DR CALDERWOOD’S REAL CRIME

By Pete Moore On April 5th, 2020

Police have issued a warning to Scotland’s chief medical officer for visiting her second home in Fife during the coronavirus lockdown.

Dr Catherine Calderwood has been heavily criticised after pictures of her family trip to Earlsferry were published in The Scottish Sun.

She apologised “unreservedly” and said she would continue to focus on her job.

Oh dear, Scotland’s Chief Medical Officer has flouted some new pass laws. I didn’t know about them this morning when I had a lovely long stroll in the country here. Come and get me rozzers.

Dr Calderwood has been piled on all day. I’m not at all bothered by what is really just hypocrisy. I’m sure it was all perfectly safe. Her real crime in the People’s Republic of Scotland is having a second home. That’s what gets some people’s goat.

  1. Did she have a second home before the pandemic?

  2. It seems her real crime is not practising what she preached:

Scotland’s chief medical officer has been forced to step back from public briefings after a furious reaction to news she broke her own rules to twice visit her second home during the coronavirus outbreak

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/apr/05/scotland-chief-medical-officer-seen-flouting-lockdown-advice-catherine-calderwood

  3. So, she has stepped back from public briefings, but is still in her role.

    Correct?

  4. I don’t know definitively but nothing I’ve read suggests she’s out of her role.

  5. She stays in post but will no longer give the daily updates.

  6. And she still does not possess a sciebackground.

It’s not what they know, it’s who they know.

  7. *scientific background

  8. I watched the press conference. It was a car crash. She needs to step down as she has become the story. Yes, there is a bit of schadenfreude but most people seem rightly irked by her “do as I say, not as I do” attitude.

Paul – and she is a Belfastie originally!

  9. And she still does not possess a scientific background

    ??

As an obstetrician and gynaecologist one would assume that she has at least a minimal scientific background? My youngest girl is doing a veterinary medicine degree and the study of anatomy, chemistry, bio-chemistry, biology & cytology all feature very very prominantly.

Paul – and she is a Belfastie originally!

Aye Reg, the daughter of a psychiatrist and surgeon Methody educated Malone roder.

  10. Paul

She has a clinical background, not a scientific background.

  11. As I said H, I’d assume that being a practising obstetrician and gynaecologist she would at the very least have a minimal scientific background.

  12. Paul

I should think that having a ‘minimal’ scientific background being in charge of the biggest threat to the human race in a century, is probably not the best way to go about things.

    What say you?

  13. Yes she broke a regulation that in the great scheme of things is very much the lesser of the risks. She travelled in a car with her family to another home without associating with anyone else. It’s not as if she threw a party for a hundred guests. At the press conference today each selected media member who spoke was only interested in the soap opera aspect of trying to get a scalp. I am glad Nicola Sturgeon did not rise to the bait and pointlessly sack the woman just to satiate the press packs demand.

  14. Paul

Yes, she is a practising obstetrician and gynaecologist.

What is her expertise on pathogens and deadly virus pandemics.

  15. Colm.

    Thanks.

I will without guilt then, pack us all up into the motor in the morning after 25 odd days and travel down to the family retreat on the coast.

Get some fresh air and take a stroll on the beach.

I will apologise when we get back home.

  16. Harri

As long as you don’t come close to anyone else it’s not the greatest of sins.

But back to the issue, what annoyed me about the press conference today is that virtually all the invited questions were the same. Each reporter selected repeated the demand that Mrs Calderwood must resign. It became a tug of war for them and they wasted the opportunity to ask much more important and relevant questions requiring information about the whole range of serious matters involved in dealing with the crisis. The Scottish media did not do themselves proud today. They trivialised the situation.

  17. What is her expertise on pathogens and deadly virus pandemics.

I don’t know Harri although I suspect probably not much. She was appointed as Chief Medical Officer for Scotland five years before the virus outbreak there.

  18. Paul

The Scottish government might as well have employed a bricklayer.

Yes, she has probably done all the courses , speaks the same pointless buzzwords, leads above authority, and all that.

But this is unprecedented dangerous times, why employ a practising obstetrician and gynaecologist?

  19. But this is unprecedented dangerous times, why employ a practising obstetrician and gynaecologist?

Because she was appointed Chief Medical Officer for Scotland five years before the virus outbreak there.

  20. Precisely Paul

    When nothing was going on.

Now, it’s a worldwide crisis, her PC courses, correct PC buzzwords, and sense of entitlement, mean nothing.

  21. Dr Catherine Calderwood?

She only had one job to do, follow her own advice she dished out to the plebs, and she couldn’t even complete that task without hitch.

    Incompetence doesn’t even come close,

This is why I am utterly convinced she is if the lefty persuasion.

Some pigs are far more equal than others.

In reality, she probably can not conceive what she is actually apologising for.

    It’s just so unfair…

  22. What PC courses, correct PC buzzwords, and sense of entitlement H?

She’s a qualified and practising physician appointed by the Scottish Parliament as Chief Medical Officer for Scotland five years ago H. You can’t just construct an opinion about something that you couldn’t possibly know and then present it as a fact.

As Chief Medical Officer for Scotland they can’t just gas her and slot another into the post.

  23. Harri

She has resigned. I am sure that will help enormously in the fight against the virus !

  24. I don’t think it was a resigning offence. She should have been censured but I don’t think the offence warranted a resignation.

  25. I think her resignation was inevitable after this story appeared. Her credibility as chief medical officer was shot by flouting the rules on two consecutive weekends while making daily appeals to the public to follow those rules. Not acceptable.

  26. It probably is a resigning offence. Her actions potentially weakened public confidence in the lockdown, which could have potentially weakened the lockdown. If that was the case then her actions put lives at increased risk. If a Chief Medical Officer takes personal, selfish actions that put lives at risk then yes they should resign, or be sacked.

  27. The rules should be based on behaviour that may spread the virus. A family moving directly from one household they are living in to another own they own with no contact with other people hardly fits the bill. Also, didn’t Prince Charles do the same thing after the lockdown. Moving from his London residence to his Scottish one after he was diagnosed with the virus ?

  28. I’d have no issue sacking Prince Charles as well.

  29. I’d have no issue sacking Prince Charles as well.

  30. Colm

I think that Charles was in Scotland when he was diagnosed.

  31. Yes. That would be my position too Colm.

  32. ” A family moving directly from one household they are living in to another own they own with no contact with other people hardly fits the bill.”

She also didn’t. She took the family on a mini holiday to that town. They walked about the town, went to the beach.

  33. Seamus

I didn’t know that part of the story. I am prepared to concede that does make it more of a resignation requiring offence.

  34. ??

As an obstetrician and gynaecologist one would assume that she has at least a minimal scientific background?

Paul – does a GP have enough scientific background? Does Ron Paul have enough scientific background?

  35. It probably is a resigning offence. Her actions potentially weakened public confidence in the lockdown, which could have potentially weakened the lockdown.

The simple fact is that this hapless fool knows that Covid-19 is a hoax and of absolutely no danger to her and her family. If she is forced out, she may spill the beans which is why the even more idiotic Nicola Sturgeon is refusing to sack her. Perhaps a timely suicide is needed 🙂

  36. Oops – I see elsewhere that she has resigned. There must have been emoluments

  37. Allan

You mean “ oops her resignation rather wrecks my claim that she cannot be allowed to quit in case she spills the beans “ 😉

  38. A hoax Allan my follies say that to all the folks who dying of it
Get yer head tested me lad

  39. Colm – here are all of the empty hospitals in the US: no queues, no “war zones”, no “apocalyptic conditions”. I even found the term ‘Corona denier’ 🙂 That be me

#FilmyourHospital #FilmyourHospitals Last night the corporate media reported A HUGE SPIKE IN CORONA VIRUS DEATHS IN ONE DAY…
TODAY: Mt Sinai Hospital, Central Park New York April 5TH 2020.. been here all afternoon… Ghost town.. NO WAR ZONE, NO AMBULANCES JUST BIRDS CHIRPING.

Some comments to the effect of – How dare you question your healthcare and media coverage. As was pointed out, CBS used footage from Italy and passed it off as NY. People then went out for a look and asked the staff, and some staff are now joining in the rejection of’the narrative’. It’s a hoax.

  40. Scotland apparently has more than one embarrassing fool.

  41. She took the family on a mini holiday to that town. They walked about the town, went to the beach.

I wasn’t aware of that. If true then the offence is more serious and on the face of it is probably warrants a resigination.

    Colm.

She has resigned from the public view, she is still AFAIK in the role, only from the sidelines.

So in essence, she is still earning a highly lucrative salary, only working less for it.

For all her misdeeds over this pandemic, posting images of herself and her family strolling along without a care in the world after visiting their second home on Twitter for half the world to see, after standing on a pulpit advising the rest of Scotland to stay indoors and follow the rules, is possibly as stupid as it gets.

  43. No Harri, she resigned fully from the job last night .

  44. Fair do’s Colm.

    .

UPDATE II:She’s resigned after the first editions have been printed:

“I am deeply sorry for my actions and the mistakes I have made. The First Minister and I have had a further conversation this evening and we have agreed that the justifiable focus on my behaviour risks becoming a distraction from the hugely important job that government and the medical profession has to do in getting the country through this coronavirus pandemic. Having worked so hard on the government’s response. that is the last thing I want.

The most important thing to me now and over the next few very difficult months is that people across Scotland know what they need to do to reduce the spread of this virus and that means they must have complete trust in those who give them advice. It is with a heavy heart that I resign as Chief Medical Officer.

I will work with my team over the next few days to ensure a smooth transition to my successor.
