DANCE, DANCE WHEREVER YOU MAY BE….

By Patrick Van Roy On July 18th, 2020

Guest Post by Paul

A child falls in love with the pageantry and colour of Irish dancing, begins attending classes, works hard and as a young woman becomes an extremely accomplished Irish dancer. She puts a video of her dancing onto social media, makes an appearance on an Irish radio show to speak about her dancing and live on air receives a call from the lead dancer of Riverdance, the absolute zenith of commercial Irish dancing, to join the troupe for a performance.

The stuff that dreams are made of.

But she isn’t Irish

And she isn’t white.

So, ‘cultural appropriation’ or a young girl following her dreams to their pinnacle?

I think it’s a great story regardless of what a minority of apparent malcontents think.

  4. Great post, mo chara. As the young lady said in the video, there is a difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. She is the best America has to offer IMO.
