Because Friday night is Music Night

Another week done at the coalface of capitalism. Incredibly, for a man of many talents, there are some things at which I am rubbish. Some may see this passable footballer, scrappy hooker and average skier of old and assume that nothing is beyond me, but oh they’d be surprised.

All it would take is for me to sing. I was truly born with a voice which would end a karaoke party in a flash. It would probably end in violence too. Maybe a rain of bottles. It’s a tragic irony, because I’d love to be able to sing. Maybe we only yearn for the things beyond our reach.

But there’s a universe somewhere in which I can sing, and I know how it sounds. Now you can have your Elvis and Sinatra and all the rest. But I reckon any man who wants to sing wants to sound like George Jones sounded. Accompanied by a fiddle.

Have yourselves a great weekend whatever you’re up to. As always, feel free to share your top sounds down below –

  1. Having a go at the doo wop classic ballads. My god, when magnificent songwriting is coupled with Phil Spector something magical happens:

Not even the Beatles could better it.

  2. George Jones it is said was greatly admired by Keith Richards and by other rockers.

    Classic country voice.

  3. there is no sound better than Motown

  4. How about some Thrash Metal, sung in the Maori tongue?

  5. Paul –

Burt Bacharach, a genius of a composer. I like to know who’s behind recordings. It’s incredible how the same names pop up, either as composers or performers.

  6. Bacharach had an unfailing Midas touch Pete. This was one of his although this less well known version is my favourite:

  7. Great song petem\
reminds me for some reason of the Night they drove old dixie down

actually i paid a site $97 for some learn to sing course , haven’t had time, got fed up with the daily emails hassling me – hopefully i will make time
Everyone can sing because the throat and larynx make a perfect instrument
Get to a gospel choir petem and be enriched 😉

  8. George Jones had a magic voice.

  9. The Grand Tour is one of my favorite songs.

  10. Paul –

That’s the best version. The Stranglers nailed it.

    kurt –

The person who can make me sing hasn’t yet been born.

  11. Many of my favorite artists kind of can’t sing…Dylan, Tom Waits, etc

    This is Leonard Cohen:

“I was born like this, I had no choice.
I was born with the gift of a golden voice”

  12. Ahh I dunno petem there’s a big black momma out there they love their gospel . Best place to get trained. It’s fierce too but in s sweet way . She might even sit on yer face of you say you love the lord .
ACH it’s after the watershed were grown men .
I’m always looking for new sounds and voices. All of the below is completely spontaneous . No wonder an angel showed upn

Jason Upton and an Angel HD

  14. Very apt for this month:

  15. What’s an eclectic Friday night music box. I enjoyed listening to those.

Seimi, your tune was definitely the most interesting.

I usually wake up with a song playing in my head. Sometimes my brain even makes up a tune. Does anybody else have this happen to them, or is it just me? Anyway, this was the song playing in my head when I woke up this morning so it seems apt to post it here.

  16. Occasionally it happens to me Dave.

    This is great:

  17. Something non Central European from me just to make a change.

I don’t know if anyone else has been watching ‘The Affair’?
Here in the UK we got the very last episode ever on Tuesday night after 6 seasons.
I must confess that i’ve loved every single minute of it.
This video of the wedding Flash Mob almost at it’s end just summed it all up nicely and i have to admit that this soppy old tosser cried just a little.
It was a very clever series. The way that it told the same scene from 2 or even 3 different viewpoints was pretty unique and meant you had to keep your eyes open as to just exactly what was going on. Characters changed almost weekly and you never quite knew who to like or trust.
Early seasons for me had just a bit too many unnecessary and fairly explicit ‘bedroom’ scenes but they did tail off in the later years a bit. It’s not one for the kids.
So goodbye to ‘The Affair’. You’ll be missed.

  18. Paul.

That was excellent mate, a very talented young lady.

    Nice video.

  19. Beck – Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometime (Live)

  20. If we’re going to see young women cover rock songs –

She can really play, and she has great taste in music.

  21. I’ll see that and raise you Pete:

  22. Drums are more fun than Barbie.

  23. This is as good as it gets. Beethoven piano concerto number one, slow movement. It plays out serenely.
