CAN WE LEAVE YET?

By Pete Moore On September 19th, 2019

Let’s unpick this.

MPs in Austria have dealt a blow to the EU’s landmark trade deal with South America’s economic bloc, by demanding a government veto on the deal.

The draft free trade agreement took 20 years to complete and the EU has described it as its biggest so far […]

Without backing from every government in the EU, the Mercosur deal cannot go through.

Jörg Leichtfried of the centre-left SPÖ hailed the decision as a “great success for consumers, the environment and animal welfare as well as human rights”, warning that it would have been bad for climate protection and labour rights in South America.

So a trade deal, 20 years in the making, which would have made us richer by abolishing a lot of the EU’s protectionist tariffs, gets blocked by a bunch of Austrian communists. Of course Irish farmers, who benefit from such restrictions on Argie longhorn, are against it also.

Why should the opinion of Austrian communists and Irish farmers affect the prices that we in the UK pay? Because that’s how the EU works, and that’s why it’s backward, dysfunctional and sinking.

We’ll note also that an EU trade deal isn’t only about trade. You can have a trade deal only if you fall into line on so-called worker’s rights, human rights environmental laws and something called “climate protection”. You can have a trade deal only if you become an offshore haven for every backward idea imposed on everyone in the EU too.

That is not a trade deal. That is EU imperialism.

No, we’ll note that the EU trade deal is only about trade but some EU members don’t like the idea that some SA governments are quite content to let the big corporations deforest natural resources wily nily.

It’s good to see that you’ve admitted there’ll never be an EU Army unless all EU members agree to it though so now mabybe you’ll stop trying to push that bullshit, (although I seriously doubt it).

  2. It’s also good for Pete to acknowledge that there is no EU dictatorship or bullying rules imposed on members. For all major decisions, treaties, directives etc, all member states must consent thereby ensuring all serious individual concerns must be addressed. So much for the Brexiteers repeated complaint about Brussels bullying Britain.

China is the EU’s biggest trading partner – yes?

Did you read the BBC article that you linked to? Were you in favour of TTIP?

“All but one of Austria’s main parties rejected the deal in a parliamentary sub-committee, from the far right to the centre left.”

I say well done to the “Austrian Communists”. This deal was all about corporate welfare, just as TTIP (supported by “Crooked Hillary”, opposed and ditched by “honest Donald”) was all about corporate welfare and any UK “free trade” deal with Trump will be all about corporate welfare for his crony-capitalist supporters.

  5. TPP Is a huge trading block that pointedly excluded China.

When the US walked away from TPP we gave China a great gift

TPP Still exists in a smaller form, perhaps when we get a real president again we may we rejoin Our own creation

  6. //China is the EU’s biggest trading partner – yes?//

No. The EU’s biggest trading partner is the US, about 15 pc ahead of China.

The Chinese do, however, account for more imports to the EU than any other country.

As far as I understand such things, the Yanks do have a justified gripe about the EU’s trade balance, where the US loses out and China gains big time.
The EU exports 50 pc more to the US than it imports from there.

  7. We’ll note also that an EU trade deal isn’t only about trade.

The other stuff is important to the EU as it works as a backdoor into the politics of that country. Through regulations and other stuff they are able to influence and eventually control. This is what Guy Verhofstadt meant when he was at the EU conference and was talking about Empires.

Of course there are those here that will stick their collective heads in the sand and ignore it. Fine ! But you have been warned.

  8. Noel

What big picture legitimate trade gripe does the US have against the EU?

  9. Phantom, I’ll write later.

Now it’s work time – I have an expensive life I need to support.

Then off to my first demonstration in a generation. I have a climate to protect. 🙂

But, boy, are you up early. 3:00 a.m. NY time!!

  10. No I am in London!

  11. First demonstration in a generation? What was the last one?

I go to an enormous one every year against the Spanish gov’s policy of dispersion of Basque prisoners and prior to that the last was against the slaughter in Gaza in 2014.

  12. I think the last demonstration I was on was in front of the RTE studios when they decided to scrap Scrap Saturday with the brilliant Dermot Morgan.

Morgan should have been both Taoiseach and leader of the opposition at once, I thought

The demonstration was vocal, loud and at times violent, even though, unfortunately, I was the only one who turned up. Or maybe because of that.
But ultimately it had little effect, and Morgan went off in a huff to do Father Ted.

  13. ahhh yes go worship at the pagan alter of Gaia….

so tell me Noel did you confess your Climate sins ?

ABC has created a website for members of your religion to confess their climate sins… have you confessed yours ?

  14. //so tell me Noel did you confess your Climate sins ? //

I’m going there to demonstrate against myself.

  15. this is great….. Climate Change is a Religion when you believe in something that can’t be proven you have “faith” which is the purview of religion…… NBC (sorry not ABC) has created a Website for their fellow cultists to CONFESS THEIR SINS.

  16. Confessions
Even those who care deeply about the planet’s future can slip up now and then. Tell us: Where do you fall short in preventing climate change? Do you blast the A/C? Throw out half your lunch? Grill a steak every week? Share your anonymous confession with NBC News.

  17. Patrick, everyone believes things that can’t be proven. It has nothing to do with religion.

  18. But ultimately it had little effect, and Morgan went off in a huff to do Father Ted

Indeed, the magnificent Morgan was a national treasure bt at least his flit got him the wider exposure and acclaim that he deserved. I was annoyed when Dermot Morgan went to Channel Four but I was absolutely devastated whn the brilliant Zig & Zag did the same thing.

  19. Noel, Paul,

    We’re great at exporting talent.

Must be why you lads are abroad. (And I’m stuck here!)
