Home of the Brave?

By Mahons On February 24th, 2020

Mayor Peter Buttigieg’s campaign hit a manipulative low that i cant seem to find anyone complaining about. He has a 9 year old boy on stage state that he wants to be brave like the Mayor in coming out as gay.
Are others too worried about the backlash to suggest this is exploitive? The kid is 9. Whatever personal issues he is addressing, real or imagined, are not properly addressed as part of a campaign. Buttigieg is doubling down on the kid’s bravery (and hinting in a nonsubtle manner as to his own).
Cant one hold the belief that recognizing there are young people with sexual preference confusion and that such issues are not best addressed with a mircrophone and cameras?
If Trump pushed forward a 9 year old on some personal issue that media would be howling with indignation. They should be now.

  1. Mahons, I’m looking around here and can’t find anything at all on this.

If this is true then it is indeed exploitative and cynical. A 9 year old shouldn’t even know what sex is never mind think that they are gay.

  2. *Update, just found it now. However, it seems from what I read that the child asked him a question?

  3. Check out the setting. The staging.

  4. As I said above, if it was staged than it’s exploitative and cynical. A 9 year old shouldn’t even know what sex is never mind think that they are gay.

  5. A 9 year old

    Can you possibly imagine

A new low even for politicians

    I have not heard this

  6. It’s symbolic of your party Mahons….. a Gay man exploiting a child.

  7. You’re right Mahons, if this was Trump all holy hell would break loose, as it should.

  9. Odd thing to write. You must be in a dark place.

  10. Surely I can’t be the only one who sniggers at a gay politician called Buttigieg?

  11. Paul – I’m sure you are not. Trump’s people must be holding their breath.

  12. Paul

You are scraping the BOTTOM of the barrel now. Don’t be an ASS. Mayor Pete shouldn’t really be the BUTT of any jokes 😉

  13. He’s some cheek all the same Colm.

  14. Paul

Are we in danger of slipping into a homophobic hole with our smutty gay jokes 😉

  15. It’s just a bit of craic Colm.

  16. Oh God. Is there no limit to stupidity in American politics?

  17. Gross exploitation of a young kid in front of a large crowd

  18. I don’t think it’s necessarily gross exploitation,. We don’t know the extent to which this kid made his own independent decision to do this, but it is definitely tacky and stagy like a corny soap opera emotive storyline.

  19. Colm – were you ever a 9-year-old kid? You didn’t get to make the ‘independent’ decision of what time you went to bed, never mind whose bed.

All I am saying is that I don’t know the circumstances of how this event happened. I am just commenting on the emotive optics of it. It’s all a bit syrupy rather than nasty and I don’t think it’s politically effective.

  21. I’m sure some forms of political child exploitation are acceptable in Aberdeen:
