post. Perhaps even Trump Ubergroupie Pete is embarrassed by that childish reaction. Hey, maybe even Patty is politically blushing 😉

PS . re, Pete’s Irrelevant China comparison. There is a massive difference between investing in a country’s resources and offering to buy the whole sovereign entity.

  4. Perhaps even Trump Ubergroupie Pete is embarrassed by that childish reaction. Hey, maybe even Patty is politically blushing

    No chance Colm.

  5. As Trump’s proposals go this was far from the most wacky. But the Danes are solid allies and it is a shame he is treating them with the disrespect he treats everyone else.

  6. I will be interested to see if any of our Trump fans here come into this thread to support his cancellation and subsequent angry tweets directed at Denmark. .

  7. But the Danes won’t flog Greenland to the US. Fine then, but they should be told that allowing China to buy its way onto Greenland won’t be viewed as a good deal either.

Then maybe Trump should tell the Brits to stop letting China buy its way into Britain? As in building Hinckley nuclear power station, to say nothing of hundreds of other businesses in all sectors. And let’s not get started on London property.

  8. I will be interested to see if any of our Trump fans here come into this thread to support his cancellation and subsequent angry tweets directed at Denmark.

I’m sure you won’t have to wait long Colm.

  9. We have an erratic screwball president who is speaking like an unfiltered drug addict more and more

The world is laughing at this guy. He doesn’t know what day it is.

  10. Come on Patrick, we’re waiting 😄

  11. Denmark is the real enemy

How dare they not sell their territory to their good friend Trump

  12. Maybe he can ask Boris to sell him the Isle of Man as a consolation for the loss of the Greenland “real estate deal”.

  13. During the Trump Presidency the only real criticism of him by a Trump voter has been Charles. I can’t recall a serious criticism of him on any issue by any of the others. So basically this next election rests entirely on the shoulders of Charles.

  14. Pete, he’ll offer the UK a fortune to buy it, and give the UK a great trade deal. What price would you put on the UK – best to accept the offer now while it’s as large as it currently is – maximise your return.

  15. President Andrew Johnson considered buying Greenland and the Truman administration actually offered $100 million in gold.

$100 million for Greenland to become the 51st state?

And just think, all it’ll take for Britain to do the same is a measly trade deal 🙂

  16. Will Trump now build a wall around Solvang – The Californian Danish town – in revenge. 😉

  17. You would think he’d be satisfied with the sole right to build housing in the Occupied Territories…

  18. This episode isn’t over. Watch Trump bypass Denmark and start to address the Greenlanders with offers of “the deal of the century”.

Be sure that he won’t let this go just yet.

  19. There is one thing that is definitely not in Trump’s playbook on any issue whatsoever:

“No, we can’t do that. It wouldn’t be right.”

  20. All Greenlanders have health care.

Once Trump takes control, we will have to repeal Greenland’s health care and replace it with some bullshit coverage.

  21. I understand he has turned his attention to buying Gilligan’s Island, something Thurston Howell never managed to do.

  22. The thing about it is, it’s not bizarre at all. There are only 60,000 Greenlanders. If you gave $2m to each Greenlander it would only cost $120b. Buttons, to the US, but a lot of money to 60,000, for a huge landmass with undoubted mineral wealth. But, their sovereignty isn’t their own.

However, would Trump be bellicose enough to bully Denmark if the 60k Greenlanders voted to ‘sell themselves’… I wouldn’t bet against it.

  23. The Danish PM said that Denmark does not regard Denmark to be the owner of Greenland. They say that it belongs to Greenlanders

So when the stupid idiot proposed to buy it from Denmark he was showing that he knew nothing, as well as being insulting to both Danes and Greenlanders

  24. Maybe Trump will offer to buy the Amazon from his pal Bolsonaro in Brazil? It will soon all be burnt down and will offer great development opportunities. It looks like Bolsonaro wants it all cleared asap:

“The Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, has accused environmental groups of setting fires in the Amazon as he tries to deflect growing international criticism of his failure to protect the world’s biggest rainforest.

A surge of fires in several Amazonian states this month followed reports that farmers were feeling emboldened to clear land for crop fields and cattle ranches because the new Brazilian government was keen to open up the region to economic activity. Brazil has had more than 72,000 fire outbreaks so far this year, an 84% increase on the same period in 2018, according to the country’s National Institute for Space Research. More than half of them were in the Amazon.

There was a sharp spike in deforestation during July, which has been followed by extensive burning in August. Local newspapers say farmers in some regions are organising “fire days” to take advantage of weaker enforcement by the authorities.”

    https://www.haaretz.com/us-news/like-the-king-of-israel-trump-unleashes-bizarre-twitter-storm-1.7728867

  26. Brazilian beef and coffee should simply be boycotted.

  27. This could be the eco-disaster of the decade. Bolsonaro has given the nod to his logger and farmer supporters to burn the lot:

“Wildfires raging in the Amazon jungle have plunged Brazil’s largest city into total darkness in the middle of the day Eerie pictures show Sao Paulo shrouded in a thick cloud of smoke as drivers attempt make their way around the city on Monday afternoon. Officials with Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) said the darkness was the result of humid air and smoke from unprecedented fires burning in the Amazon rainforest thousands of miles away. There have been 9,507 new forest fires across Brazil in the past four days alone, leading to concerns a surge in deforestation is wrecking havoc on the environment.

  28. Peter – yes, I agree. Bolsonaro is a pawn of agri -business

  29. The Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, has accused environmental groups of setting fires in the Amazon as he tries to deflect growing international criticism of his failure to protect the world’s biggest rainforest.

    False flag!!

    Allan please investigate

  30. Some great geopolitical analysis going on in the thread.

Then maybe Trump should tell the Brits to stop letting China buy its way into Britain?

    I wish someone would.

Wonder why Pete didn’t mention Trumps immature cancellation of the trip to Denmark in his post.

Because it’s more about an expansionist China and what to do about it. Really, in future decades China will be more important than a cancelled Trump visit to Denmark in 2019.

    Trust me on that one.

  31. Yes, we need a total boycott of all Brazilian produce asap.

  32. Phantom – Bolsonaro is acting for agri-business to destroy the Amazon rainforest, and it will be a disaster

  33. To be fair to Trump, he’s not the Western World leader to make the most preposterous proposal this week. That goes to his British doppelganger, Boris. Who suggests, that to make Brexit work Ireland should temporarily exit the EU and align itself instead with the UK. To make the UK exit from the UK work.

Okay, who has been supplying waki-paki to Boris, eh?

  34. The Greenland icecap is melting at an accelerating rate every year. When it’s all gone those minerals like “god-given” coal will be there for the taking. But world sea-levels will have risen by 23 feet, give or take. Nothing to see here, please move along:

” Greenland’s ice sheet is melting six times faster than it was in the 1980s — that’s even faster than scientists thought. A new study has revealed that melting Greenland ice has contributed to more than half an inch of global sea-level rise since 1972. Half of that increase happened in the last eight years. If all of Greenland’s ice were to melt, it would raise sea levels 23 feet, submerging some coastal cities. In the US, that would put everything south of West Palm Beach, Florida underwater. ”

  35. … ‘from the EU work’

  36. Boris is a slightly smarter and saner version of Trump

    Not a compliment to either

  37. To make the UK exit from the UK work.

No, Smcgiff, I think your first version was correct, if you re-draft it to: “To make England’s exit from the UK work”. Brcause what we are witnessing is the Tory Party ceasing to be the party of the Union and instead becoming the English National Party.

  38. That to make Brexit work Ireland should temporarily exit the EU and align itself instead with the UK. To make the UK exit from the UK work.

    Superb stuff 🙂

    The UK had referendum
    The UK created Brexit
The UK proposed the backstop, which the EU agreed to before the UK changed its mind.
Johnson voted for the Backstop, (according to the Nige)

    The anti – democratic bastard!

  39. For pity’s sake let’s just allow Trump to buy Ireland north and south. He would then get his very own ‘Greenland’ and solve the Brexit backstop conundrum in one go 😉

  40. Yeah, Paul. I think Boris was reading Waterford whispers (great Irish, parody website btw)thinking it was a serious website.

One can only hope, Peter 😉

  41. Dear god, Colm… you realise Boris and Trump might take that seriously. Very irresponsible of you!!!

  42. Waterford Whispers really is superb Mc!

    https://waterfordwhispersnews.com/2019/08/21/7-boris-johnson-solutions-to-the-backstop-rejected-by-the-eu/

  43. The problem with that website, Paul, is that it must be impossible for them to out parody Trump than Trump himself. Boris is in danger of being equally tricky.

  44. That’s true. Even just a few months ago the headline ‘ Trump cancels Trip to Denmark because they wouldn’t let him buy Greenland ‘ would have been obviously a parody, and here we are today…..

  45. How about Trump does a real-estate deal with BoJo for Northern Ireland and let it become the 51st State.

    It’s a win win win.

As Colm said, Trump would get his Green land.

The move would solve the ancient sectarian quarrel once and for all.

The people in NI would realise that Ian Paisley wasn’t be most bizarre leader in the world after all.

The deal would get Boris the necessary dosh to pay the EU divorce bill.

All paramilitaries would be allowed keep their guns.

There’s already a sizeable population that fanatically supports Israel.

Trump will be delighted to hear of all those militant Republicans there.

  46. ..and he’d be delighted at the presence of all those ‘Orangemen’ who share his glowing skin colour.. 😉

  47. Conan O’Brien asked the people of Greenland how they felt about President Donald Trump’s rebuffed idea of buying the autonomous Danish territory for the United States.

And those interviewed by the late night TV host had an overwhelmingly negative response. “I don’t want Trump to be my president,” said one Greenlander in the “Conan Without Borders” special that aired Tuesday.

  49. Anyone read about Pence’ visit to Ireland yesterday?

And there was I thinking he was the only sane one in the WH.

  50. Pence works for a thief, and he has to do what the thief tells him to do.

That’s why Pence is staying at the shitty Trump hotel in the west of Ireland when he is in for meetings in Dublin – a stay that necessitates greater expense to the taxpayer, including a helicopter flight but which puts money in Trump’s pocket.

Will want to hear how the frauds justify this.

  51. before someone who owned hotels was in office how did presidents or any politician enrich themselves from the job ?

I don’t know they go in paupers and leave multimillionaires…. a few hotel rooms is silly in context of the corruption of our political class

  52. US Presidents are paid $1.6 million per term. And due to the nature of their lives as President (where everything is largely provided for them) they don’t incur substantial personal expenses. So it would be expected that Presidents would exit office substantially wealthier than when they entered.

  53. The drain the swamp guys didn’t mean any of it

They will never criticize this open corruption
