ATW FRIDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX

By Pete Moore On December 13th, 2019

Because Friday night is Music Night.

Another week done at the coalface of capitalism, fortunately more weeks of capitalism to come. I’ve decided to treat myself to a new pair of smart boots in the sales after Christmas. I don’t have an extravagant lifestyle and I’m not a shopperholic. However I’ve always has a taste for decent shoes and boots.

I blame rude boys. I was into the music back in the day, but I was just as much impressed by how smartly turned out they were. At ten years of age I went, overnight, from being a scruffy urchin to begging my mum for a pair of brogues. I did my chores and eventually got the brogues, and I’ve not been a scruffy urchin since.

Have yourselves a good weekend whatever you’re up to. As always, feel free to share your top sounds down below –

  3. Pete, etc

    Technical question

You used to be able to add a comment at any time to a thread, even years later

More recently, there seems to be a time limit after which comments are no longer allowed.

Do you know was this an intentional change?

I was going to add a comment on Hong Kong to one of the threads there but could not. But it was not necessarily worth creating a new thread on it.

  4. ska nights are the best, have sat with people who have just met and enjoyed some good times over an evening whilst keeping the ska sounds going ..
I love peeps prepared to dress up in silly costumes, fool around drink on set, have a laugh

  6. Paul – A good pair of brogues is an essential bit of kit for every man. Now I’m thinking about it, women often wore them back then too. Quality choice too.

Phantom – I have no idea.

  7. good stuff, found a doc on two tone 50 mins

  8. I love Night Boat to Cairo. Absolutely love it.

When I have the time I’ll tell you about the night I ended up skanking to One Step Beyond in a Paris jazz club.

  9. Lee Thompson wrote quite a lot of Madness’ material. This was written about attitudes to his sister after it was discovered she was pregnent with a mixed-race child:

  12. For me this was Madness at their absolute zenith:

  13. I was intrigued by the Ska revival of 1979 and I listened to some of the music and found it alright, but there was always just something about the inverted rocksteady beat that I simply couldn’t get. I just never liked the beat of the drums being back to front. It was a form of music that I had to be in a particular frame of mind to listen to. I’ve got a handful of late 60’s rocksteady 45s on the Pyramid label though, they’re OK when I’m in the mood, but generally I just prefer the classic rock beat.

  14. However I’ve always has a taste for decent shoes and boots.

When it comes to smart clothes and fashion in general, I’m terrible at making choices. I never know what looks good or what to buy and past partners have bought me clothes to make me look a bit more presentable. But when it comes to footwear I also love smart boots and shoes. I’ll take the time to do the research to find the best possible footwear.
my favourite footwear for the last 20 years has been these Rockport XCS boots which I think look smart but also waterproof incredibly comfortable and unbelievably long lasting. I highly recommend them.

  15. Good music selection. The specials and Madness two of my favourites.

This is my favourite madness track.

I noticed this too a couple of weeks ago. You no longer seem to be able to comment on older threads.

As for music, knock yourself out D:

  18. Paul.

Once again you’ve accessed the music library in my head to find one of my favourite tunes I’d forgotten about. Let me return the favour.

I’m really tempted by those Dr Marten shoes. I didn’t realise they did shoes as well as boots. I’m guessing they last a really long time. Has that been your experience of them?

  19. Funny that we’ve started a shoe conversation

I find that many “ walking shoes “ have soles that are either way too soft and squishy or are hard as a rock.

I’ve been actively looking for a pair that gives just the right amount of arch and general support

  20. Phantom.

The Rockport shoes I recommended have something called a Vibram sole. It gives great support, had just the right amount of flex and lasts an incredibly long time. They also have removable inserts, which give extra support.

  21. This is Daughter, live from a studio in Seattle. They are British and I reckon that they resemble Portishead:

    And here’s Portishead live

  22. This was actually a later HL song I was thinking of before I went with Depache Mode D:

    A beautiful, beautiful ballad.

As for shoes, as I said to Pete above, I bought my Docs more than twenty years ago and barring some wear on the soles they’re almost like the day I bought them.

  23. Paul

Sorry to be a pain, but do you wear them on a regular basis or just occasionally?

Another nice music post. That song touches an emotional nerve with me because I used to go out with a girl called Louise and I was really sad when we split up.

  24. Allan.

That’s very nice tune you’ve posted.

  25. I don’t wear them everyday but regularly enough. If you like them get them, they’re great quality footwear.

  26. I’m so indecisive when it comes to buying anything mate. Especially footwear. I’m probably trying to justify the expense myself.
But I really like the look of these Doc martens. I think I’ll splurge out this Christmas.

  27. After a bit of research online this has convinced me.

Thanks Dave – I recall(?) you mentioning a liking for Portishead which I share, and there are some bands around which have similarities

You have a good memory Allan. I liked the daughter track so much I’ve added it to my music library.

This KEXP station really does get excellent guests, and sound from those guests

  32. That was very nice Allan thanks. I had a listen to that while I was making my dinner.
