No Mask

By Patrick Van Roy On August 3rd, 2020

Holland’s position is based on assessments by the Outbreak Management Team, a group of experts advising the government. It first ruled against masks in May and has re-evaluated the evidence several times, including again last week.

It believes they detract from a clear three-pronged message that has kept deaths from coronavirus down to less than half the rate in Britain: wash hands regularly, maintain social distancing of 1.5 metres and stay at home if suffering any symptoms.

The one exception outside of the medical frontline has been on public transport, where masks are mandatory on the basis it is difficult to stay apart on crowded buses, ferries and trains. ‘We have seen this approach works,’ said Christian Hoebe, a professor of infectious diseases in Maastricht and member of the advisory team. ‘Face masks should not be seen as a magic bullet that halts the spread.

‘The evidence for them is contradictory. In general, we think you must be careful with face masks because they can give a false sense of security. People think they’re immune from disease or stop social distancing. That is very negative.’

  1. I see it’s still cherry picking season.

  2. The Dutch eggheads are right. The evidence for wearing a face nappy is as flimsy as the tissue paper they’re made from.

Sweden has no face mask requirements at all. Not even on public transport. The schools never closed. Its economy is virtually fully open. Infections and deaths are at rock bottoms and there is no sign of a second wave.

Sweden’s approach was the most sustainable. It’s getting on with life as normal while everyone else is hoping for a vaccine.

  3. Sweden at present does not look like a good example at all. They’re even worse that the sad sack leaderless USA. Look at how the mask wearing Asians are doing

Virus death rate per 100,000 population

    Belgium 86.19
    UK 69.61
    Sweden 56.40
    US 47.33
    Japan 0.8
    Korea 0.58
    Singapore 0.48
    NZ 0.45
    Taiwan 0.03

  4. You’re still looking at those BS numbers? Why would anyone do that?

  5. Because Phantom relies on facts while you rely on fiction.

  6. P.S. Who knew Herman Cain was Dutch?

  7. Sweden has no face mask requirements at all. Not even on public transport. The schools never closed. Its economy is virtually fully open. Infections and deaths are at rock bottoms and there is no sign of a second wave.

Pete is absolutely shameless in his misrepresentation of the facts. It genuinely infuriates me when he lies so blatantly.

Let’s compare the mortality (deaths per million population) of Sweden and its neighbours.

    Finland 60
    Norway 47
    Denmark 106
    Estonia 47
    Latvia 17
    Lithuania 29
    Poland 46

    SWEDEN 569

Sweden was the only one of these countries to employ the lax rules so enthusiastically endorsed by Pete. Result: a mortality TEN TIMES worse than its neighbour Norway.

‘Rock bottom’. Don’t insult our ****ing intelligence, Pete.

  8. Sweden could ultimately be proved to have made the right choice.

But its not looking like that today.

  9. Oh No ! Has our Allan been doing the rounds of his local pubs with his “its all a hoax” mantra 🙂

  10. Good catch, Colm. Theres been an uptick in cases up home in County Down as well. I wonder has Jim Corr strayed across the border freeing Ireland from Bill Gates?

  11. we’ve heard alot about carehomes, most being used as a political football
    no suprises there ofc
but this is a great news story of residents fighting back against callous comments made by Johnson a few weeks back

paul i think you’d especially like what they did with the clash album cover 🙂

  12. kurt

That story was all over the news a few weeks ago but I think that article is retrospectively linking it falsely to Johnson’s comments. At the time it was just a good story about a creative project that a care home had engaged in. It wasn’t done as any sort of political reaction. Not everything is about politics.

  13. good find colm

  14. all my finds are good kurt 🙂

  15. masterson –

    You are, unfailingly, an idiot.

I didn’t mention total infections or total deaths. I have misrepresented nothing. I said that Infections and deaths are at rock bottom. This is indisputably true.

We will also discover that Sweden has suffered many fewer of the other deaths associated with lockdowns, because it did not lockdown.

  16. But excess deaths (which will capture lockdown deaths as well as Covid-19 deaths) are much higher in Sweden than in the likes of Denmark.

  17. These are early days.

But as of today, mask wearing Taiwan is looking very good as compared with Sweden

Very few deaths, and their schools and restaurants and offices as far as I know are open.

  18. I think truly international comparisons (such as comparing Taiwan with Sweden) are always going to be relatively meaningless. There are so many factors that can lead to these things, and geopgrahy does play a big part. But comparing Sweden to its nearest neighbours is more telling and Sweden doesn’t look very good in those comparisons.

  19. I don’t know

Taiwan is right next to mainland China, with ( then ) many direct flights to Wuhan etc.

The difference is that Taiwan never believed anything that China said and they went to high alert on Day One which the US, UK and Sweden never did do

The number of Taiwanese who whined about masks would be about zero. They just got on with it. Compare that with the fat dumb and happy Americans or British.

  20. I think having a Vice President who was an epidemiologist helped. They also had a trial run of this with SARS 15 years ago or so.

  21. Absolutely correct

But the Koreans and Japanese also have had very good results

They wear masks when asked to and don’t complain in blogs about it all day long

It’s amazing what you can do if you try to be cooperative

  22. Masterson

‘Rock bottom’. Don’t insult our ****ing intelligence, Pete.

Pete’s nonsense doesn’t fool anyone Masterson.

  23. Masterson and Dave –

You are saying that Sweden’s infection rate is still high and that many Swedes are still dying from the Wuhan Flu.

Please provide evidence for your grossly ignorant opinions.

  24. It’s an insidious pathogen which uses stealth unlike no other in human history. It infects people who, over the full duration of infection, are entirely unaware that they are affected and only become informed of infection from random testing. A dreadful malady and a portent of doom.

I was discussing the Aberdeen breakout today with friends who know the culprit – a French guy who wasn’t feeling at his best but had felt well enough to go to the Soul Bar then on to the Hawthorn. When my friend said that the French dude had visited Soul, we thought “when did he get back”? (Seoul)

Poor buggers – they’re all gonna die of that dreadful illness.

Correction – they’re not going to die and most won’t even notice:

There were a total of 8,891 deaths registered in England and Wales in the week to July 24th, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), 161 fewer than the five-year average of 9,052, PA reports.

This is the sixth week in a row that deaths have been below the five-year average.

Of the deaths registered in the week to July 24th, 217 mentioned COVID-19 on the death certificate – the lowest number of deaths involving COVID-19 since the week ending March 20th, when there was 103 deaths.

  25. You are, unfailingly, an idiot

The problem with that assertion is that while I do not claim to be a genius, I am manifestly not an idiot. Whereas you are routinely mendacious, deliberately selective in your use of facts, and refuse to retract falsehoods when they are exposed. The last time you called me an idiot was the memorable occasion you claimed that A&E was not acute care. You didn’t acknowledge that you were wrong, or apologise. You’re a shameless liar without the balls to admit your mistakes.

  26. Here’s how the public perceive the Covid ‘pandemic’…….

I thought that survey was bad enough, but a different survey by Kekst CNC asking different questions revealed a simply astonishing figure: Americans over-estimated the TOTAL number of compatriots who have died from COVID-19 by 200-fold! When asked the question (in mid-July), “How many people in your country have died from the Coronavirus?”, Americans responded “9%,” which would be roughly 30,000,000 people, versus the actual number of 151,000. No wonder people are panicked (and wildly, wildly misinformed.)

These people vote, and the result is our current reality. This isn’t even about people not being exposed to the facts about the coronavirus hoax: this is about people embracing the hysteria without any form of resistance.

Really, try imagining what it must be like to be one of these people that think that one in ten Americans has died from the virus.

Here are numbers for the British public:

Perception vs reality – the impact of Covid-19
People think coronavirus is much more prevalent than it is – and that many more have died than in reality. Respondents across all countries were asked to enter a % for each category. The mean percentage is shown for each. Comparisons are shown on confirmed cases/deaths or, in the case of the UK, best modelled estimates of total COVID cases.

How many people in your country have died from coronavirus? Ans – 7% 100x confirmed deaths (PHE)

Britons believe that the number of deaths from Corona-hoax is 100 TIMES!!!! more than actual. Bring on Gates’s ‘vaccine’ because, quite frankly, I’m sick of these idiots

  27. while I do not claim to be a genius, I am manifestly not an idiot

    That’s because you are a shameless liar. Let’s have a look……

  28. Oh stop

    Be nice

  29. Masterson –

No really, you are an idiot. This thread demonstrates that you are not just a mendacious liar (we always knew that), but that you cannot understand basic English.

Come back when you are no longer a mendacious liar and an idiot.

  30. wouldn’t a liar always be mendacious?

  31. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) has been publicly called out by his daughter for ignoring medical expertise and refusing to wear a face mask before he tested positive for the coronavirus last week, according to multiple media outlets.

“Wearing a mask is a non-partisan issue. The advice of medical experts shouldn’t be politicized,” wrote Caroline Gohmert, a singer who performs as BELLSAINT, in posts shared on social media Friday that were verified to CNN by her agent.

“My father ignored medical expertise and now he has COVID,” the musician continued. “This has been a heartbreaking battle bc I love my dad and don’t want him to die.”

She concluded with a plea and a dig at President Donald Trump, who has faced widespread criticism for his administration’s catastrophic handling of the public health crisis that’s killed more than 150,000 people in the U.S.

“Please please listen to medical experts,” Caroline Gohmert wrote. “It’s not worth following a president who has no remorse for leading his followers to an early grave.”

    Huffington Post

    Oh my my

  32. No I understood your point perfectly, Pete. Your argument implies that how many people died *yesterday* is less important than how many people died *in total*. Which is, not to put too fine a point on it, cretinous. Since you are plainly not stupid, you are simply being dishonest.

Still waiting for that apology, Pete. Or any acknowledgement that you called me an idiot for being 100% correct.

  33. 1) Swedish cases are not “rock bottom”: https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus/country/sweden?country=SWE~GBR~NOR~DNK~FIN

    2) It’s daft to look at the current level of cases and deaths. Not long ago there were no cases and no deaths at all in this country. There then ensued 100s of thousands of cases and tens of thousands of deaths. That can happen again. The virus has no memory and doesn’t care what you did yesterday.

  34. Pete Moore,

    Masterson and Dave –

You are saying that Sweden’s infection rate is still high and that many Swedes are still dying from the Wuhan Flu.

Please provide evidence for your grossly ignorant opinions.

No I never said anything of the sort perhaps you need to concentrate more on your reading. What I said was:

Pete’s nonsense doesn’t fool anyone Masterson.

And your nonsense is ignoring the fact that Sweden has got a pretty bad deaths per million from coronavirus figure. As other people have already pointed out.

Perhaps you should do some more reading yourself.

  35. Jim Acosta @Acosta
A source familiar with Trump’s Tuesday Oval Office meeting with his coronavirus task force said the president is still not demonstrating that he has a firm grasp of the severity of the pandemic in the US.

“He still doesn’t get it,” the source said. “He does not get it.”

    unfriggin believable !

As some members of the task force tried to stress the dire nature of the situation to the president during the meeting, the source said Trump repeatedly attempted to change the subject.

“He starts talking about something else,” the source said.

  36. He thinks that he and the US are doing a helluva job, Brownie

  37. covid deaths NY…… 32,725

  38. We learned hard lessons. We asked you to learn from our experience and you laughed.

You never learned the name of the virus, and you strongly supported the premature openings in certain states that threw those states into the furnace, and which caused extended economic harm to the country

Florida and Texas did it your way. And look what happened.

In NYC the past three days – zero deaths from your ” chicom flu ”

Data collected by the COVID Tracking Project shows there have been over 1,000 deaths per day most days since July 21, when 1,038 fatalities were reported nationwide. The toll of 1,447 deaths on July 29 was the highest number since mid-May. Deaths have been steadily increasing since the end of June.

As of Wednesday, a total of more than 157,400 people in the U.S. have died due to the coronavirus, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University. That’s nearly a quarter of the 702,330 deaths reported worldwide.

  39. Frank –

“Swedish cases are not “rock bottom””

Just as well I said “at rock bottom” and not “rock bottom”. There’s a subtle difference. I was talking about cases today and not cumulatively. We learned today that, predictably, the Swedish economy was hit less hard than other economies through Q2.

  40. It’s a virus….. the Chicom Flu.

Ny State and NYC did the worst handling of the Chicom Flu. More than 4x the deaths than anywhere else and the most deaths of seniors.

Make all the excuses, and spin all you want. Complain and bitch all you want. You echo the propaganda spouted to you that lead to the worst incident of viral deaths in any area of the US in 100 years.

You are not of sound mind, you insist that what you say works while the area you live in and followed these rules is waist deep in bodies worse than anywhere else in the country that you can point to.

    but but but……

  41. Poor ” no mask ” Pat

    Perfect summation .
