IT’S KICKING OFF IN BEIRUT

By Pete Moore On August 8th, 2020

Lebanon is an unstable country with a corrupt power elite, a collapsed economy, lots of weapons and competing factions. This has the potential to go really bad very quickly.

  1. Throwing stuff at the Police solves so much.
Waiting for someone to blame those pesky Jews.

  2. Most likely not. The protests are targeting the government. The Lebanese government and their allies got 54% of the vote in the 2018 elections. However in Beirut they got 36% of the vote. That government includes Hezbollah, so I doubt Israel is the target of the protests. What is slightly worrying is that so far there have been three government ministries attacked. The Foreign Ministry, the Economy Ministry, and the Enviornment Ministry. It is possible that all three were attacked because they are located close to the protests. But all three happen to have Christian Ministers (Raul Nehme is Greek Catholic, and Damianos Kattar and Charbel Wehbe are both Maronites).
