Ahh just to Ramble

By Patrick Van Roy On September 7th, 2020

“The Flame that burns twice as bright only last’s half as long…..” but just because the flame no longer burns doesn’t mean the fire ain’t still smoldering.

One is gone, one is broken, and one just retired.  We were the 3 Princes of the city, 3 sons set to follow our fathers footsteps and exceed them. It didn’t work that way for one of us the way it was supposed to, but I found happiness, one I miss, and the other after 35yrs of Service Retired. Saturday was the Formal event, a sea of Blue and their families filled the Bellevue, it was wonderful.  So I play this for him at the end of an Era.

As we ate and drank the conversation was consumed with the idiocy of what is going on in our streets and the lack of political will to bring it to an end. The frustration and anger was palpable. The streets are dangerous to begin with add to that a Mayor, DA, and City Council that refuse to allow it to end and you have a powder keg just waiting to blow. There’s an old joke “cops don’t buy foreign cars, and they don’t vote Democrat” Philly was an acception to this rule for a long time because Frank Rizzo was a Democrat, but Frank’s dead and so is any support for any Democrat among this elite fraternity.

Now How are YOU

Since one of us has gone MIA, and since he was doing these Posts I will “Fill In” while we await news of our missing Mahons…..

Everyone in my immediate family is well. My wife has been working everyday during the Lockdown, my one daughter in Ga/Tenn is back to work, but at a new Job since her old one laid everyone off and no longer has Fulltime Positions exept for upper management. My other Daughter is filling my livingroom with books and computers as she does Zoom Classes, and me I’m me…. nothing for me has changed at all during this. I’ve actually been busier the last 8 months.

Please Check in, let us know how you are doing and is your life getting easier or more complicated.

  1. I read this a couple of times, and I was surprised nobody commented.
I’m sorry for the loss of one, sympathise with the unfulfilled dreams of another, and celebrate the end of one road for a third, and hope a brand new, previously undiscovered trail lies before him. Perhaps he could use a ‘broken’ companion on at least part of that trail?

As to the check-in: I’m glad to hear all at Chez Troll are doing well. Here at Séimí Hall, we are building an east wing – we’re building a shed/workshop, which we are spending a ludicrous amount of money on, and will probably move into afterwards! It is here that I shall create artistic wonders, craft fantastic objets d’art, and basically escape from the family!
The chile is back in school, though for how long remains to be seen. Herself never stopped working, and I have started going in to the studio twice a week, but again that could change again very soon.
Other than that, all is good. We’re still buzzing from the recent meeting with Charles, but we probably won’t venture back in to town again for a while.
All in all, all is satisfactory in Seimiland, and long may it continue.
Oh, and I’m also trying to quit the smokes again – wish me luck!

  2. Happy days! They cancelled our flight to London, so we get two more days in wonderful Ireland. Not only that, but I got my nonstop flight back to Dallas returned to us. I had to call Dallas to reschedule our hotel and spoke to a lady with a strong Texas accent. It was music to my ears, so I must be missing home. We’ll be saying “slan” to Ireland Saturday with heavy but happy hearts.

  3. Charles

Use the time wisely, and see if there are any tours up to Newgrange!
I’m glad you got an extra couple of days 🙂
Happy to meet, sorry to part 🙂

  4. At least you can say you met some good republicans in Eire 🤣🤣🤣
And hopefully avoided some of phantoms unpleasant neo nazi polish bum chums . 😱

  5. They are not my chums

I know little about them, other than that you guys think it’s fun to beat them up.

  6. Lies is all you have left you’re busted pal

  7. They are not my chums

I know little about them, other than that you guys think it’s fun to beat them up.

Nobody thinks it’s fun to beat anyone up, so stop with the lies.

    You still support them though.

  8. Seimi, you read my mind! Newgrange is only 35 km from the hotel. Just a train ride to Drogheda and a short taxi ride is all. The Missus will be excited when I tell her.

  9. All is well with me. Back to work three days a week, working from home the other two. Life is Ok. My brother his partner and daughter were ill with suspected Covid recently but only mildly so – their tests came back negative after the neighbours had a positive test but all were ill in the same way so go figure. I am used to the new normal but regretting the ending of summer, but the seasons change and life goes on, stay safe and well everyone. Hope Mahons rejoins us soon.

  10. Colm, do you know anyone who had Covid? I don’t know anybody (but, then again, I go out so rarely 🙁

Some new reports are suggesting long-term damage to the heart and brain, including in children. Worrying.

  12. My cousin tested positive for Covid only yesterday. He also has ongoing, underlying health issues, so it’s a worry.
One person I knew died directly because of Covid, back near the start of the lockdown.

  13. Noel

I am aware of one person in my workplace who died of COVID, the father of another colleague who died with it, and a neighbour of another colleague who died of COVID – that person was an entirely fit and healthy 52 year old. Apart from theunproven case of my brother and his family am not aware of any others in my personal vicinity.

  14. Well I’ve had covid guys and you all know me.
Even if it’s just through these pages.

  15. //Well I’ve had covid guys and you all know me.//

Dave, have you noticed any longer-term effects like unusual headaches?

    Is there anyone monitoring you?

At any rate, I’m sure we all wish you a full recovery.

  16. …I’m sure we all wish you a full recovery.

Comments on articles here are unmoderated, and do not necessarily reflect the views of A Tangled Web or David Vance

    I kid, I kid 🙂

  17. Seimi, Is that the cousin that lives in your parents house?

  18. Next door, Charles. The guy with the bar in his back garden 🙂

In fact, I think I mentioned at the time, as we were out the back, that I would have taken you in to see the bar, but he had just been tested for Covid?

  19. I hope you have made a full recovery Dave with no lasting side effects, and I also hope (yes even you kurt 🙂 ) that everyone else here remains Covid free – whether you wear a damned mask or not !!

  20. Seimi, Ah, that’s right’s right, I remember now.

  21. Thank you for your comments Seimi.

I too was surprised no one else decided to check in.

  22. Noel,

Dave, have you noticed any longer-term effects like unusual headaches?

    Is there anyone monitoring you?

I was worried because when I contracted covid, it gave me a severe sore throat, and I thought it might be my tonsil cancer returning. Also, because of covid, they stopped physically checking my throat which they were doing every 3 months, which was very concerning.
I don’t seem to have any long term problems from covid, but my brother who was in hospital with it still has some minor heath issues.

At any rate, I’m sure we all wish you a full recovery.

    Thanks mate.

  23. Seimi.

    I kid, I kid

What was it my grandmother used to say, ‘many a true word said in jest’.

  24. I have thankfully so far never had even a cancer scare but I imagine anyone who has ever had a cancer diagnosis , even if fully cured must inevitably have that fear of it returning always at the back of their mind. Lets hope any lingering fears you have remain as just fears – and you remain cancer free at least for the next 5 or 6 decades !

  25. Colm.

Thanks very much mate. I really appreciate that.
I wish everybody on ATW the best of health as well.
Enjoy yourselves while you’re here, you don’t know how long it’s going to last. 😁

  26. Dave have they reinstated the follow up on your cancer? If so go right away.

I know 2 people that cancer treatments were stopped because of covid. 1 passed the other is not doing good.

  27. Patrick.

The last cancer check-up I had was at Christmas, and I’m supposed to have them every 3-months would because of covid they were cancelled. They did give me three monthly telephone consultations, but that’s not really a substitute.
I’ve been hassling the NHS for months to check up on me and I eventually managed to get an appointment a couple of weeks ago for a camera up my nose and down my throat.
It’s really difficult to get these appointments, and I feel sorry for people in worse situations such as the people you know.
I’m a big supporter of the NHS, but I’m not a hypocrite and I have to criticise the treatment of seriously ill people during the covid pandemic. We’re sitting on a huge cancer time bomb because of delayed treatments and consultations. As well as delays and cancellations for essential consultations, treatments and operations relating to other conditions.
I appreciate things have to change because of Covid, but almost shutting down hospitals and doctors surgeries is a step too far.

  28. Just because we argue Dave doesn’t mean I don’t care.

Please continue to keep a check on your cancer. My prayers are with you.

  29. The last cancer check-up I had was at Christmas

    Not OK.

    Not close to OK.

Here, I think that the ” normal ” patient backlog for medical and even dental work has been clearing.

But, early on, some patients didn’t want to go near a hospital due to concern of catching the virus.

I went to the dentist yesterday, and it was interesting having the hygienist wearing a face shield. Apart from that, all was normal. Dentists have long worked under the assumption that any patient may have an infectious disease.

  30. Patrick Van Roy,
//Just because we argue Dave doesn’t mean I don’t care.

Please continue to keep a check on your cancer. My prayers are with you.//

    Thanks Patrick I appreciate that.
just to point out, I don’t hate or even dislike anybody who posts here on ATW.
    I certainly don’t think you’re a bad person Patrick.

  31. There are no bad people on ATW just fifty shades of good people…. Me being at the purest end of good of course 🙂

  32. My cousin tested positive for Covid only yesterday. He also has ongoing, underlying health issues, so it’s a worry.

The artist formerly known as Fester or his older brother?

One person I knew died directly because of Covid, back near the start of the lockdown

The only one I can think of was Fra McG but I don’t think that was Covid?

Charles, if you found Glendalough moving Newgrange will overwhelm.

Dave, please get yourself checked asap, mucker, I implore you. I watched cancer take my mother over three short months.

I can only think of one person from ATW that I would potentially be weary of having a pint with and even then it would only be a maybe.

  33. Paul

    It’s TAFKAF 😂

The person who died wouldn’t be known to you, I don’t think. He was an Iraqi immigrant, affectionately known in Casement social club as Jihadi Paddy 😊 a good guy

  34. I can only think of one person from ATW that I would potentially be weary of having a pint with and even then it would only be a maybe.

I bet you are not gonna tell us are you ? . Instead you’ll have us all stewing, having agonising sleepless nights sobbing bitterly to ourselves “is it me? Is it me, that Paul won’t sip a pint with ? 🙂

  35. There are no bad people on ATW just fifty shades of good people….

    I’d agree with that

( The very good internet long form interviewer ) Joe Rogan was talking about that the other day. How politics and internet/blogs cause sharp and unnecessary divisions among people who would otherwise get along quite well

  36. I’ll tell you if you wish to know, it’s the crazy fella from Crazytown.

The question however shouldn’t be who on ATW I would drink with but rather who on ATW would drink with me? 🙂

  37. I’ll tell you if you wish to know, it’s the crazy fella from Crazytown.

Yeah, that narrows it down 🙂

The question however shouldn’t be who on ATW I would drink with but rather who on ATW would drink with me?

PS – If the drinks are on you , we’re all in !!

  38. I’d drink with ya Paul.

  39. Cheers, Pat!!

  40. So that’s two drinking buddies Paul has so far 😉
